Collections

The Indiana University Folklore Archives was established in 1956 by Richard M. Dorson of the Indiana University Folklore Institute and grew to comprise 40,000 field collections gathered in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky, before closing in 1990. This collection contains the Folklore Archives' administrative files, special collections of prominent folklorists' research materials, reprints of journal articles, bibliographies, a collection of folksongs, and subject files and index cards on topics that include beliefs, customs, games, jokes, and legends.

Collection contains various scrapbooks, publications, yearbooks, reports, and a small amount of correspondence relating to Bloomington, Indiana, and Monroe County.

Before becoming president of Indiana University, Herman B Wells served as an assistant cashier at the National Bank of Lebanon before going on to work for the Indiana Bankers Association, the Indiana Commission for Financial Institutions, and the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions. He was named dean of the Indiana University School of Business administration in 1935 by IU President William Lowe Bryan. In 1937 he was named acting president of the university and president the following year, a position he held until 1962. Upon his retirement, IU created the position of University Chancellor, which Dr. Wells held until his death in 2000. This collection consists of Wells' personal papers and includes papers pertaining to his family and personal finances, his activities in the banking profession, his work in Germany for the United States government after World War II, and to his research and teaching and professional activities as a member of the faculty of Indiana University.

The Indiana University Trustees serve as the governing board of the university. Created in 1820, the current Board meets six times per year. Among the Board's powers are their capacity to possess all the real and personal property of the university; to expend the income of the university; and to all bylaws necessary to carry these powers into effect. The minutes in this collection include official acts, resolutions, policies, agreements, and other business pertaining to the governance of Indiana University between 1838-1859 and 1883-2017.

This collection consists of the family papers of Indiana University alumni John and Hilda Jay. The collection primarily consists of correspondence between John, Hilda, and family or friends largely spanning 1939-2002; personal files containing educational materials, a journal, and a scrapbook; as well as several home movies from circa 1939-1946.

Arthur R. Metz was a student at Indiana University from 1904-1909 and one of the first recipients of the IU Distinguished Alumni Service Award. He was a doctor who served in multiple capacities including for hospitals, railroads, the military, corporations, and universities and also was a member of many medical organizations. The collection consists of Metz's family records, school materials, personal and professional correspondence, personal photographs, military and travel materials and photographs, magazine and newspaper clippings, medical and organizational publications, and professional certificates. There are also papers and photographs documenting the Metz Foundation and Metz Suite.

The Indiana University Alumni Association was founded in 1854 as an organization through which graduates could contribute to the pursuit of university interests. Members of the Association held semi-annual meetings, first as the Alumni Association and later in separate branches, including the Alumni Council, established in 1913 (later called the Executive Council). This collection consists primarily of the minutes of the IU Alumni Association, Alumni Council, Executive Council, and Board of Managers meetings spanning 1854-2011.

With a history dating back to 1895, the Chemistry library was initially housed in Wylie Hall, however with the completion of the Chemistry building in the 1930s it relocated and remains in that location to this day. The collection consists primarily of administrative files such as handbook, notes and memos.

Robert Campbell was a professor of economics at Indiana University from 1961 until his retirement in 1993, during which he held the positions of chairperson for the Department of Economics and Director of the Russian and East European Institute. He was a scholar of centrally planned economies, especially of the former Soviet Union. The collection consists of materials used for his publication A Biobibliographical Dictionary of Russian and Soviet Economists, records related to his consultations and conferences, documents related to his distinguished professor nomination, and correspondence.

Both graduates of the University of California, Berkeley, Barbara and Charles Jelavich were hired at Indiana University in 1962 as specialists in Eastern European History by then Chair of the History Department Robert Byrnes. The majority of the collection reflects the work of Barbara while a small portion of the work of Charles is included with publications.

David G. Frey was a professor of zoology at Indiana University who specialized in limnology (aquatic ecology) and Cladocera (water flea). The collection consists of Frey's personal correspondence, reprints of most of his publications, as well as extensive research files encompassing his years as a limnologist.

Lynton K. Caldwell was an assistant professor of government at Indiana University South Bend from 1939-1944 and returned to Indiana University Bloomington in 1965, where he taught political science as well as public and environmental affairs until his retirement in 1984 as the Arthur F. Bentley Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Professor Emeritus of Public and Environmental Affairs. Caldwell was a recognized authority on environmental policy. His papers include a large amount of published works, but also contain correspondence and material related to conferences and professional organizations.

