Collections

Lockridge mss. III, circa 1837-2000, consists of the correspondence, unpublished manuscripts, photos, papers, and audio tapes pertaining to the life and work of author Ross Lockridge, Jr., 1914-1948, and the Lockridge family.

Materials collected from the composition studio of Leonard Bernstein, a conductor, composer, and musician active during the mid-20th century. The collection includes recordings, books, scores, awards, artwork, clothing, furniture, and other artifacts pertaining to his professional and personal life.

The Cookery mss., circa 1660–circa 1918, consists of bound and individual writings, often on the topic of cookery, of persons involved with cooking by practice or trade.

The McFarland, Demas Lindley mss., ca. 1812-1849, consist of correspondence concerning the experiences and conduct of Demas Lindley McFarland during the War of 1812, as well as with the Jacksonian controversy over the Second Bank of the United States.

The Wensinger, Arthur S. mss., 1798-2007, consists of the papers of translator and academic Arthur S. Wensinger, 1926- .

Consists of individual items acquired separately either as a gift or purchased from a variety of sources, relating to or by French literary figures. Additions continue to be made.

The Lindenbaum, Peter mss., ca. 1590-2008, consist of the papers of Dr. Peter Lindenbaum (1938-2010), a former English Professor at Indiana University.

The collection consists of a group of 28 hornbooks. Also included are two auction catalogs for sales where some of the hornbooks were sold and a description of a hornbook in brass from dealer Patrick King's list no. 11, 1986.

The Gottfried mss. consists of Latin manuscripts and a working translation of Giovanni Della Casa's Rime by Rudolf B. Gottfried, 1909-1986, professor emeritus of English, Indiana University.

The Allen mss., 800-1972, consists of manuscript pieces collected by William Edward David Allen, 1901-1973, foreign service officer, businessman, and author, and his own writings about Georgian history.

The Pliny mss., 9th cent.-1938, are photostats of Pliny manuscripts assembled by Selatie Edgar Stout, 1871-1969, professor of Latin and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Indiana University.

The Ricketts mss., 9th-19th cent., are illuminated medieval and renaissance manuscripts assembled by Coella Lindsay Ricketts, 1859-1941, calligrapher, of Chicago, Illinois. Most of the material relates to religious matters.

The Near Eastern mss., 700-1915, consist of a collection of individually acquired manuscripts pertaining to the region formerly known as the Near East, now referred to as the Middle East.

The History of the Written Word: Pages from the Past, 2400 BCE-1920 CE, consist of a collection of original leaves from rare books and manuscripts in limited portfolio sets.

The Miscellaneous mss., 2100 BCE-1970, consist of individual items acquired individually either as a gift or purchased from a variety of sources.

The Adomeit mss., 2000 BCE - 1995 CE, consists of miniature manuscripts collected by Ruth Elizabeth Adomeit, 1910-1996.

The Starr mss., 19th century, are holograph copies and originals of vocal and instrumental music and one letter collected by Saul Starr, 1907-1964, physician of Eastchester, New York.

The Indiana University School of Medicine emerged from a number of private, proprietary medical schools that existed in Indianapolis in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. The most important of these private medical schools were the Medical College of Indiana and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, both of which operated in Indianapolis. In the first decade of the twentieth century efforts began to try to merge these private schools under the state universities then in Indiana, Purdue University and Indiana University. The merger of several medical schools under Purdue University was short-lived. In 1903 Indiana University established first year (classroom) medical studies at Bloomington, and in 1907 merged with the Medical College of Indiana and the remnant of the Purdue medical school to establish clinical instruction in Indianapolis. In subsequent years the School of Medicine was housed in Indianapolis on a large campus with several hospitals, clinical, and research facilities. First year medical studies were moved to Indianapolis by the 1950s.

The Woodburn family first settled in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1830, having relocated from Chester County, South Carolina. This collection consists of personal correspondence and other material of family members of James Albert Woodburn (1856-1943), a professor of history at Indiana University (1890-1924), including his father James Woodburn, wife Caroline Gelston Woodburn, brothers Walter E. and Theophilus Wylie Woodburn, son James Gelston Woodburn, and granddaughter Janet Wiecking. Collection materials date from 1848-1978 and notably include Caroline Gelston Woodburn's letters describing her experiences as a new member of the Bloomington and Indiana University communities in the early 1890s, and a photocopy of James Gelston Woodburn's diary ("My Trip Abroad"), which documents his trip to Europe in 1911-1912.

