Soprano Virginia MacWatters was known not only for her impressive operatic career during which she performed in opera houses throughout the United States, Europe, and South America, but also for her dedication to teaching. In 1957 she joined the voice faculty of the Indiana University School of Music where she remained until her retirement in 1982. She was awarded the prestigious Frederic Bachman Lieber Memorial Award for excellence in teaching in 1979. The collection consists of biographical materials, clippings, programs, teaching files, correspondence, photographs, and scrapbooks.

This project consists of interviews with Russian and Tatarian mothers of three different generations, those born before 1912, those born between 1912 and 1930, and those born after 1930. The interviewees talk about the change in norms and acceptance regarding motherhood due to wars and government changes. Topics discussed include motherhood, reproduction, infant and child mortality, courtship and marriage, fertility and abortion, prenatal care, maternity homes, maternity leave, and pediatric services. These interviews show how traditional practices blended with modern medical practices and ideas over the last one hundred years These interviews were used by David Ransel in his book Village Mothers "2000." The interviews have been transcribed in Russian with some English notes.

On July 15, 1942 Indiana University welcomed 200 Navy yeomen to campus to participate in the Naval Training School. In October of 1942 WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) arrived on campus for navy storekeepers training. By May 1944 the Naval Training School had trained 5008 Navy yeomen and storekeepers. The school would be closed one month later. This collection consists of manuals, syllabi, student information, naval school publications, administrative materials, and the correspondences of the education director of the Navy training school Elvin S. Eyster and Robert T. Ittner, assistant to President Herman B Wells.

United States Foreign Relations During World War II, 1975-1978

This collection of interviews primarily covers U.S. foreign relations with Great Britain during World War II. While other countries, specifically the Soviet Union, are mentioned, most of the interviewees were in some way connected to Britain. Major topics include the openness in sharing information between the U.S. and Britain, Lend-Lease, and a discussion of various diplomats. Most interviewees complete their post-war history with a description of their duties in the locations they were later reassigned.

Ulysses Howe Smith papers, 1901-1912

Ulysses Howe Smith was an Indiana University alumnus and administrator. Smith held several positions at IU, but the most prominent was his tenure as Bursar, 1908-1936. His papers comprise .2 cubic feet and spans 1901-1912. The Correspondence series is the more prominent of the two series and spans 1901-12. Family members make up a good number of the correspondents, with Smith's brother Paul being the most frequent correspondent in the collection. Discussion primarily focuses on joint business matters. The Subject files series holds only 2 folders - one folder on accounting classes Smith taught at IU and the other his Notary Public certificate.

Throughout his teaching career, he taught courses in many disciplines, including history, sociology, and economics. This collection consists entirely of his Social Progress manuscript, which includes not only his typescripts but also his handwritten drafts and notes.

Ukrainian Americans in the Midwest, 1990-1991

This project examines the lives of Ukrainian American immigrants. Two of the interviews are conducted in Ukrainian. The time periods covered are the 1930s-1990s. The interviewees discuss immigration, traditions, religion and Ukrainian American community organizations. Some of major topics are the United States culture, Ukrainian American youth organizations, Ukrainian religious ceremonies in the United States, and Ukrainian language and culture instruction. Ukrainian wedding and holiday traditions are also discussed.

In the Tuba-Euphonium Oral History Project, seven tuba musicians were interviewed about their early training and subsequent careers in the music industry. Each man--Robert Rusk, Jerry Lackey, L.B. Oliver, Ivan F. Hammond, Kenneth Schubert, Samuel Gnagey, and Paul Krzywicki discussed instrument design and different methods of teaching about and playing the tuba. All five of these men studied at Indiana University and went on to play in other venues. They talk about their experiences with William J. "Bill" Bell at Indiana University as well as Bell's methods of teaching at the school.

Toyoaki Uehara (1924-1997) was a professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University Bloomington from 1963-1990. This collection documents Uehara's scholarly career and personal life, including his participation on university and departmental committees, research and publications related to Japanese language, literature, and mythology; development of international exchange programs; and his involvement in the Tenrikyo movement. Types of material include departmental documents, minutes and memos, program enrollment figures, research and grant proposals, and business correspondence. Also included are copies of Uehara's dissertation, publications and research materials, lectures, bibliographies, extensive personal correspondence, and paper and audiovisual Japanese language study and instruction materials.