Nicolas Spulber was a Distinguished Professor of Economics at Indiana University. Born in Romania in 1915, he immigrated to the United States in 1948 and began teaching at IU in 1954. His research interests focused primarily on the Soviet and post-Soviet economy and the functions of states in economic frameworks including centrally planned, developing, and market economies. Spulber continued researching and writing until his death in 2004. The collection consists of his research materials, reports, conference presentations, correspondence, and manuscripts and reviews of his published works.

Established in 1902, the Panhellenic Association is the coordinating student organization for sororities at Indiana University. Collection consists of correspondence, publications, agendas, budget information, and scrapbooks.

The Indiana University Board of Trustees serve as the governing board of the University. Created in 1820, its powers include the capacity to possess all the real and personal property of the university, to allocate the income of the university, and to create or approve all rules necessary to carry these powers into effect. This collection contains agendas, correspondence and reports which support the discussion generated at the official Trustee meetings.

Collection consists of the papers of George List (1911-2008), Professor of Folklore, Director of the Inter-American Program in Ethnomusicology (1966-1976), and Director of the Archives of Traditional Music (1954-1976) at Indiana University. His primary research interests included folk music, the traditional music of the Hopi tribes of Northern Arizona, and the music of indigenous tribes in the Caribbean regions of Colombia and the Andes and Amazon regions of Ecuador. This collection includes personal and professional correspondence, publications, research, subject files, audiovisual content, and many of his musical compositions.

In 1894, Indiana University instituted a standing Committee on Advanced Degrees charged with directing the growing number of students undertaking graduate studies. Formal organization of the Graduate School was authorized by the faculty in 1904, with the continued governance of the Committee until the office of the dean within the IU Graduate School was created in 1908. At that time, the committee emerged as the Administrative Committee and in 1909 became the Graduate Council. As the school's faculty took over the duties of the council in the 1930s, the council was deemed unnecessary and disbanded. However, in the 1950s the Graduate School underwent a reorganization and the Graduate Council was reestablished. The council is still active, meeting monthly during the academic year. Collection consists of memos, proposals, reports, and minutes of the Indiana University Graduate Council.

James Madison is the Thomas and Kathryn Miller Professor Emeritus of History at Indiana University. He graduated from Indiana University and has spent nearly his entire career teaching at IU. The collection largely consists of materials relating to his written works and extensive service activities both at IU and within the state. Of particular interest are the notes and drafts for his books Eli Lilly: A Life, 1885-1977 (1989), Indiana Through Tradition and Change (1982), and The Indiana Way: A State History (1986). The collection also contains correspondence, class syllabi, various committee materials, and materials related to his activities within the History Department.

Consists of the personal papers of Edmondson and includes correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, research files, publications, records related to the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), teaching files, and departmental files.

This collection largely reflects the results of research conducted by the Indiana University Department of Astronomy at the Goethe Link Observatory and the Daniel Kirkwood Observatory. The collection discusses equipment and instruments relevant to their work, topics related to the observatories, papers related to the Conference on Red Giant Stars/Cool Star Conference, publications, record books containing collected data, and files about select faculty.

Dr. George C. Hale, 1891-1948, was an Indiana native and chemist for the Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, New Jersey. His research concentrated on ordnance both for military and commercial applications. The collection consists of biographical materials, correspondence, and photographs relating to Dr. Hale's education, career, and accomplishments.

Dr. Frank Anton Hoffmann was a PhD student in Folklore at Indiana University Bloomington from 1958 to 1968. He became a professor of English and Folklore at the State University of New York at Buffalo. This collection features Hoffmann's personal papers including correspondence, collected folklore society publications, and a photo album from the 1958 Folklore Institute.

The School of Journalism had its beginnings at Indiana University when the first journalism course was offered in 1891. A Department of Journalism was established in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1911, and in 1974 the department became the School of Journalism. The School of Journalism has had many well-known and successful graduates, including the famous World War II journalist Ernie Pyle. This collection consists of records of the Department/School of Journalism collected and compiled by Marjorie Blewett, an administrative assistant in Journalism from 1965-1980 and placement director from 1980-1990. The records within the collection consist largely of the correspondence and other administrative files generated by the directors or deans of the Department/School of Journalism. The majority of the records were generated by or sent to John Stempel and Richard Gray during the years 1938-1984, but Marjorie Blewett also contributes some her own personal records.

This collection consists of maps, audio recordings, news reports, advertisements, committee notes, photographs, and story transcripts for the campus ghost walks organized by the Indiana University Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology. The ghost walks are annual tours that feature ghost legends tied to well-known places on campus and the Bloomington, Indiana, area.