The Burnham mss., 1848-1977, consist of the papers of Indiana University administrator, Walter Erastus Burnham, 1905-1980, and of his parents, grandparents and other family members.

The Whitehouse, F. mss, 1848-1938, consist of architectural renderings, photographs, scratch board sketches, and pen & ink sketches of works produced by noted Chicago architect, Francis M. Whitehouse.

The Wordsworth mss. II, 1848-1909, consist of letters and papers of the family of William Wordsworth, 1770-1850, and their friends. They are concerned chiefly with family matters, financial accounts, and the welfare of Dora Wordsworth, 1858-1934, his granddaughter, after the death of her mother.

The Harris mss., 1848-1851, consists of letters to Jonathan Newton Harris, 1815-1896, merchant and banker.

The Drake mss., 1848-1849, consists of the letters of physician Daniel Drake, 1785-1852, to his children, copied by U.S. senator Charles Daniel Drake, 1811-1892.

The Signers of the Declaration of Independence mss., 1848, consists of materials pertaining to the members of the Continental Congress who drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence.

The Wallace mss. II, 1847-1938, consists of the literary papers of Lew Wallace, 1827-1905, lawyer, soldier, diplomat, and author.

The Janney mss., 1847-1900, consists of the papers of John Jay Janney, 1812-1907, a member of the Society of Friends, educator, Ohio politician, and railroad official.

William Wylie Blair entered Indiana University in 1845. He attended through the 1848 school year, but did not graduate. This small collection consists of six essays written by Blair while he was a student at IU as well as an 1848 letter written to Blair and friend Jonathan Dixon Wylie by former classmate James Strean, who was an IU student at the time of writing.

The Batterton, Davies mss., 1847-1848, consists of materials related to Indiana University alumnus Davies Batterton, 1823-1860.

The Appleton-Century mss., 1846-1962, consists of the office files of the publishing company, its two predecessors, D. Appleton & Co., and the Century Co., and to a small extent its successor, Appleton-Century Crofts, Inc.

The Johnson, W. S. mss., 1846-1894, consists of letters to printer William Spencer Johnson, 1813-1897, from actors, actresses, artists, musicians, editors, authors, journalists, and statesmen. Included are also some photographs of actors and actresses.

The Whitman mss., 1846-1878, consist of correspondence of Mrs. Sarah Helen (Power) Whitman, 1803-1878.

The Browning mss., ca. 1846-1878, consist primarily of letters from poets Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1806-1861, and Robert Browning, 1812-1889, to Sarianna Browning, 1814-1903, Robert Browning's sister.

The Leavitt mss., 1846-1849, consist of six letters from George C. Leavitt, 1824-1854, teacher and surveyor, to his parents in New Hampshire, and one letter from his wife Elizabeth to his parents.

The Magee mss., 1845-1929, consists of the papers of Rufus Magee, 1845-1929, lawyer, Indiana state senator, and diplomat.

The Dixon mss., 1845-1876, consists of letters to William Hepworth Dixon, 1821-1879, historian, traveler, and editor of the Athenaeum from January 1853 to August 1869.

The Peters mss., 1844-1967, consist of letters and manuscripts by and about John Addington Symonds, 1840-1893, author, collected by Robert Louis Peters, 1924-2014 of Huntington Beach, California.

The McWhirter, F.T. mss., 1844-1915, consist of letters and papers of Felix Tyree McWhirter, 1853-1915, banker of Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Woodward mss., 1844-1905, consist of the correspondence of John Trotter Woodward, 1819-1877, physician of Buena Vista, Monroe County, Indiana, with his family and friends, accompanied by related family materials.

The Graham mss., 1844-1874, consists of the papers of Robertson Graham, 1795-1885, farmer and frontiersman of Monroe County, Indiana.

