Collections

The Union Board serves as the governing body for the Indiana Memorial Union, which organizes various events and activities for students on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. Established in 1909, the Union Board has since developed into the largest student programming body at Indiana University. The Collection consists of minutes of Union Board meetings and a variety of administrative documents and materials related to past programs, activities, and events.

The United Presbyterian Church mss., 1833-1933, consists of the records of the United Presbyterian Church of Bloomington, Indiana, and its predecessors, the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, the Associate Presbyterian Church and the Reformed Presbyterian Congregation.

This collection of interviews primarily covers U.S. foreign relations with Great Britain during World War II. While other countries, specifically the Soviet Union, are mentioned, most of the interviewees were in some way connected to Britain. Major topics include the openness in sharing information between the U.S. and Britain, Lend-Lease, and a discussion of various diplomats. Most interviewees complete their post-war history with a description of their duties in the locations they were later reassigned.

On July 15, 1942 Indiana University welcomed 200 Navy yeomen to campus to participate in the Naval Training School. In October of 1942 WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) arrived on campus for navy storekeepers training. By May 1944 the Naval Training School had trained 5008 Navy yeomen and storekeepers. The school would be closed one month later. This collection consists of manuals, syllabi, student information, naval school publications, administrative materials, and the correspondences of the education director of the Navy training school Elvin S. Eyster and Robert T. Ittner, assistant to President Herman B Wells.

The United World Federalists mss., 1928-1988, consists of correspondence and records relating to the United World Federalists' history, organization, policies, and programs.

The United World Federalists mss. II, 1954-1978 (bulk 1950s), consists of materials pertaining to the early United World Federalists movement.

The United World Federalists mss. III, 1989-2013, consist of copies of United World.

The United World Federalists mss. IV, 1927-2011, consists of books, pamphlets, and research related to the United Nations, the environment, and generalized politics, as well as copies of World Federalist Association annual reports, the World Federalist News magazine, and miscellaneous related awards and conferences materials.

The United World Federalists mss. V, 1947-1974, consists of materials from international conferences, various publications, and individuals associated with the organization, including Garry Davis and Charles Heywood.

The University Interests Committee, which had been organized in 1912, moved into action in the 1920s to lobby the state legislature for funds on behalf of Indiana University and to generate interest in the University among civic and community leaders throughout Indiana. Collection consists primarily of correspondence between University Interests Committee members, special representatives, county organizers, the university president, alumni, university supporters, and state legislators. Also contains questionnaires assessing support for the lobbying campaign and a few records of the Women's University Interest Committee.

The University School was a K-12 laboratory school that was founded in 1938 by Indiana University and the School City of Bloomington (later Monroe County Community School Corporation). This collection contains volumes of the Jordannus, a yearbook produced by the middle and high schools, dating from 1939-1979.

The Untermeyer mss., 1901-1970, consists chiefly of the correspondence of author Louis Untermeyer, 1885-1977.

The Uriarte mss., 1729-1790, consists primarily of the correspondence of Manuel Joaquín Uriarte, 1720-1802, and his diary of missionary life in the province of Mainas.

The Uruguay Mechanical and Electronic Engineering Education Program was sponsored by the Indiana University School of Education through a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The contract ran from 1964-1966 and focused on upgrading the mechanical and electronic engineering divisions of the Universidad Del Trabajo in Montevideo, Uruguay. This collection contains budget information, program reports, personnel files, and correspondence.

The Vernon mss., 1737-1740, consists of contemporary copies and extracts of the correspondence between Admiral Edward Vernon, 1684-1757, and the Great Britain Navy Board.

The Vezin mss., 1891-1902, consists of the writings of actor and playwright Hermann Vezin, 1829-1910.

The office of Undergraduate Development was instituted in 1959 by President Wells. The office of Undergraduate Development's responsibility is to encourage the development of the University's undergraduate program and to keep it in balance with the over-all growth of the institution. Collection consists of administrative records of the Vice President and Dean of Undergraduate Development in two series: Administrative files, 1958-1971, containing correspondence, memos, reports, and speeches; Student Affairs files, 1958-1970, containing correspondence, memos, reports, minutes, publications, and newspaper clippings pertaining to student activities on campus.