The Union Board serves as the governing body for the Indiana Memorial Union, which organizes various events and activities for students on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. Established in 1909, the Union Board has since developed into the largest student programming body at Indiana University. The Collection consists of minutes of Union Board meetings and a variety of administrative documents and materials related to past programs, activities, and events.

The University Women's Club was established at Indiana University on April 24, 1913, under the name of the Faculty Women's Club. The goal of the club was to hold social gatherings for members. In 1959 the group changed its name to the University Women's Club to avoid further confusion with the Women's Faculty Club. The collection consists of meeting minutes and reports, subject files and scrapbooks.

Theodore Bowie was a prominent faculty member at Indiana University, whose contributions to the field of the history of Asian Art made him a pivotal figure in the development of both the University's Art History Program and the University's Art Museum. This collection contains materials from both Bowie's professional and personal career. Professional documents from his time spent as professor and curator include lecture notes, travel itineraries, copies of scholarly publications, departmental memos and correspondence, loan agreements for exhibitions, and exhibition catalogues. A large number of exhibition materials pertain to "The Arts of Thailand", a traveling exhibition organized by Bowie that showcased previously unrecognized Thai art in the West. Accompanying these professional documents are Bowie's personal correspondence, drafts of his memoir, and a large number of photos and exhibition scrapbooks.

Henry H. H. Remak was hired at Indiana University-Bloomington as a full-time professor for the Department of German in 1948. He also taught for the Department of Comparative Literature, West European Studies and the Honors Division. Additionally, Remak chaired the Department of German in 1962, the Department of Comparative Literature intermittently between 1954 and 1963, as well as West European Studies from 1966-1969. He was also Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties from 1969-1974 and Director of the Institute for Advanced Study from 1988-1994 and 1997-1998. This collection consists of papers related to Remak's teaching, administrative positions, university and disciplinary service, and academic scholarship.

George T. Engelman Jr. was a graduate from Indiana University, attending IU from 1937-1941. He worked and raised his family for a few years in Bloomington while studying for his master's degree in education in the 40s and 50s and working for RCA. He was also a WWII veteran. This collection contains his army records from 1942-1968, biographical documents from 1915-2008, correspondence, family home videos, teaching documents, and materials from his time serving in WWII such as ration stamps and Pearl Harbor Officers' Club cards.

William R. Ringer graduated from Indiana University in 1920. After earning his JD at the University of Michigan, he went on to have a successful legal career. This small collection consists primarily of diaries and journals maintained while Ringer was an Indiana University student.

Allen Day Grimshaw was a Professor of Sociology at IU from 1959-1994. The collection consists primarily of his research, published works, and teaching files as they relate to IU.

Although military training has a long history at Indiana University, the Department of Military Science and Tactics was established in 1917. The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) fell under the auspices of the department and was a compulsory program for all male students at IU until 1964. The Department of Military Science (Reserve Officers Training Corps) records span the years 1918-2000. These records are organized into seven series: Correspondence, Historical information, ROTC organizations, Publications, Subject files, Realia, and Photos and scrapbooks. The bulk of the collection consists of the Organizations and Subject files series. All series except Correspondence are arranged alphabetically.

Marvin Carmack was a professor of chemistry at Indiana University who specialized in organic chemistry and the study of lithospermum ruderale, among other research interests. The collection consists of Carmack's personal and professional correspondence, extensive research notes from his two university appointments and numerous private laboratory work, teaching materials from a variety of classes he taught as well as research notes from some of his students.

Established in 1941, the Indiana University Art Museum has amassed over 45,000 pieces spanning ancient artifacts to modern works. This collection consists of exhibition catalogs, marketing material, as well as catalogs and advertisements from the museum's earliest days.

The Board of Aeons was established on March 29, 1921 to function as a link between the student body and the administration. It is composed of 8 to 12 students of at least junior standing and meets regularly but informally once or twice a week with the President, Vice-President, Chancellor or other administrative officials. The Board of Aeons records include minutes, agendas, reports, correspondence, and officers' notebooks.

Chemistry has a long history at Indiana University, first being added to the curriculum in 1829 by then-IU President Andrew Wylie. The majority of this collection is comprised of faculty publications, mostly dating from the 1950s to the late 1970s. It also contains a small number of departmental publications, such as the Association of Indiana University Chemists newsletters, and administrative files related to laboratory safety, chemistry departments at regional campuses, and other departmental affairs.

The Alpha Lambda Delta fraternity was founded in 1924 at the University of Illinois as an honor society for freshmen women. The chapter at Indiana University was established in 1931. This collection consists of membership information, rules, awards, and the history of the organization.

