Collections

This collection documents the careers of the Calloway family including brothers Reggie, Vincent, and Gregory and their mother Gloria Calloway Larson, who variously formed and/or managed the groups Sunchild, Midnight Star, Calloway and Sharp. Included are personal papers, correspondence, business and financial records, tour itineraries, publicity materials, press clippings, programs, photographs, and time-based media in both published and unpublished audio and video formats.

Camilla Williams was an internationally acclaimed soprano opera vocalist who broke racial bias barriers in society as well as professionally. Miss Williams came to Indiana University in 1977 as a professor of voice at the Jacobs School of Music. The collection contains performance posters, correspondence, clippings about her career and former student's accomplishments, photographs, awards, plaques, and scrapbooks.

The Campbell, Mary mss., 1954-2012, consist of the personal correspondence, writings, photographs, concert and theatre programs, and professional materials of music and theatre journalist Mary Campbell.

This collection contains academic campus bulletins outlining degrees and classes offered at Indiana University South Bend, as well as early Indiana University extension courses offered in the South Bend-Mishawaka area before the establishment of IU South Bend as a stand-alone university, from 1915 to the present day. Campus bulletins contain information about the curriculum at Indiana University South Bend, as well as administrative leadership, academic policies, and general information about the campus. Campus bulletins are an excellent resource for tracing the history of degrees and classes offered at the university over time.

The Capra Press mss., 1955-2010 , contain the correspondence, book production materials, manuscripts, galleys, printing records, and cost sheets of printer/publisher Noel Young of Santa Barbara, California.

The materials in this collection relate to Carl MaultsBy's activities as a composer, arranger, conductor, organist, keyboardist, singer, author and former music industry executive. Included are scores and recordings of his compositions as well as concert programs, photographs, notated music, sound recordings, videos and information about his performances and recordings.

Carlos O. Miller was a faculty member within the Department of Biology at Indiana University from 1957 until his retirement in 1987. This collection includes publications, research notes, and correspondence.

Periodicals covering popular and rhythm & blues musicians and recordings, but primarily collected for their articles focusing on vocal harmony groups and quartettes of the 1950s-1960s. Also included are articles by Tancredi and airchecks from his internet radio program, "Work With Me Annie."

Carole Yvonne Johnson (1940- ) is a dancer, choreographer, and activist known for her focus on Black contemporary and Aboriginal dance. This collection contains her personal papers including records on her dance companies and tours throughout Australia and the United States.

The Carroll L. Lurding Library of College Fraternity and Sorority Materials mss., ca 1840-2014, consist of books, pamphlets, histories, yearbooks, and other bound volumes detailing the history of fraternities, sororities, colleges, and universities from all 50 states and the District of Columbia in the United States as well as some colleges in Canada.

The Casady mss., circa 1980-2001, consist of writings, correspondence, and photographs of Mortimer Jerome Adler, 1902-2001, philosopher and educator.

The Catbird Press mss., ca. 1983-2003, consists primarily of the files of small, independent book publisher Catbird Press.

The Center for Earth and Environmental Science Records include newspaper clippings, publications, data reports, and research. The records cover the center, its projects, its research, and publications between 1987 to 2011.

The Center for the Art of Translation mss., 1994-2010, consists of editorial files, proof copies, correspondence, and other material relating primarily to the Center's publication of Two Lines, an annual bilingual anthology of international literature featuring work from approximately twenty different languages.

The Chambers, Anthony mss., 1969-2006, consists of correspondence, printer's proofs, reader's notes, drafts, fliers, and reviews of the translation works of Anthony Chambers.

The Chambrun mss. consists of correspondence and political papers of French lawyer Charles-Adolphe de Pinetone, Marquis de Chambrun.

Charles B. Heiser was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Botany at Indiana University and considered to be an authority on capsicum, tortora and gourds. The collection consists of his research and correspondence.

Materials documenting the period Charles Connor, known as "Little Richard's original drummer," spent on the road with Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Dee Clark, Larry Williams, Chuck Willis, and others. Included are more recent articles, interviews, and audio recordings of Connor and an unpublished book manuscript.

