The Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies (RCLSS) was initially founded by Herman B Wells in 1955 as the Research Center for Anthropology, Folklore, and Linguistics; it was renamed the Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies in 1975. RCLSS evolved and grew rapidly under the direction of Thomas A. Sebeok, who served as Chairperson from 1956 through his retirement in 1991. The Center's primary functions included research, publishing, teaching, and the advancement of institutional connections in the interdisciplinary field of semiotics. This collection contains administrative records, student files, undergraduate and graduate curriculum development materials, committee reports and records, course files, and issues of the RCLSS in-house periodical Language Sciences.

The Lamb, H. mss., 1917-1919, consist primarily of letters, diaries, and photographs by and relating to Harley Lamb, 1895-1972, while serving in the American Expeditionary Force during World War I.

The Maugham mss., 1904-1973, consist of the contracts and correspondence about those contracts for works by William Somerset Maugham, 1874-1965, English novelist and playwright.

The Winston mss., ca. 1998 - 2011, consist of drafts of German literature translations by Krishna Winston, a professor in the German Studies Department at Wesleyan University.

The James, C.L.R. mss., ca. 1942-1974, consist of correspondence and writings of West Indian writer and political activist Cyril Lionel Robert James, 1901-1989.

The Krueger mss., 1988-1993, consist of translations from English into German of literary works by British authors Julian Barnes and William Boyd. The translator is Gertraude Krueger of Berlin and the translations were published by Haffmans Verlag in Zurich in the case of Barnes and by Rowohlt Verlag in Hamburg for Boyd.

The Lockhart, R. mss., 1906-1969, consist of the correspondence, writings and memorabilia of Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart, 1887-1970, diplomat and writer.

The Graves mss., 1914-1994, consist of correspondence and research materials collected by Richard Perceval Graves, 1945- , in preparation for writing his biography of Welsh author, Richard Arthur Warren Hughes, 1900-1976.

The Binkley, Raglind mss., ca. 1450-1842, consist of medieval fragments collected by Thomas and Raglind Binkley.

The Joris, Pierre mss., ca. 1960-2010, consist of the papers of the noted poet, translator and essayist, Pierre Joris, 1946-.

The Leiber, F. mss. II, ca. 1932-1970, consist of correspondence, writings, drawings, and photographs of science fiction writer Fritz Leiber, 1910-1992.

The Landers mss., ca. 1990s-2008, consist of the manuscripts and papers of Clifford E. Landers, Professor Emeritus of Political Science.

The Bruner Foundation was founded in 1963 using funds donated by Rudy and Martha Bruner. The foundation began with the purpose of aiding programs in health care and preventive medicine, and programs focused on Jewish concerns. Since the 1980s, the Bruner Foundation has broadened its purpose to include educational programs, evaluation of grant programs, and urban renovation. Today, the main activity of the foundation is the Rudy Bruner Award for Excellence in the Urban Environment, given every two years. The records consist mainly of the Bruner Foundation's activities since 1965. These documents include board minutes, grant records, educational programs, correspondence, conference proceedings, and the records of the Rudy Bruner Award for Excellence in the Urban Environment.

The Jay mss., 1864-2005, consist of approximately 325 spirit photographs and related correspondence and printed materials collected by magician Ricky Jay, 1946-2018.

The Jay mss. II, 1940s-2018, consist of the correspondence, research files, and manuscripts of magician Ricky Jay (1946-2018).

Theophilus A. Wylie was the cousin of Indiana University's first president Andrew Wylie and spent most of his adult life at IU, beginning in 1836,serving as its librarian, professor, vice president, and at one point, its interim president. Collection consists of Wylie's correspondence, diaries, sermons, drawings, and writings.

The English Department records span more than a century, from 1886 to 2012. The collection consists of correspondence between the acting chairman and English faculty members at IU and other institutions in the United States as well as students. The administrative files contain memos, correspondence with IU English faculty and regional campuses, reports pertaining to department committees, programs, courses, publications, other activities that concerned the development and growth of the Department. The publications files contain journals and other published material relating to Bloomington's English department.