The Indiana University Libraries have existed for the length and tenure of the University itself. As the University has grown, so have the libraries, its holdings, and its staff, and this growth has resulted in the 8 campus and more than 10 million volume system that exists today. The Indiana University Libraries' publications consists of publications the Department has published during the period from 1924-2012 including Lilly Library publications.

Indiana University's Collins Living-Learning Center (LLC) was established in 1972 - one of the first in the country - in the Men's Residence Center (MRC). Eventually the LLC took over the entire MRC and was renamed after IU professor and administrator Ralph L. Collins. It has since expanded to include "The Hill," Brown and Greene, and Hillcrest (apartments for juniors and seniors). The Collins community is intentionally academically diverse, and students pursue majors across the university. Collins is host to a wide variety of programs and events planned through one of many student groups such as the Board of Education Programming (BOEP), Arts Council, Community Council, and the Board of Programmers (BOP), or as student Q projects through CLLC-Q 199: Residential Learning Workshop. The materials in the Collection represent both the administrative and student aspects of the Collins Living-Learning Center.

The Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance originated in the Department of Speech beginning in 1945. The Department offers courses and degrees in theatre, drama, and contemporary dance. This collection contains administrative records from before and after the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance had split from the Department of Speech. It also contains records and production materials from the University Theatre, Brown County Playhouse, Indiana Theatre Company, and IU Theatre Circle.

Alpha Phi Omega is a national service fraternity founded on leadership, friendship, and service. The Mu Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega was established at Indiana University on December 15, 1929. The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, pledge records, newsletters, awards, videotapes, photographs, and scrapbooks.

Jane Fox, a dancer and faculty member of Indiana University, introduced the art of contemporary dance to the Bloomington campus in 1927 with the inception of the Contemporary Dance Program under the auspices of the Physical Education program (renamed Kinesiology in 1989). While it was first considered a women's extracurricular physical fitness program, it quickly evolved into a respected major and minor field. The program's objective was to teach students to use modern dance to convey ideas and feelings through natural movements. This collection includes scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, program booklets, photographs, film, sheet music, and miscellaneous records pertaining to the Program.

Robert F. Borkenstein worked in various capacities with the Indiana State Police in collaboration with Indiana University before retiring in 1958 and coming to IU full time, serving as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Police Administration until his retirement in 1987. He played a major role in developing the department, which was renamed the Department of Forensic Studies in 1970 and again renamed the Department of Criminal Justice in 1985. Borkenstein was a prolific figure in the fields of forensic science and traffic safety; he is well known for inventing the Breathalyzer in 1954 and for research efforts into blood alcohol concentration through the Grand Rapids Study in the 1960s. This collection consists of biographical documents, research and professional materials, instruments, and subject files. Included are files and instruments related to Borkenstein's research and development of several of his breath test inventions, including the Breathalyzer.

Mary Geraldine Hatt studied history at Indiana University and went on to complete an MA in International Relations before teaching social studies in South Bend, Indiana. Her international experience includes serving in the American Red Cross Hospital in Europe and receiving the first Fulbright Scholarship for travel to South Africa. Her papers consist of correspondence beginning with her freshman year at I.U., various materials relating to Miss Hatt's time in South Africa as a Fulbright Scholar, and travel diaries which record her frequent trips throughout the world.

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is a nationwide organization established in 1915, and is open to membership by faculty, librarians, and academic professionals at accredited public and private colleges and universities. Its mission is to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define professional values and standards within higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good. There is evidence that the Indiana University Bloomington Chapter of the American Association of University Professors was active on campus as early as 1916 and remains active to the present. The collection consists of group publications, minutes, notes, correspondence, and other related materials.

The Union Board serves as the governing body for the Indiana Memorial Union, which organizes various events and activities for students on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. Established in 1909, the Union Board has since developed into the largest student programming body at Indiana University. The Collection consists of scrapbooks which were created by staff annually from 1932 to the present.

David Kaser was a professor in the School of Library and Information Science from 1973 to his retirement in 1991. This collection consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence, including letters to family and professional colleagues; date books listing Kaser's appointments, classes, and meetings; publications including copies of his books, journal articles, and reports, primarily dealing with the history of the development of American libraries, academic library administration, and the design and construction of library buildings; biographical and personal information which includes his resume, a list of his publications, and information on his consulting activities; and teaching records which includes VHS recordings of two courses which Kaser taught.