Research on the Motown Record Corp., including photographs, Motown-related videos and television programs, and audio and video interviews with vocalists, instrumentalists, arrangers, songwriters, producers, technical staff, management, and consumers. Interviews include Thomas "Beans" Bowles (saxophonist and first road manager of the Motor Town Revue), Maxwell Powell (image specialist at Motown's Division of Artist Development), Bobby Rogers and Ronald White (vocalists with the Miracles), Sylvia Moy (songwriter), and Michael McLean (audio technician).

Charles R. Forker was a professor of English at Indiana University from 1959 to 1992. He was a known Shakespeare scholar and teacher. Collection consists of Forker's correspondence, research, teaching files, and publications.

Charlie Nelms (b. 1946) served in executive leadership roles for the Indiana University system for a total of twenty-four years between 1978 and 2007. This collection spans Nelms' personal life and professional career in university administration at IU and other institutions. The collection includes writings, correspondence, publications and reports, and ephemera.

The Chicano Writers mss., 1973-2005, consists of the writings of several Chicano writers submitted to editor and publisher Cecilio García-Camarillo for review.

The Christ mss. 1967-2007, consists primarily of notes and drafts of translations by Professor Emeritus of English Ronald Christ. In addition, it contains collected papers from fellow authors and translators Helen Lane and Charles Greenleaf Bell.

Claire Robertson is an Emeritus Professor of Women's Studies and History at Ohio State University and has been a visiting scholar, lecturer, and adjunct professor at Indiana University, Bloomington at various times since 1978. This collection consists of a portion of Robertson's teaching materials, research, and writings on the history and culture of women in Africa, as well as records related to her career and professional activities at Indiana University.

The Claxon mss. II, 1937-2004, consists of the personal papers of Baptist missionaries William Neville and Emma (Osborne) Claxon.

The Coates mss., ca. 2000-2003, consist of correspondence, drafts, corrected proofs and publication related files for the English translation L'espace d'un cillement by Jacques Stéphen Alexis.

The Collins mss., ca. 1926-2001, consists of the correspondence, writings, photographs, albums and chess club records of influential American chess teacher John William (Jack) Collins, 1912-2001.

The Comic Art mss., 1906-1967, consists of original illustrations for comic books, newspaper comic sections, pulp magazines, and film animations.

This project centers around interviews with professional and/or personal acquaintances of Elinor and Vincent Ostrom. Every interview explores a unique relationship with the Ostroms and the continuing impact of the Ostrom Workshop at Indiana University. Elinor (Lin) and Vincent Ostrom founded the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis in 1973.The Ostrom Workshop has been the catalyst for worldwide collaboration in the field of public policy and environmental issues. "Coming Together" is an interdisciplinary exploration of the legacy and impact of Elinor (Lin) and Vincent Ostrom. Major topics include; academia, "the commons", cross-disciplinary collaboration, Elinor Ostrom's Nobel Prize, the Ostrom Workshop, political science, political theory, and the Workshop on the Ostrom Workshop (WOW) conference. The project was created to assist in the dissertation research of Sara Catherine Clark, who was a doctoral candidate within the School of Education, pursing a Ph.D. in History, Philosophy, and Policy in Education, at Indiana University Bloomington. Sara Catherine Clark's dissertation was completed in 2019 and is cited as follows: Clark, S. C. (2019). Elinor ostrom: A biography of interdisciplinary life.

Since 1993, the Communications Workers of America has represented Indiana University's clerical and technical workers. The collection consists of newsletters, brochures, fliers, memos, press releases and newspaper clippings.

A collection of cookbooks printed in the United States between 1907 and 2008, with particular focus on cookbooks from Indiana.

The Constantine mss., 1995-2002, consists of literary translations by Peter Constantine, 1963-, of German and Russian authors.

The Conti mss., 2000-2002, consists of correspondence, readers' reports and manuscript drafts relating to Gregory Conti's translation into English of Rosetta Loy's Cioccolata da Hanselmann.

The Contreni, John J. mss., 2015, consist of a typescript and printed issue containing Contreni's article "'A Story that Can't be Printed'" about the final ceremony held at the burial of Ernie Pyle on Ie Shima.

The Corman mss. III, 1943-2004, consists of the papers of poet, translator and editor Cid Corman, 1924-2004.