The Hembree mss., 1844-1862, consist of the papers of Absolom Jefferson Hembree, 1813-1856, Oregon legislator, farmer, and soldier.

The Gregg mss., 1844-1848, consists of letters of Josiah Gregg, 1806-1850, Santa Fe trader and author, to John Bigelow, 1817-1911, editor, diplomat, and author.

This collection consists of the family papers of Indiana University professor Cecilia Hennel Hendricks spanning the period from 1839 through 1970. Included are papers relating to the academic careers of Cecilia, Associate Professor of English, and her sister Cora, Professor of Mathematics at Indiana University, as well as manuscripts and writings by both women. Also found in the collection are papers and correspondence of family members: father Joseph B. Hennel, mother Anna M. Thuman Hennel, Cecilia's husband John Hendricks, and sister Edith Hennel Ellis.

The Harding mss., 1843-1930, consists of the papers of Stephen Selwyn Harding, 1808-1891, lawyer, governor of Utah Territory, and chief justice of Colorado Territory.

The Champney sketches mss. consists of drawings of the post-Civil War South by painter and illustrator James Wells Champney, 1843-1903, made for articles written by Edward Smith King, 1848-1896, author and journalist.

The Bement mss., 1843-1891, consists of the correspondence of Isaac Bush, 1815-1864, farmer of LaPorte County, Indiana, and his wife, Sarah Ann (Bement) Bush, 1821-1891.

The Blair mss., 1843-1881, consists of letters and papers of Montgomery Blair, 1813-1883, lawyer and postmaster general in the cabinet of President Abraham Lincoln, 1809-1865.

The Ellsworth mss., 1843-1874, consists of the papers of Stukely Ellsworth, -1876, lawyer.

The Atocha mss., 1843-1855, consists of letters sent to businessman Alexander J. Atocha, 1804-1870, during the Mexican-American War.

This collection consists of the family papers of Indiana University alumni John and Hilda Jay. The collection primarily consists of correspondence between John, Hilda, and family or friends largely spanning 1939-2002; personal files containing educational materials, a journal, and a scrapbook; as well as several home movies from circa 1939-1946.

The Hains mss., 1842-1851, consists of 11 letters written by Samuel P. Hains, 1810-1889, concerning his experiences in Indiana.

The Rumely, F.S. mss. II, 1841-1955, are largely the personal and business papers of Fanny (Scott) Rumely, 1877- 1979, of LaPorte, Indiana.

The Tennyson mss., 1841-1954, consist chiefly of correspondence of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1809-1892, poet, and his family.

The Hovey mss., 1841-1927, consist of letters and papers of Alvin Peterson Hovey, 1821-1891, governor of Indiana, and correspondence of his daughter, Mrs. Esther (Hovey) Menzies, and Mrs. Deidre Dorothy (Duff) Johnson.

The Tennyson, F. mss., 1841-1922, are the papers of Frederick Tennyson, 1807-1898, poet, and his family.

The Huntington mss., 1841-1862, consist of the family correspondence of Elisha Mills Huntington, 1806-1862, Indiana lawyer and judge.

The Carroll L. Lurding Library of College Fraternity and Sorority Materials mss., ca 1840-2014, consist of books, pamphlets, histories, yearbooks, and other bound volumes detailing the history of fraternities, sororities, colleges, and universities from all 50 states and the District of Columbia in the United States as well as some colleges in Canada.

The Ames mss., 1840-1983 consist of the papers, correspondence, photographs, memorabilia and collected items of the Sally Mundy, 1886-1963, her son Richard Ames 1905-1984, and her second husband, author Talbot Mundy 1879-1940.

The Haldeman, Mrs. S. A., mss., 1839-1953, consists mainly of personal correspondence and papers of banker Sarah Alice (Addams) Haldeman, 1853-1915.

The Neely mss., 1839-1924, consist primarily of letters written to Sarah Ann (Prosser) Neely, 1846-1896, during the Civil War.

The Rumely mss., 1838-1965, are the papers of Edward Aloysius Rumely, 1882-1964, physician, educator, and public relations man, and papers relating to his ancestors. The papers consist of correspondence with prominent people both in Europe and the United States; an autobiography; documents dealing with his arrest for perjury in July, 1918, and the pardon by President Calvin Coolidge on January 19, 1925; material on his many fields of interest; pictures, and printed matter.