The B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation is a Jewish student organization that has been on the Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) campus since 1938. This collection consists entirely of IUB Hillel publications, including their newspapers the Hillel Herald and Bloomington Jewish Student, which contained information for the students about events and the High Holidays. The collection consists of three folders of newsletters and other publications spanning 1933-2003. There is a gap between 1967-2003.

Karl F. Schuessler graduated at Indiana University in 1947 with a Ph.D. in sociology. Soon after his graduation, he joined the faculty at Indiana University, where he remained until his retirement in 1985. This collection contains Schuessler's published articles, manuscripts, correspondence, and subject files.

Originally published as the Journal of the Folklore Institute in 1964 by the Folklore Institute, the Journal of Folklore Research was established in 1982 to incorporate more international and expansive coverage. The goal of the journal is to link similar social sciences such as anthropology, communication, history, linguistics, literature, oral history, psychology and sociology. The collection consists of administrative files, including various advertisements, correspondence, editorial board meeting papers, as well as accepted and rejected articles which were retained to document the selection and edit processes. There are also miscellaneous copies of JFR and some other printed materials.

Founded in 1948, the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center was designed to promote community gardening at Indiana University. From the beginning, Hilltop was jointly sponsored by IU, the city of Bloomington's Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Bloomington Garden Club. Collection includes correspondence, photographs, architectural drawings, scrapbooks, minutes, reports, and publications and records relating to the Hilltop Educational Foundation and Hilltop Garden Council.

Omega Psi Phi is a predominantly African-American fraternity. The Zeta Epsilon chapter was chartered at Indiana University in 1947. The collection consists of records created and collected by the Zeta Epsilon chapter and includes program materials, minutes and reports from national, district, and local meetings.

The Department of French and Italian at Indiana University was established in 1934, when the Department of Romantic Languages split into French and Italian and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. This collection covers the period 1935-2015 and consists of administrative files, such as annual reports, minutes, and newsletters, as well as faculty files that include articles, newspaper clippings, curricula vitae, correspondence, and other material.

The Latino Cultural Center was established at Indiana University in 1973. It is more affectionately known as La Casa. Its purpose was, and continues to be, to achieve through educational and social programs, a greater historical, political and cultural awareness regarding the latine community. The collection consists of records created by the Latino Cultural Center while under the direction of the Office of Latino Affairs, documents from student organizations, such as Latinos Unidos at Indiana University (LUIU), and other documents realted to the history and interests of the Latino Cultural Center including correspondence, publications, events, annual reports, and subject files.

Charles B. Heiser was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Botany at Indiana University and considered to be an authority on capsicum, tortora and gourds. The collection consists of his research and correspondence.

Edward Najam arrived at IU in 1954 and remained as a professor of French until his retirement in 1987. Professor Najam took an early lead in advancing foreign language study nationwide in the early sixties and emerged as a leader in developing methods of teaching foreign languages. Najam's papers contain awards and diplomas, biographical information, correspondence, and publications.

Charles R. Forker was a professor of English at Indiana University from 1959 to 1992. He was a known Shakespeare scholar and teacher. Collection consists of Forker's correspondence, research, teaching files, and publications.

Philosophy has been taught at Indiana University since its founding, but it was not until 1929 that the Department of Philosophy was officially established as an independent department. This collection consists of administrative records, many having to do with the department's involvement in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. There are also class descriptions and schedules, departmental reviews, papers relating to the Ewing Essay Prize, staff meeting minutes and agendas, and other miscellaneous records.

Lawrence M. Langer was a physics professor at Indiana University. Aside from Langer's work as an IU faculty member, Langer is widely known for his work on the atomic bomb that was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. The Langer papers represent much of Langer's life during World War II but also features projects and publications that he worked on throughout his career as a physicist.

The Indiana University Physical Plant was the central department for university buildings and grounds upkeep from 1959-2015. Prior to 1959 the Physical Plant was part of the Department of Buildings and Grounds. In 2015 the Physical Plant was renamed Facility Operations. This collection includes annual reports and newsletters issued by the department from 1938-2007.

The William T. Patten Foundation was founded at Indiana University in May 1931 by Indiana University alumnus William T. Patten. The Foundation hosts scholars from various institutions and disciplines to give lectures in his/her area of expertise. This collection contains files on each scholar who has assumed the role of Patten Lecturer since 1968. The files include recommendations from IU faculty to the Patten Committee, programs, and correspondence, as well as some audio and video recordings of the lectures.

Martha Lipton was a prolific performer at the New York Metropolitan Opera as a mezzo-soprano for sixteen seasons. She was a soloist who sang under the direction of many renowned conductors before coming to Indiana University Bloomington as a Professor of Voice in 1960. This collection contains professional promotional materials, clippings and performance programs spanning her career.