The Vidocq mss., 1833-1847, consists of the correspondence of French police officer Eugène François Vidocq, 1775-1857.

The Viereck mss., 1943-1953, consists of typescripts of letters from novelist Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968, to Peter Robert Edwin Viereck, 1916-2006, author and professor of history at Mount Holyoke College.

The Viking Press mss., 1940-1956, consists of the Viking Press office file of its correspondence with novelist Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968.

This project consists of interviews with Russian and Tatarian mothers of three different generations, those born before 1912, those born between 1912 and 1930, and those born after 1930. The interviewees talk about the change in norms and acceptance regarding motherhood due to wars and government changes. Topics discussed include motherhood, reproduction, infant and child mortality, courtship and marriage, fertility and abortion, prenatal care, maternity homes, maternity leave, and pediatric services. These interviews show how traditional practices blended with modern medical practices and ideas over the last one hundred years These interviews were used by David Ransel in his book Village Mothers "2000." The interviews have been transcribed in Russian with some English notes.

This collection consists of items from the library of Vincent Starrett, including publisher's advertisements, book reviews, announcements of Caxton Club meetings, and reproduction of an article.

Soprano Virginia MacWatters was known not only for her impressive operatic career during which she performed in opera houses throughout the United States, Europe, and South America, but also for her dedication to teaching. In 1957 she joined the voice faculty of the Indiana University School of Music where she remained until her retirement in 1982. She was awarded the prestigious Frederic Bachman Lieber Memorial Award for excellence in teaching in 1979. The collection consists of biographical materials, clippings, programs, teaching files, correspondence, photographs, and scrapbooks.

The Vishniak mss., 1921-1940, consists of the correspondence of former Russian Socialist leader and author Mark Veniaminovich Vishniak, 1883-1977.

Vivian B. Allen (VBA) Foundation was created in 1938 in New York State by Vivian Beaumont Allen with the stated purpose, "to promote the well-being of mankind in the United States of America and elsewhere in the world, including as a means to that end research, publication, the establishment and maintenance of charitable, benevolent, religious and educational activities, agencies and institutions already established." Upon Mrs. Allen's death in 1962, VBA Foundation began to liquidate itself and was dissolved in 1971. The records consist of correspondence between VBA Foundation and grant applicants, including notification of awards or rejections, and descriptions of projects under consideration for grants; and administrative records and correspondence of the Board of Directors, including Board meeting agenda and minutes, and Memoranda distributed to the Board Members. The collection contains records dating back to 1946.

The Vlček Mss., 1915-1937, consists of drawings, paintings, reproductions, and stamp designs of Czech artist Jindra Vlček, 1885-1968.

The Volková, Bronislava mss., 1983-2011, consists of typescripts, drafts, email correspondence and other material relating to poetry in Czech and English by Bronislava Volková, 1946- , Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Indiana University.

Volunteer Center at the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Fort Wayne - Allen County was the first RSVP group in Indiana and started on August 1st, 1972. It began with the Older Americans Act and was funded by the federal volunteer agency, Agency for Volunteer Service (ACTION). The group committed to provide individuals with opportunities for meaningful volunteer experiences that benefit the community. Their program included not only volunteer works such as helping school children, rolling bandages for the hospital burn units and having community events, but also educationals opportunities like a presentation by the Police Department about identification theft and social activities like field trips and picnics.

The Volwiler mss., 1898-1958, consists of material collected by historian Albert Tangeman Volwiler, 1888-1957, for a biography of Benjamin Harrison, president of the United States from 1889-1893.

The Von Tress mss., 1916-1993, consists of photocopies of manuscripts, pictures, records, letters, and published articles drawn from a memory book of Edward Campbell Von Tress, 1899-1976, an alumnus of Indiana University who helped head the university's Memorial Fund as Alumni Secretary.

The Vorontsov mss., 1764-1814, consists of the correspondence of several members of the Vorontsov family to their bankers in London.