The Archer mss., 1838-1940, consists of notes on lectures and papers written by Calvin Beza Kell Archer, 1822-1947, while he was a student at Princeton Seminary (now Hanover College) and Indiana University, 1838-1844.

The Tuttle mss., 1838-1912, are papers of Elizabeth A. Tuttle, 1823?-1896, nurse and teacher of Colebrook, Ohio, and of Ira Norris Noland, 1844?- , physician, who married Hattie Tuttle, niece of Elizabeth A. Tuttle.

The Bartholomew mss., 1838-1886, consists of the papers of American businessman, pioneer, and judicial officer Jacob Bartholomew, 1818-1863, and his wife, Emily Ebersole Bartholomew, 1825-1913.

The Monroe County Historical Society mss., 1837-1955, consist of documents, correspondence, and articles relating to Monroe County and the Monroe County Historical Society.

William Tinsley was an architect from Dublin, Ireland; he is well-known in his profession for designing part of the original Indiana University Bloomington campus. This collection consists of a journal written by William Tinsley and two of his children, Charles and Harvey.

The Funk mss., 1837-1916, consist of letters and papers of Joseph Potts Funk, 1837-1904, educator.

The Thompson mss., 1837-1899, are letters and papers of Richard Wigginton Thompson, 1809-1900, lawyer, judge, Indiana state legislator, U.S. congressman, U.S. secretary of navy.

The Binford mss., 1837-1871, consists of three ledgers and miscellaneous papers of a Crawfordsville, Indiana, general store operated by William Binford, 1801-1848, and Samuel Binford, 1809-1890.

The Jansen, Peter K. mss., 1836–2005, consists primarily of manuscripts, drafts, correspondence and other material relating to translations into English from the German made by Peter K. Jansen (1934–2007) over the course of his career.

The Holman, W.S. mss., 1836-1998, consist of correspondence and other papers of William Steele Holman, member of the Indiana State House of Representatives and the United States House of Representatives.

The Wharton mss., 1836-1975 (bulk 1900-1937), consists of the correspondence, diaries, and writings of novelist Edith Newbold Jones Wharton, 1862-1937.

The Champ mss., 1836-1931, consists of the papers of Indiana physician, businessman, and postmaster George W. Champ, 1830-1905.

The Philomathean Society was one of two major literary societies on campus. It was founded in 1831 and was last listed in the university catalogue in 1893. This collection primarily consists of programs for the group's annual Spring Exhibition with a fairly complete run between 1844 and 1886. Also included in the collection is a series of published speeches and one partial constitution.

The Banta mss., 1836-1888, consists of the papers of James P. Banta, 1814-1873, Civil War soldier of Salem, Indiana, and his wife, Jane P. Lewelling, 1812-.

The Kirkman mss., 1836-1875, consists of the papers of Joseph J. Kirkman, 1809-1879, a farmer, businessman, and sheriff of Gibson County, Indiana.

General meetings of the Indiana University faculty began in 1835, to discuss the industriousness of its students, calling student rolls, and hearing reports on the work and standing of each of the students. Disciplinary measures, dismissals, and exams for students were also discussed during many of the meetings throughout the nineteenth century. By the 1920s, the faculty had grown to such a point that it was necessary to create a representative body of the faculty, but the faculty as a whole continued to meet with some regularity. Today the faculty body rarely meet, but may be convened by the IU president, the Secretary of the University Faculty Council, or on petition signed by voting faculty members numbering no less than 5% of all voting faculty members.

The Butler mss., 1835-1937, includes papers, 1877-1937, of Amos William Butler, 1860-1937, zoologist, anthropologist, and sociologist, and a few papers, 1835-1871, of his father, William Wallace Butler, 1810-1903, merchant and farmer.

William Daily was a Methodist minister, and served as president of Indiana University, 1853-1859. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, financial records, administrative records relating to his presidency at Indiana University; most prominent are records relating to charges brought against Daily during his presidency.

