Collections

The Woodburn mss., 1795-1942, consist of letters and papers of four generations of the Woodburn family, James Woodburn, 1748-1812, farmer; Dorrance Beatty Woodburn, 1786- 1856, farmer and teacher; James Woodburn, 1817-1865, teacher; and James Albert Woodburn, 1856-1943, historian.

The Harrison Township, Knox County, Indiana mss., 1796- 1888, consists of records of Harrison Township and Knox County, Indiana.

The Williams, Samuel mss., 1796-1919, consist of letters and papers of Samuel Williams, 1786-1859, and his son, Samuel Wesley Williams, 1827-1928.

The Wilkins mss., 1797-1801, consist of official receipts to John Wilkins, 1761-1816, Quartermaster general of the U.S. Army, 1796-1812.

The Hall mss., 1797-1862, consists of the papers of Samuel Hall, 1797-1862, judge and member of the Board of Visitors of Indiana University.

The Kerlin mss., 1798-1925, consists of the papers of Mrs. Harriet Barton (Kerlin) Bentley, (Mrs. Frederick James Bentley), and members of three generations of her family.

The Lincoln mss., ca. 1798-1959, consist of letters, documents, and facsimile copies of documents by and about Abraham Lincoln, 1809-1865, his ancestors, immediate family, members of his cabinet, and other persons closely connected with him.

The Southey mss., 1799-1831, consist of the letters to and from Robert Southey, 1744-1843, poet.

The Porter mss., 1799-1850, are the papers of Sir Robert Ker Porter, 1777-1842, artist and diplomat, and his sister Jane Porter, 1776-1850, novelist.

The Fenn mss. consist of materials from the library of Bert R. Fenn of Tell City, Indiana, related to the Howard Shipyards and Dock Company of Jeffersonville, Indiana.

The Kingsborough mss., 1800-1899, consists of the working materials for Antiquities of Mexico, compiled by Edward King, Viscount Kingsborough, 1795-1837.

The Fess mss. consists of nineteen black and white undated photographs of paintings by artist Theodore Clement Steele, 1847-1926, and one of his studio in Brown County, Indiana. The photographs were made by Frank Michael Hohenberger, 1876-1963, also of Brown County, Indiana.

The Warren, V. mss., 1800-1910, consists of materials related to street cries in the United States and Europe.

The Marks mss., 1800-1953, consists of the notes, correspondence, pictures, maps, newspaper clippings, etc. assembled by Grace Sutherlin Marks, (Mrs. W. Oliver Marks), 1882-1953, of Salem, Indiana.

The Avery, Martha mss., 1800-1970, consist of Mongolian and Tibetan woodblocks and manuscripts collected by Martha Avery.

Translations mss., ca. 19th-21st centuries, consist primarily of manuscripts of literary translations, either from a foreign language into English or in some cases from English into another language. Also present are letters from authors to translators of their work or from the translators to the authors they translate.

The Rawson mss., 1801-1931, are papers of Mrs. Mary Ann (Read) Rawson, (Mrs. William B. Rawson), of Wincobank, near Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.

The Grimaldi mss., 1802-1840, consists of the extra illustrations for The Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi (1838), edited by Charles Dickens, 1812-1870.

The families represented in this collection are all family members or descendants of Theophilus Adam Wylie of Indiana University. Many of the earliest family members were closely associated with the university themselves. The collection includes legal documents, essays and biographical writings, financial records, business records, newspaper clippings, wedding invitations, academic records, journals, programs and drawings. The collection has been collated together from ephemera discovered amongst correspondence, books from the Theophilus Adam Wylie Library and papers held by Morton Bradley Jr.

The Starrett mss., 1927-1959, consist of the correspondence of author and journalist Vincent Starrett, 1886-1974, known for his biography The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and his detective stories.

The Taylor, R. mss., 1804-1848, are typescripts of letters and papers of the Taylor family of Mason County, Kentucky, copied by Myra Esarey, Bloomington, Indiana, on July 7, 1917, from the originals loaned for that purpose by Frances Taylor of Hillsboro, Indiana.

The Mauger mss., 1805-1807, consists of the writing books used by a student named Daniel Mauger.

The Latin American mss. Puerto Rico, 1805-1819, relate to the internal development and protection of the country.

The Latin American mss. --Honduras, 1805-1822, consists of individual items acquired separately either as a gift, purchase, transfer, or removal from a variety of sources, relating to Honduras. Additions continue to be made.

The Stevens mss. II, 1805-1911, consist of the correspondence of teacher and editor John Stevens, 1798-1877, and of members of his family.

The Wordsworth mss., 1805-1948 consist of primarily correspondence from William Wordsworth, 1770-1850, to family members, friends, and colleagues.