The Corman mss. V, 1993–2002, consists of letters from poet, translator, and editor Sidney "Cid" Corman, 1924–2004, to poet and translator Nicolas Linkert.

The Corman mss. VI, 1993–2003, consist mostly of letters from poet, translator and editor Cid Corman, 1924–2004, to German poet and carpenter Charlie Mehrhoff.

The Costa, Margaret Jull mss., 1980–2016, consists of the papers of one of the most important literary translators of her time, Margaret Jull Costa, 1949-.

The Cotter mss., 2002-2003, consists of drafts and documentation for an interview with the Romanian writer Norman Manea by translator Sean Cotter.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) is an organization formed by the 1975 merger of the American Alumni Council (AAC) and the American College Public Relations Association (ACPRA). Constituents of both groups believed their goal of increasing the professional competence of those individuals involved in all phases of alumni work including, alumni administration, educational fund raising, public relations and publications in order to promote the cause of education could be better achieved as a single entity. The collection contains the records of CASE and its predecessor institutions covering the development of the early organizations and their merger to form the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Established in 1927, the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) undertakes projects to help U.S. state education agencies develop and implement educational policies and advocates for educational reforms at the state and national levels. Dr. Fred Czarra was the Director of International Education and Specialist in Social Studies and Interdisciplinary Learning at the Council for Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) from 1986-2006. The collection includes CCSSO committee meeting minutes, grant projects and reports, correspondence, curriculum standards, lesson plans, and publications, as well as a small amount of Czarra's personal papers.

The Coronavirus Days: Archive Your Story is a collaborative effort between the Department of History and University Archives. The project contains 38 submissions that consist of written works, photographs, videos, and physical creations, all contributed by Indiana residents and Indiana University affiliates.

The collection consists of articles, clippings, and interviews compiled during research for Seymour's book, Luther: The Life and Longing of Luther Vandross (2004), and subsequent research on topics related to R&B musicians, black music genres, the black gay community and gay musicians. Also included are audiocassettes containing interviews conducted by Seymour with Luther Vandross, various R&B musicians and record company personnel, as well as a large collection of mixtapes and commercial CDs.

The Cunningham mss., circa 1985-2008, consist primarily of manuscripts, drafts, correspondence, and other material by scholar and writer Rodger Cunningham, Professor of English at Alice Lloyd College in Kentucky.

The Cuthbertson mss., 1972-2001, consists of letters from author Emily Hahn, 1905-1997, to biographer Ken Cuthbertson, 1951- , of Ontario, Canada.

The Czech mss., ca. 1900-2010, consists of individual items by Czech writers, artists, etc., written in the Czech language and acquired from a variety of sources.

Danny Lee Burton (b. 1938) represented Indiana in the United States House of Representatives from 1983 to 2012. A member of the Republican Party, Dan Burton was elected to represent the 5th and 6th congressional districts of Indiana throughout his time in Congress. The collection consists of papers, audio-visual materials, and electronic records generated and received by the office of Congressman Dan Burton.

David G. Frey was a professor of zoology at Indiana University who specialized in limnology (aquatic ecology) and Cladocera (water flea). The collection consists of Frey's personal correspondence, reprints of most of his publications, as well as extensive research files encompassing his years as a limnologist.

David James was involved in the activist and music scenes in and around South Bend, Indiana, for most of the forty years that he lived in the community. A constant champion of civil rights, labor rights, and unions; a constant advocate for peace and protestor against war, David James spent much of his life actively fighting for the issues he believes in while performing and promoting the folk music he loved.

David Kaser was a professor in the School of Library and Information Science from 1973 to his retirement in 1991. This collection consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence, including letters to family and professional colleagues; date books listing Kaser's appointments, classes, and meetings; publications including copies of his books, journal articles, and reports, primarily dealing with the history of the development of American libraries, academic library administration, and the design and construction of library buildings; biographical and personal information which includes his resume, a list of his publications, and information on his consulting activities; and teaching records which includes VHS recordings of two courses which Kaser taught.

The David mss., circa 1996–2005, consists of the papers of professor Alfred David, 1929-2014.