The Lane, J. mss., 1835-1906, consist of correspondence and papers of Joseph Lane, 1801-1881, first territorial governor of Oregon.

The Crull mss., 1835-1904, consists of letters and documents relating to the Crull family of Hamilton County, Indiana.

The Cumback mss., 1835-1904, consists of the correspondence of Indiana congressman Will Cumback, 1829-1905.

The Palmer mss., 1835-1888, consists of the correspondence and papers of Joel Palmer, 1810-1881, superintendent of Indian Affairs in Oregon Territory, 1853-1857, and of his brother, Ephraim Palmer, captain of Company B, 1st regiment, Oregon Infantry.

Jacob Ammen (1806-1894) was a professor and military officer for the Union army during the American Civil War. After graduating from West Point and serving in the military, he taught at various institutions of higher education, including Indiana University, where he served as professor and chair of the Mathematics Department from 1840 to 1843. Following his teaching career, he returned to military service after the outbreak of the Civil War, attaining to the rank of Brigadier General. This collection consists of correspondences, personal writings, and military artifacts kept by Ammen throughout his academic and military career from 1835 through 1865.

The Indiana University Trustees serve as the governing board of the university. Created in 1820, the current Board meets six times per year. Among the Board's powers are their capacity to possess all the real and personal property of the university; to expend the income of the university; and to all bylaws necessary to carry these powers into effect. The minutes in this collection include official acts, resolutions, policies, agreements, and other business pertaining to the governance of Indiana University between 1838-1859 and 1883-2017.

The James, J. mss., ca. 1835-1852, consists of letters, land inventories, and financial papers relating to Indiana land investments.

The Keesling, Arthur L. mss., 1834-1969, consists of material relating to the Keesling and Patton families of Anderson, Indiana, particularly Arthur L. Keesling, 1899-1973, and Elizabeth Emily Patton, 1866-1954.

The Wallace mss. III, 1834-1909, consists of microfilm reels of lawyer, soldier, diplomat, and author Lew Wallace and his wife, poet and author Susan Wallace.

The Jerauld mss., 1834-1898, consists of the business records of merchant George Nelson Jerauld, 1811-1894.

The Dunn mss., 1834-1850, consists of the papers of George Grundy Dunn, 1812-1857, lawyer and congressman of Bedford, Indiana.

The Weaver, W. mss. II, 1833-2006, consists of the correspondence, writings, research, photographs, and teaching materials pertaining to the life and work of literary critic and translator William Weaver, 1923-2013.

The Irwin mss., 1833-1940, consists of the letters and papers of members of the Irwin and Miller families of Columbus, Indiana, including Joseph Ireland Irwin, 1824-1910, businessman; his son, William Glanton Irwin, 1866-1943, businessman; John Chapman Miller, 1831-1901, minister of the Disciples of Christ; and his son, Hugh Thomas Miller, 1867-1947, teacher, businessman, and lieutenant governor of Indiana.

The United Presbyterian Church mss., 1833-1933, consists of the records of the United Presbyterian Church of Bloomington, Indiana, and its predecessors, the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, the Associate Presbyterian Church and the Reformed Presbyterian Congregation.

The Shaw mss., 1833-1908, consists of the letters and papers of William Shaw, 1817-1909, tailor.

The Hughes mss., 1833-1888, are legal papers of the law firm of Hughes, Denver and Peck, Washington, D.C., largely consisting of Confederate and Native American claims before the U.S. Court of Claims.

​The Evans mss., 1833-1873, consists of papers of Henry B. Evans, -1847?, physician and surgeon, of Marion County, Ind., and his heirs.

The Tresler mss., 1833-1873, consist of family letters, promissory notes, receipts, deeds, etc., 1833-1862, of Jacob Tresler of Monroe County, Indiana.

Indiana family headed by Joseph Kirkman, who served as sheriff of Gibson County for several years. Collection includes correspondence, indentures, receipts, land deeds, and newspaper clippings of Joseph Kirkman, daughter Irene Kirkman Coolidge, and granddaughter Mary Coolidge Kingston. Also included is a series titled Unknown authors, consisting of items of unknown origins but that were deposited with the collection.