Denis Sinor was a faculty member of Indiana University in the Uralic and Altaic Program (now the Department of Central Eurasian Studies) from 1962 to 2011. Sinor founded the Department of Uralic and Altaic Studies in 1965 and the Asian Studies Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies (now the Sinor Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies [RIFIAS]), both of which he served as director for until his retirement from IU in 1986. He was active in many organizations during his tenure at Indiana University, most significantly the Journal of Asian History (JAH), Permanent International Altaistic Conference (PIAC), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and National Defense Education Act (NDEA). This collection consists of Sinor's correspondence with various organizations, IU, and personal contacts.

Menahem Pressler has been a professor of music at Indiana University, Bloomington since 1955, and an internationally acclaimed concert pianist since 1940. Pressler is recognized as one of the world's premier chamber musicians, solo performers, group artists, and pedagogues, and currently holds the rank of Distinguished Professor of Music as the Charles Webb Chair at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. His papers include biographical information, clippings, and program booklets.

Thomas Sebeok (1920-2001) was an internationally renowned semiotician who taught at Indiana University from 1943 to 2001. This collection documents Sebeok's career at Indiana University and contains correspondence, subject files, publications, research and grant materials, and departmental and committee records.

Held annually since 1940, the Indiana University Writers' Conference provides workshops and classes that offer writers of all levels the opportunity to learn from a faculty of well-known and award-winning authors. Correspondence between Conference staff and potential faculty members as well as various administrative files are represented in the contents of this collection.

The first Halls of Residence Library at Indiana University was created in 1940. It was located in the Men's Residence Center (now the Collins Living-Learning Center). The idea for these libraries came from President Herman B Wells and Halls of Residence Director Alice Nelson, who had visited schools in the east and seen these types of libraries being utilized in university settings. At first administered by the libraries, the Halls of Residence Libraries were transferred to Residential Programs and Services in 2001. This collection includes annual reports, subject files, correspondence and student papers written over the years about the libraries.

Folklore and Ethnomusicology Publications, Inc. was created in 1988 as the umbrella organization for four Indiana University Folklore Institute student publications groups. It encompasses Folklore Forum Society, Folklore Publications Group, Trickster Press, and Ethnomusicology Publications Group. This collection contains mostly articles submitted for publication in the various Folklore and Ethnomusicology publications as well as the journals produced by the different titles.

Since its inception, the Government Publications Department (GPD) at Indiana University has aimed to offer free access of government publications and other information to the general public. The GPD, now known as Government Information and Kent Cooper Services, houses records from city, county, state and federal governments, as well as many publications from foreign governments and international organizations. The collection consists of correspondence, reports, statistics, policy changes, and other information regarding GPD administration.

The University Division was established at Indiana University Bloomington in 1942, under the name of Junior Division. Originally created as a response to wartime conditions, the University Division currently serves as an academic advising system for freshman and sophomore students who have not yet selected a major. The collection consists primarily of records from Sally J. Dunn's tenure (2000-2007) as Dean of the University Division and includes correspondence, records related to University Division programs, brochures, reports, administrative files, advising files, and publications.

The Indiana University Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology was formally established in 2000 through the merging of the Department of Folklore (1978-2000) and the Ethnomusicology Institute (1980-2000) and is the parent department of the IU Folklore Institute and IU Ethnomusicology Institute. This collection contains administrative files, subject files, correspondence, files and audio recordings of the Special Projects unit, grant and budget information, and conference files produced by the department and its affiliated institutes from 1942 through 2010.

Howard Gest was a professor of Microbiology and an adjunct professor of History and Philosophy of Science at Indiana University who specialized in microbial psychology and metabolism. The collection consists of Gest's published work, research notes, correspondence and his teaching and lecturing notes during his tenure at Indiana University.

Eugene Chen Eoyang is Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature and of East Asian Languages and Cultures and was a member of the Indiana University faculty from 1966-2002. Collection consists of papers from his time teaching at Indiana University, as well as papers of his own areas of research and professional projects.

A. Peter Brown served as a member of the musicology faculty at the Indiana University School of Music from 1974 until his death in 2003. Brown's name is most closely associated with that of the composer Josef Haydn, on whom Brown wrote and co-authored no less than four books, as well as the critical score for Haydn's Die Schöpfung. Representing the whole of his scholarly career, this collection includes materials from Brown's time as a doctoral student, and as a scholar and teacher, comprised of correspondence, teaching files, grants materials, and research and writing files. Brown's research files make up the bulk of the collection.

