The Lafayette mss., 1572-1939, consist of correspondence and papers assembled by banker Walter P. Gardner around the central figure of Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette, 1757-1834, general.

The Lafayette mss. III, 1759-1880, consist of a bound volume of holograph correspondence and documents assembled around the central figure of Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette, 1757-1834, general, his contemporaries, among whom were Pierre François Audry de Puyraveau and Jacques Charles Dupont de l'Eure, and members of his family.

The Lafayette mss. II, 1774-1957, are individual letters and documents relating to the Marquis de Lafayette, Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, 1757-1834, general, which have been acquired from several sources.

The Gerstein mss., ca. 1795-1824, consists mostly of portraits of General Lafayette collected by Jacob and Sylvia Finn Gerstein.

The Gottschalk mss., 1935-1948, consists of correspondence between Louis Gottschalk, 1899-1975, historian, and Walter Pennett Gardner, 1869-1949, banker, concerning the collection of Lafayette manuscripts assembled by Gardner and about the organization of The American Friends of Lafayette.