David Reingold is the current Justin S. Morrill Dean of Liberal Arts and Professor of Sociology at Purdue University. This collection primarily focuses on his time working with the Corporation for National and Community Service as Director of Research and Policy Development where he was responsible for managing the agencies research and evaluation portfolio, providing consultation to the CEO on policy development, and working with the White House on the President's USA Freedom Corps initiative. This collection includes paper records as well as digital records.

The Davis, Nathaniel mss., ca. 1947-2010, consists of the papers of diplomat Nathaniel Davis, 1925-2011.

This collection consists of commercial gospel music videocassettes, commercial audio recordings, paper documents, schedules, promotional materials, photographs, and other ephemeral material related to Debbie May's career as a music producer.

The Deborah Smith Pollard collection includes more than 200 gospel music magazines and other publications from the 1980s to 2000s. The collection also includes Pollard's gospel music television specials, over 50 interviews she conducted with gospel artists and industry figures, airchecks of Pollard's radio program "Strong Inspirations" and radio programs hosted by other announcers.

The De Lange mss., 1970-2011, consists of the correspondence and translation manuscripts of Nicholas de Lange, translator of modern Hebrew literature.

A collection of recorded interviews and transcripts, photographs, press clippings, posters, and research materials related to Detroit techno music. The bulk of the collection materials span the years 2007-2011 and include audio and written interviews with notable Detroit techno artists such as Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, Mike Banks, Anthony Shakir. Also included are video footage from Movement Festival and photographs from Dalphond's dissertation research.

Denis Sinor was a faculty member of Indiana University in the Uralic and Altaic Program (now the Department of Central Eurasian Studies) from 1962 to 2011. Sinor founded the Department of Uralic and Altaic Studies in 1965 and the Asian Studies Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies (now the Sinor Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies [RIFIAS]), both of which he served as director for until his retirement from IU in 1986. He was active in many organizations during his tenure at Indiana University, most significantly the Journal of Asian History (JAH), Permanent International Altaistic Conference (PIAC), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and National Defense Education Act (NDEA). This collection consists of Sinor's correspondence with various organizations, IU, and personal contacts.

Records from the Department of Athletics, which oversees the intercollegiate athletics programs at IUPUI.

The Department of Communication Studies Records include correspondence, course syllabi, minutes, reports, release forms, and speech night planning documents. The records cover the department, its professors, and related programs between 1970 to 2015.

The Department of Geography Records include department newsletters from 1997-1998.

The Depréaux mss., circa 1940–2004, consists primarily of a diary written by Marie Louise (Brent) Depréaux in Paris during the German occupation.

The Devenyi mss. consists of the manuscripts, original illustrations, and other relevant materials, ca. 2002, for the miniature book "My Name is Leonard," published by Beaux Art Publishing under the direction of Mary and Paul Devenyi.

The Diamant, Alfred mss., 1917-2012, consists of the personal correspondence, emails, school records, military papers, birth and marriage certificates, and family trees of Alfred Diamant. It also includes various drafts and pre-publication copies of his and his wife's co-authored memoir Worlds Apart, Worlds United: A European-American Story.

The Diop mss., 1963-2017, consist of the notebooks, drafts, writings, correspondence, teaching materials, and born-digital materials of Senegalese author and journalist Boubacar Boris Diop, 1946- .

The Di Prima mss. II, 1980-2014, consists of the correspondence of American writer, poet, and editor, Diane Di Prima.

The Dollenmayer, David, mss., circa 2011-2013, consists of the typescripts and drafts of German-to-English translations by translator David Dollenmayer.

Donald E. Hattin served as a professor of geology at Indiana University from 1954 to 1995. His collection consists primarily of materials relating to his research, published works, and teaching files.

The Drolshagen mss., 2001-2002, consists of the correspondence, manuscript notes, corrected drafts, and line-edited manuscripts of Ebba D. Drolshagen's translation into German of Griefwork, by British author James Hamilton-Paterson.