The Wordsworth mss. III, 1806-1956, consist of correspondence of William Wordsworth, 1770-1850, and of Mrs. Dorothy (Wordsworth) Dickson; a photograph of a chalk drawing of Wordsworth; and a photograph of Mrs. Dickson.

Consists of personal collection of Professor Carleton Hodge, including many 19th and 20th century Bibles and works about the Bible.

The Murray mss., 1806-1892, consist of letters of publishers John Murray II and John Murray III, of London, England, which are tipped in Samuel Smiles, Memoir and Correspondence of the Late John Murray. London, John Murray, 1891. (Lilly Z325 .M92 S6 vols. I & II). 1982

The individuals represented in this collection are primarily members of the Theophilus A. Wylie family, immediate and extended. However, there are many hundreds of letters written to the family by friends far and wide. The bulk of the collection dates from 1850 through 1930, roughly the lifespan of Louisa Wylie Boisen, daughter of Theophilus A. and Rebecca D. Wylie, who was largely responsible for preserving the letters. The entire body of correspondence was part of the bequest to Wylie House Museum from Morton C. Bradley, Jr., great-grandson of Theophilus A. Wylie.

The Moore, T. mss., 1807-1825, are the poems of Thomas Moore, 1779-1852, and one undated letter.

The Indiana University Folklore Archives was established in 1956 by Richard M. Dorson of the Indiana University Folklore Institute and grew to comprise 40,000 field collections gathered in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky, before closing in 1990. This collection contains the Folklore Archives' administrative files, special collections of prominent folklorists' research materials, reprints of journal articles, bibliographies, a collection of folksongs, and subject files and index cards on topics that include beliefs, customs, games, jokes, and legends.

Andrew Wylie assumed the position as the first president of Indiana College in 1829, and he died on 11 November 1851 of pneumonia which he developed after accidentally cutting his leg while chopping wood. This collection consists of Andrew Wylie's personal papers, and includes records documenting Wylie's tenure at Jefferson and Washington Colleges; correspondence with family and professional colleagues; Wylie's sermons, lectures, and writings; bills, contracts, and receipts relating primarily to building and maintaining the family residence; and biographical information on Wylie.

The Polke mss., 1809-1868, consist of letters and papers of William Polke, 1775-1843, judge, commissioner for the Michigan road, and perpetrator of the removal of the Potawatomi Indians from their homes and land in Indiana in 1838.

The Orr mss., 1809-1871, are the papers of the Orr family who emigrated from County Tyrone, Ireland, to Monroe County, West Virginia in 1821.

This collection consists of items honoring the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It includes over 250 funeral and memorial orations. Also includes likenesses, caricatures, and memorabilia of Lincoln and his contemporaries plus newspapers of the Civil War period.

This collection consists of commercial, agricultural, and medical materials belonging to William Adolphus Ashton (1803-1870), who tried to establish a co-operative community in Franklin County, Indiana in 1834.

The Jenkins mss., 1810-1902, consist of the journals and letter books of Francis Jenkins (1793-1866), Commissioner and later Agent for the East India Company in Assam, India, who was instrumental in the development of Assam's tea industry.

The Rappite mss., 1810-1939, consist of correspondence, music books, and other papers of the Harmony Society founded by George Rapp, 1757-1847.

The Howard Ship Yards & Dock Company mss., 1834-1942, are papers of the company of that name of Jeffersonville, Indiana, builders of steamboats, barges, towboats, etc. The papers in the collection consist of account books and other financial records, letters received, letter-copybooks, blueprints, drawings, and some photographs.

The Gt. Brit. Admiralty mss., 1811-1813, consists of contemporary copies and duplicates of orders and letters to Rear Admiral Robert Stopford, 1768-1847, and Rear Admiral Charles Tyler, 1760-1835, commanders-in-chief at the Cape of Good Hope.

The Kingsbury mss., 1811-1815, consists of the papers of general Jacob Kingsbury, 1755-1837, relating to the War of 1812.

The Boyd mss., 1811-1815, consists of the correspondence of American brigadier-general John Parker Boyd, 1764-1830.

The Maxwell mss., 1811-1852, consists of the papers of David Hervey Maxwell, 1786-1854, physician and trustee of Indiana University.

The Poe mss., 1811-1934, contain primarily correspondence written by Edgar Allan Poe to the poet Sarah Helen Whitman, 1803-1878.

The materials in The Svend Holsoe Collection: Edward James Roye Materials include research materials and manuscripts of Holsoe's work pertaining to Edward James Roye, Liberia's 5th president.

The Gt. Brit. Navy mss., 1812, consists of the logs for twelve ships of the British Navy destined for Newfoundland.

Collection consists of letters by Morgan Lewis to his wife, Mrs. Getrude (Livingston) Lewis.