John Ryan was Indiana University's 14th president and served the institution for 30 years. Ryan was instrumental in the creation and inaugurals of eight I.U. charter campuses. This collection consists of Dr. Ryan's president emeritus records, including documents concerning his activities in international affairs and speeches he gave between 1987-2011.

Samuel Fiszman was a professor in the Indiana University Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures from 1970 until 1985. His research interests focused on Polish and Russian literature. The collection consists of teaching materials and publications, as well as correspondence related to these endeavors.

The position of Associate Dean of Research and Operations was established within the School of Business administration in 1984 with the appointment of George W. Hettenhouse. Collection consists of administrative files, correspondence, grants, and program files that represent the activities of the Associate Dean of Research and Operations and the Kelley School of Business.

Carlos O. Miller was a faculty member within the Department of Biology at Indiana University from 1957 until his retirement in 1987. This collection includes publications, research notes, and correspondence.

This collection contains the records of the High School Journalism Institute from 1947-2003. The Institute was formed to provide secondary students with the opportunity to learn about journalism by offering workshops in newspaper and yearbook publication. There are eight series in this collection: Scholarship and award files; Subject files; Administrative files; Faculty files; Newspaper files; Publications; Scrapbook files; and Photographs.

Jean-Paul Darriau was an associate professor of sculpture at Indiana University from 1961-1996. The collection consists of biographical materials, correspondence, art catalogues, as well as a large assortment of photographs and slides taken by Darriau of his work and during his travels.

The Russian and East European Institute, comprised of several departments at Indiana University, was established in 1958 and is one of the leading area studies centers in the country. The collection consists of funding applications, projects, programs and administrative files related to the institute and it departments.

Camilla Williams was an internationally acclaimed soprano opera vocalist who broke racial bias barriers in society as well as professionally. Miss Williams came to Indiana University in 1977 as a professor of voice at the Jacobs School of Music. The collection contains performance posters, correspondence, clippings about her career and former student's accomplishments, photographs, awards, plaques, and scrapbooks.

Ruth C. Engs served as a professor of applied health sciences at Indiana University, joining the faculty in 1973 and retiring with emeritus status in 2003. Her main areas of research included the study of the determinants of drinking behavior, especially that of university students, and the study of the role of alcohol in society in cross-cultural and historical contexts. The Ruth C. Engs papers contain documentation on her scholastic career, including files related to research, publications, and professional activities. The collection also contains subject correspondence, teaching files, personal and administrative files, and audiovisual and computer media.

Formerly part of the Department of Slavic Studies, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures was established as an independent department in 1958. Fields of study in the department include concentrations on the languages, literature, and linguistics of the Slavic and non-Slavic East European peoples. Included in this collection are administrative files, faculty and teaching personnel files, and materials on the language programs and workshops sponsored by the department.

Felix Oinas, a world renowned scholar in the areas of Slavic linguistics, Finno-Ugric language, literature, and folklore, was a professor of Uralic and Altaic Studies and Slavic Languages and Literatures at Indiana University from 1950 until his retirement in 1981. The collection consists of Oinas' correspondence, publications, and research on Balto-Finnic and Slavic folklore, the relation of Balto-Finnic folklore as compared to Baltic (Lithuanian and Latvian) folklore, the Estonian epic Kalevipoeg, mythology (including the study of spirits, ghosts, devils, and vampires), and the study of Slavic and Finnish etymologies.

Indiana University's Wright Quadrangle is a residence center that was constructed after the post-WWII enrollment boon, opening in 1949. The collection contains administrative files pertaining to training and policy/protocol for resident assistants, room renovations and damages, and closing reports. Additionally, the student publications series contains newspapers created by residents of various "houses" or units.

Edward Grant, a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History and History and Philosophy of Science taught at Indiana University for over thirty years. This collection consists of 24.6 cubic of Edward Grant's papers. Consists of correspondence, research, drafts, publications, and course and lecture notes. By far the largest series in the collection is the Teaching series and includes materials from Grant's years teaching as a graduate student at the Univ. of Wisconsin and then later at Indiana. The bulk of the series, though, consists of folders relating to the courses he taught in the IU Dept. of History and Philosophy of Science. The Publications series contains information on many of Grant's publications, including his books Much ado about nothing and Source book in medieval science.

The Indiana University Fine Arts Library opened in 1962 in conjunction with the dedication of the new Fine Arts Building. Betty Jo (B.J.) Irvine served as the Director of the Fine Arts Library from 1969 to 2007. This collection consists of materials related to her tenure as Director of the Fine Arts Library.