The collection consists primarily of materials related to the gospel musicals Mama, I Want to Sing; Mama, I Want to Sing II; and Born to Sing! Mama 3. It includes scripts, programs, promotional materials, posters, photographs, videos, and sound recordings. Records of the Mama Foundation include programs, press clippings, publicity, and posters.

The Waddell mss., 1944-1987, consists of the World War II correspondence between geologist (Byron) Courtney Waddell, 1916-2003, and his fiancée and then wife, Australian-born Lola Yvonne Line, 1918-1998.

The collection consists primarily of audiocassette copies of the 26-part radio series Wade in the Water, produced by NPR in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, and concieved and hosted by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon.

Waldemar A. Nielsen (1917-2005) was widely recognized for his expertise in and analysis of charitable foundations. Nielsen worked in government and the nonprofit sector before establishing a consulting agency, Waldemar A. Nielsen, Incorporated, which focused on corporate social policy. Nielsen is best known for his writing on the biggest foundations within the American philanthropic world. Through publications like The Big Foundations (1972) and The Golden Donors (1985), Nielsen examined the foundations' methods and their effectiveness. The Waldemar A. Nielsen Papers consists of Nielsen's research, notes, and drafts for the books and articles published over the course of his career. The collection also contains correspondence, reports, and publications from Nielsen's time working for the government, the Ford Foundation, the African-American Institute, and from his years as a consultant.

The Walpole, H. mss., 1930-1933, consists of letters from novelist Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole, 1884-1941, to Louise Morgan Theis, 1883-1964.

The Walpole mss., 1715-1781, consists of the correspondence of Horatio Walpole, 1st Baron Walpole, 1678-1757, to his brother-in-law, Charles Townshend, 2nd viscount Townshend, 1674-1738.

The Walter J. Moore papers comprise 2.4 cubic feet and spans 1900-1995. There is no personal information on Dr. Moore in this collection, as it consists entirely of research files relating to Moore's two books on Erwin Schrödinger - Schrödinger, life and thought and Life of Erwin Schrödinger. The span dates of the collection include the dates of Schrödinger's publications, research, and correspondence collected by Moore. Moore was a Professor of Chemistry at Indiana University from 1952 to 1973.

Materials of composer, conductor, musicologist, and professor at Indiana University, Walter Kaufmann (1907-1984). Contains original manuscripts (scores and parts), as well as copies of manuscripts, working drafts and sketches, published editions, and reel-to-reel sound recordings of Kaufmann's compositions. Materials also include notes and drafts of lectures, articles, and books written by Kaufmann, as well as some of his published writings. Other materials include lecture papers by students, correspondence, concert programs and reviews, photographs, and monographs about the musics of Asia that were the subjects of much of his research.

Walter Q. Gresham, 1832-1895, was an Indiana lawyer. He also served as a brigadier general in the Civil War, a U.S. District Judge, a U.S. Circuit Court Judge, Postmaster-General, Secretary of the Treasury, and Secretary of State. This collection consists of correspondence from Gresham and about Gresham received by Indiana University from multiple sources, as well as some cards designed to display alongside Gresham's Civil War sword, which was donated to the university by Gresham's family in 1911.

Indiana University administrator Ward Gray Biddle's political career began in 1930 when he was elected to the Indiana state legislature as a Democratic representative from Monroe County, a position he held for the 1931 General Assembly session. In 1932 he was elected to the State Senate from Brown, Greene, and Monroe Counties and served for two more sessions of the General Assembly (1933 and 1935) and two special sessions (1932 and 1936). This collection consists of correspondence, maps, and voter information from Biddle's successful first campaign for the state senate seat from Brown, Greene, and Monroe Counties.

The War of 1812 mss., 1776-1879, consists of individual items acquired separately either as a gift or purchase from a variety of sources, relating to the War of 1812.

Warren d'Azevedo is a retired ethnographer, renowned for his work in anthropology and African studies. D'Azevedo began his research in the 1950s, focusing primarily on African cultures, including the Gola ethnic group of Liberia and the Native American Washoe culture of the Great Basin. This collection consists of d'Azevedo's writings, photographs, memorabilia, and U.S. and Liberian government documents and teaching materials.