The DuVal, John mss., ca. 1975-2016, consists of correspondence, notes, newspaper clippings, drafts, typescripts, poetry, and translations relating to the publications of John Tabb DuVal (1940- ), especially his translation of The Song of Roland. Also includes materials about John Duval and his daughter Kathleen Duval's "Interpreting a Continent: Voices from Colonial America" (2009), and includes texts translated from French and Spanish. Other parts of this collection in order of publication include Cuckolds, Clerics, and Countrymen: Medieval French Fabliaux (1982), From Adam to Adam: Seven Old French Plays (2005), and Fabliaux, Fair and Foul (2008).

The Dvořák/Thurber mss., ca. 1885–1937, consist of documents, correspondence, and ephemera relating to Antonín Dvořák, Jeanette M. Thurber, and the history of the National Conservatory of Music of America (NCMA). These materials were collected by Professor Robert Aborn, whose dissertation The Influence on American Musical Culture of Dvořák's Sojourn in America, may be read in its entirety at ScholarWorks.

The Eastman mss. II, 1869-1981, consist of the correspondence, writings, personal papers, and photographs of Max Eastman, 1883-1969.

The Eastman mss. IV, 1890-2009, consist of the photographs, correspondence, personal papers, writings, and artwork of Max Eastman, 1883-1969; Yvette Szekely Eastman, 1912-2014; and Eliena Krylenko Eastman, 1895-1956.

The Eastman mss. V, 1880-2009, consist of the photographs, correspondence, personal papers, writings, and legal documents of Max Eastman, 1883-1969; and Yvette Szekely Eastman, 1912-2014.

Echard mss., ca. 1903–1968, consist of the correspondence, newspaper clippings, articles, typescripts of mystery novels, short stories, plays, and scripts for stage and screen of writer Margaret Echard.

Eddie Gilreath was one of the first African American music industry professionals to hold executive level marketing and sales positions with major record labels including Motown, Warner Bros., Elektra Entertainment, Geffen, and MCA/Universal Distribution, promoting major artists across multiple genres. Included are personal papers and correspondence, marketing reports, press clippings, photographs, certified gold and platinum album plaques, clothing, and time-based media in both published and unpublished audio and video formats.

Includes the personal papers of Edith Casteleyn, founder and director of Dutch community gospel choirs in the Netherlands, as well as scrapbooks, recordings, videos, clippings, programs, publicity materials, and photographs documenting the Soesterberg Gospel Choir, Friendship Gospel Choir, Life Line Gospel Choir, Alive! Gospel Choir, Rainbow Gospel Singers, and other choirs directed by Casteleyn.

Edmund Battersby was an internationally renowned concert virtuoso pianist and professor at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. This collection contains materials from his professional career as a touring musician including: posters, programs, sheet music, and correspondence, the bulk of which stems from the 1970s to the 1990s.

The Edward and Naomi Feil collection, 1937-2011, consist of papers, scripts, correspondence, business records, production materials, ephemera, photographs, and films created by Edward and Naomi Feil. Contents are both of a personal nature as well as related to the business Edward Feil Productions and gerontological research of Naomi Feil.

Edward Grant, a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History and History and Philosophy of Science taught at Indiana University for over thirty years. This collection consists of 24.6 cubic of Edward Grant's papers. Consists of correspondence, research, drafts, publications, and course and lecture notes. By far the largest series in the collection is the Teaching series and includes materials from Grant's years teaching as a graduate student at the Univ. of Wisconsin and then later at Indiana. The bulk of the series, though, consists of folders relating to the courses he taught in the IU Dept. of History and Philosophy of Science. The Publications series contains information on many of Grant's publications, including his books Much ado about nothing and Source book in medieval science.

Consists of posters, advertisements, and photographs featuring African American actors and actresses, as well as videocassettes and DVDs.

Edward Najam arrived at IU in 1954 and remained as a professor of French until his retirement in 1987. Professor Najam took an early lead in advancing foreign language study nationwide in the early sixties and emerged as a leader in developing methods of teaching foreign languages. Najam's papers contain awards and diplomas, biographical information, correspondence, and publications.

​The Eichler mss., 1928-2002, consists primarily of letters between educator, journalist, and businessman David Kemble Eichler, 1913-2003, and actress Katharine Hepburn, 1907-2003.

This collection contains scientific articles pertaining to ichthyology, especially blind fish. Most of the articles were written by Carl Eigenmann, Rosa Smith Eigenmann, or both.