Established as the Regional Economic Development Institute in 1984, the Indiana University Institute for Development Strategies is a university-wide program that focuses on research to promote economic development, and in particular the links between globalization, entrepreneurship, and the strategic management of regions to promote economic development. Directors of the Institute have included Charles Bonser, 1988-1997, and David Audretsch, appointed in 1998. Bonser also served as the first endowed Chair of the Ameritech Fellowship Program, which was established with a grant from the Ameritech Foundation. Research projects funded by this grant targeted major issues related to the new and emerging economies of mature economic regions with emphasis placed on the American Midwest. This collection consists of correspondence, research proposals and reports, publications, annual reports, working papers, committee files, conference and workshop information, and project records. Prominent in the collection is the Director's correspondence series, organized into two sub-series by incumbent, and records relating to the research projects funded by the Institute. The collection also includes files related to the establishment of the Institute, located in the Administration series.

The Department of French and Italian at Indiana University was established in 1934, when the Department of Romantic Languages split into French and Italian and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. This collection covers the period 1935-2015 and consists of administrative files, such as annual reports, minutes, and newsletters, as well as faculty files that include articles, newspaper clippings, curricula vitae, correspondence, and other material.

Roger Wilkinson was an Indiana University professor of physics from 1946-1968. Collection consists of correspondence, publications, lecture notes, and laboratory reports. The lecture notes included in the collection are from both Wilkinson's tenure as a professor as well as notes he took as a student at the University of Chicago. The Publication series consists of reprints of articles authored or co-authored by Wilkinson, 1951-1968.

The Indiana University Office of Publications is one of the oldest non-academic offices on campus. Its records date primarily from the tenure of Ivy Leone Chamness, who served as Head Editor of University Publications from 1917-1952. Collection includes correspondence, manuscripts, and newspaper clippings. Prominent in the collection are edited manuscripts of the two volume History of Indiana University written by Burton Dorr Myers and James A. Woodburn.

James H. Rudy was an Indiana University alumnus who was granted an AB in English in 1932. In his will Rudy left the bulk of his estate to Indiana University, which was used to begin and fund the Rudy Professorships to attract and retain outstanding faculty. Collection consists of papers brought together after Rudy's death by the Owensboro, Kentucky law firm Wilson and Wilson, who represented Rudy's friends and lawyer when his sister, Sarah Gray Rudy McNulty, contested his will. Collection includes notes, correspondence, journals and ledgers, depositions, and legal papers. The depositions include Rudy's family and friends in addition to Indiana University Vice President and Treasurer Joseph A. Franklin. Prominent correspondents include Rudy's mother-in-law Grace Blair, his mother Katherine F. Rudy, his sister Sarah McNulty, and family friends Linda and Charles Boswell.

Ivy Chamness was a teacher, editor and a writer, and was actively involved on many committees. Her papers demonstrate that her life revolved around education through copies of her editorials, her personal correspondence, minutes from various committees upon which she served, journals from her travels, and various documents relating to her work here at IU pre and post-retirement.

Robert d'Escourt Atkinson, astronomer, physicist, and inventor, was known around the world for his work in general physics, atomic synthesis and stellar energy, precision astrometry and fundamental astronomy, instrumentation, and relativity. Consists of personal papers, research notes, published papers, and class and lecture notes of Robert d'E. Atkinson in seven series: Pre-IU, 1918-1978, containing papers and correspondence from his college days, World War II, and from his time at the Royal Observatory in England. A great deal of the Royal Observatory records are about the Observatory's move to Hurstmonceux, which Atkinson oversaw. Conferences and Meetings, 1958-1987, containing pamphlets and notes on conferences he attended; Correspondence, 1926-1981, containing personal correspondence with friends and colleagues. Prominently feature are famed astronomer and astrophysicist Henry Norris Russell and correspondence about Herman B Wells Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Publications and Papers, 1893-1980, consists both of Atkinson's papers and papers of others he chose to save; Subject files, 1924-1981, consists of notes, correspondence, and publications on relativity, Mirror Transit Circles, astrometry, and miscellaneous files; Indiana University, 1964-1981, made up of notes and correspondence from his time as a visiting professor at IU; Visual Materials, 1948-1979 containing photographs, glass and plastic slides, charts, microfiche, and a short home film.

Barbara Shalucha founded the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center in Bloomington, Ind. in 1948 and served as its director until 1986. Shalucha first came to Indiana University as an instructor in the Botany Department. She was hired for her special perspective on applied botany which incorporated youth involvement. The Barbara Shalucha papers comprise 7 cubic feet and span 1935-1992. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, publications, subject files, and teaching materials.