Alfred Diamant was a professor of Political Science at Indiana University from 1967 to 1988 and served as the Chair of Political Science and West European Studies. He taught all levels of political science from introductory to doctoral courses with a special interest in comparative government. This collection consists of Diamant's academic papers including class material, student correspondence, and personal publications.

John W. Ryan served as the fourteenth president of Indiana University from 1971-1987. During this time, he was awarded many honors, including honorary degrees, and was active in many organizations. These organizations include the Air Force's Air University, American Society for Public Administration, Indiana Bell Telephone Company, College of St. Thomas, and State Life Insurance Company. These papers include records regarding his membership in various organizations outside and apart from IU, teaching files, speeches as well as correspondence and other personal files.

Paul A. Pietsch was a Professor in the School of Optometry and an Adjunct Professor of Anatomy at Indiana University from 1970 until his retirement in 1994. His research concentrated on the connections between the brain, mind, and memory, as well as limb regeneration. The collection contains his teaching materials, subject files, professional and academic correspondence, and a wide array of research materials, including publications, visual materials, and research notebooks.

Rudy Pozzatti was on the faculty at Indiana University from 1956-1991 and upon his retirement, received the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus. In 1979, he helped found the Echo Press, a printmaking workship in Bloomington. Prof. Pozzatti was recognized as one of the prominent printmakers in the country and has works exhibited throughout the world. This collection consists of Prof. Pozzatti's biographical information, show and exhibition materials, as well as personal correspondence spanning over 50 years. Also included are photographs of his works, plates and woodblocks as well as some original posters. There are no files related to his teaching.

Randy Long (1951- ) is a metalsmith and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Indiana University Bloomington (1983 – 2018), leading the Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design program for the School of Art, Architecture and Design. This collection primarily contains Long's instruction materials, exhibition records, personal artistic and research papers, and her correspondence.

Born in 1927, John R. Kreuger taught Turkic and Mongolian languages in the department of Uralic and Altaic Studies at Indiana University Bloomington from 1962-1985. During his career he was an active member of the Mongolia Society and accomplished writer, translator and editor of works relating to Central Asian languages. The collection consists of correspondence files relating to his professional and personal life and written works spanning his entire career.

Dr. Gerardo M. Gonzalez is Dean Emeritus and Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the Indiana University School of Education. In 1962, when Gonzalez was eleven years old, he and his family immigrated to the United States as refugees from Cuba. The first in his family to graduate from college, Gonzalez has since become a prominent academic leader in the United States and a proponent for higher education leadership, healthy campus environments, and Latino educational concerns. The papers and photos in this collection relate to Gonzalez's upbringing and his family's emigration from Cuba to the United States in the early 1960s, as well as Gonzalez' education and academic appointments. Many of the materials in this collection are reproduced or referenced in Gonzalez's 2018 memoir A Cuban Refugee's Journey to the American Dream: The Power of Education .

The Population Institute for Research and Training was founded at Indiana University in 1986 as a center for interdisciplinary population studies. The Center's purpose was to facilitate research and training activities related to demography including courses, seminars, and research projects. This collection contains administrative files, information on courses and seminars, and various working papers.

Howard Mehlinger served as a professor within the School of Education from 1965 until his retirement in 1997, at which time he was granted the title Professor Emeritus of Education. During his tenure at IU he served in two major administrative positions: Dean of the School of Education from 1981 to 1989 and as Director for the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) from 1993 to 1999. His major research foci included: issues involving Soviet-United States education and globalization, technology's role in the classroom, and high school social studies education. The content of this collection consists of papers documenting various IU and personal research initiatives, projects, and consulting positions; publications and speaking engagements; professional files; syllabi, reading lists, and documents for various courses, workshops, and seminars he taught at both IU and Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Kansas; and personal, professional, and institutional correspondence.

Richard Bauman taught in the Indiana University Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology from 1986 until his retirement in 2008. The Bauman papers consist of his teaching materials, awards, publications, conference contributions, research projects, fieldwork materials, correspondence, and student recommendations.

Student government at Indiana University was officially formed in April 1948 due in large part to the influence of IU President Herman B Wells. Following a series of name changes, student government in 1973 became known as the Indiana University Student Association (IUSA). In 2019 they changed their name again to Indiana University Student Government (IUSG). This collection consists of the records of the IUSA including: Meeting minutes and agendas; resolutions; administrative files; records of the IUSA President , Vice-President for Senate/ Congress, Vice- President for Administration, Treasurer and the Supreme Court; association, committee and department files; and issue, project and subject files. These records primarily cover the period from 1973-2010.