Established in Bloomington, Indiana, as the Bloomington Bible Chair by the Disciples of Christ in 1910; the name changed to the Indiana School of Religion in 1917. The mission of the School was to provide Biblical and religious education to, and to promote the religious education of, students who attended Indiana University. Collection consists of correspondence, minutes of the Board of Directors, financial records, publications, essays, pamphlets, and posters.

David Starr Jordan joined the IU faculty in 1879 as a professor of natural history. In 1885 at the age of 34, Jordan was appointed President of Indiana University. He served in that position until 1891 when he left IU to become the first president of the newly established Stanford University. The records of his presidency consist primarily of administrative files alphabetically arranged. The records also contain a few of Jordan's writings and addresses.

Records dating from the tenure of Indiana University President John Coulter. Organized into two series, the collection primarily consists of incoming correspondence during Coulter's tenure.

Contains annual, periodic, and summary reports of admissions, 1938-1971, and some additional material of a statistical and general nature.

The work of the Admissions Committee was to consider and recommend admissions policies, pre-college guidance procedures, and to act as a Board of Appeals. Consists of minutes of committee meetings, correspondence, notes, and administrative subject files of the chairman of the Admissions Committee, William H. Strain.

The University Interests Committee, which had been organized in 1912, moved into action in the 1920s to lobby the state legislature for funds on behalf of Indiana University and to generate interest in the University among civic and community leaders throughout Indiana. Collection consists primarily of correspondence between University Interests Committee members, special representatives, county organizers, the university president, alumni, university supporters, and state legislators. Also contains questionnaires assessing support for the lobbying campaign and a few records of the Women's University Interest Committee.

Lemuel Moss was Indiana University President 1875-1884. He left amidst a scandal involving himself and a female professor at the university. This small collection consists of correspondence with Rev. and Mrs. J. R. Scott and a poem Moss wrote for his wife in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary.

Ora L. Wildermuth was an Indiana University alumnus and trustee; a lawyer and judge; and a library trustee in both Indiana and Florida. He was also one of the first residents of Gary, Indiana. The papers of Judge Ora L. Wildermuth includes correspondence, diaries, speeches, lectures, and both published and unpublished writings. A great deal of genealogy information can be found in the Wildermuth Family Association series.

The Board of Aeons was established on March 29, 1921 to function as a link between the student body and the administration. It is composed of 8 to 12 students of at least junior standing and meets regularly but informally once or twice a week with the President, Vice-President, Chancellor or other administrative officials. The Board of Aeons records include minutes, agendas, reports, correspondence, and officers' notebooks.

Established in 1902, the Panhellenic Association is the coordinating student organization for sororities at Indiana University. Collection consists of correspondence, publications, agendas, budget information, and scrapbooks.

The Regional Campus Coordinating Committee was established in 1966. It was composed of two administrative officers and one faculty member from both Indiana and Purdue Universities and was responsible for reviewing all regional campus program proposals and passing on its recommendations to the Trustees Joint Policy Council. Collection consists of meeting minutes, correspondence, proposals, reports, and research files.

The Alpha Chapter of the Latina-oriented sorority Gamma Phi Omega was founded in 1991 and was recognized as an official sorority at Indiana University in 1992. The National Board of Directors for the group was established in 1995 with the headquarters located at IU, though they have since relocated to Chicago, Ill. Collection includes records from both the Alpha Chapter and National Board of Directors of Gamma Phi Omega and consists of agendas, minutes, correspondence, membership lists, and constitutions.

On July 15, 1942 Indiana University welcomed 200 Navy yeomen to campus to participate in the Naval Training School. In October of 1942 WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) arrived on campus for navy storekeepers training. By May 1944 the Naval Training School had trained 5008 Navy yeomen and storekeepers. The school would be closed one month later. This collection consists of manuals, syllabi, student information, naval school publications, administrative materials, and the correspondences of the education director of the Navy training school Elvin S. Eyster and Robert T. Ittner, assistant to President Herman B Wells.

One of the two chief literary societies on campus, the Athenian Society was founded at Indiana University in 1830. Literary societies gave students practice in speaking and writing through regular orations, essays, and debates, as well as filling a social role. Collection consists of minutes, correspondence, publications, addresses, and announcements. The Publication series includes copies of the Athenian, a monthly periodical of writings submitted by members of the Athenian Society that were of "a high literary character," including what the editors considered "chaste and elevated literature." These span December 1845 through November 1846. Most prominent in the collection are the minutes from the weekly meeting of the Society.

The University Provost position was created by William Lowe Bryan in 1923 in order to delegate management of the Indianapolis campus to another administrator. Samuel E. Smith held this position until his death in 1928. Collection consists of records of the University Provost in two series: Correspondence and Subject files. The Correspondence series is further organized in three subseries: General, State field nursing, and Construction. The Subject files series contains inventories, records, and reports from a variety of sources. The subject of medicine is most prominent and a good number of the records are about Riley Hospital for Children. Copies of several House Bills can also be found here.

Pi Lambda Theta was founded in 1910 as an honor and professional association for women in education. In 1920, the Iota chapter was chartered at Indiana University. In 1974, the organization began admitting men. Collection consists of minutes, a ledger book, constitutions, membership information, publications, and scrapbooks.

Charles Hyneman was a Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Indiana University. Collection contains biographical materials, copies of articles, manuscripts, research notes, lectures, teaching materials, papers and reports relating to his work for the federal government during World War II, and general correspondence. Includes manuscript copies of American founding experience (published in 1994), Government and politics in the United States (not published), and some chapters of an unfinished book to have been co-authored by Hubert H. Humphrey on the American political system. Correspondents include Hubert H. Humphrey, Sander Vanocur, and Herman B Wells.

The Office of Military Information was created 1 July 1942 at Indiana University to advise students, parents, faculty members and the general public about war service opportunities and regulations. Collection consists of subject files arranged alphabetically and spans the years 1942-1946. The collection includes correspondence with military and university personnel, directives from Washington, D.C. and regional military offices, and information on housing, courses, and instructors.

Consists of the records of the Intensive Language Training Center in two series: Administrative files and Programs. The Administrative files series consists of files accumulated by the administration of the center from 1959-1972. It is further organized in two subseries, Correspondence and General information. The Programs series contains records detailing the various programs in which the ILTC was involved. The bulk of the records come from the tenure of Carleton T. Hodge, who took the place of Orrin Frink as Director of the ILTC in 1964. There are a small number of records dating from the period after the ILTC program was disbanded and some of its functions taken on by the Research Center for the Language Sciences.

A student guidance program was established at Indiana University in the fall of 1939 to help incoming students adjust to college life. Herman T. Briscoe served as the director of the department during its short existence, as in 1942 the program and its responsibilities were replaced by the Junior Division. Collection consists of correspondence, budget files, reports, and the director's committee files. Prominent in the collection are lists of faculty advisors and correspondence regarding the advisory services.

Martha Jeannette Vicinus was a faculty member of the Indiana University English Department from 1968-1982. Her papers comprise 1 cubic foot and span the period of 1971-1980. Consists largely of newsletters, flyers, pamphlets, minutes, form letters, mass mailings, interdepartmental memos, and a small amount of personal correspondence relating to the activities of American Federation of Teachers Bloomington local, women's movement in Bloomington, the creation of Women's Studies program at Indiana University, and the Modern Language Association Radical Caucus. Items are arranged chronologically within each series.

The Central Scholarship Committee was a general committee for evaluating applications for scholarships and student aid. The collection comprises .4 cubic feet spanning 1939-1940. Contains correspondence with members of the committee, legal counsel, and members of similar student aid committees at the university concerning policy and decision-making; letters of inquiry from students and parents about scholarships and loans; lists of candidates for and recipients of student aid and some analytical reports.

Dr. John W. Ryan was the fourteenth president of Indiana University, serving from 1971 until 1987. This collection is comprised of his speeches.

Consists of speeches given by Elvis J. Stahr during his term as President of Indiana University.

Founded in 1948, the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center was designed to promote community gardening at Indiana University. From the beginning, Hilltop was jointly sponsored by IU, the city of Bloomington's Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Bloomington Garden Club. Collection includes correspondence, photographs, architectural drawings, scrapbooks, minutes, reports, and publications and records relating to the Hilltop Educational Foundation and Hilltop Garden Council.

W. Carl Jackson served as Dean of Libraries at Indiana University, Bloomington from 1973 to 1980. Over the course of his career, Jackson served in a variety of library roles and was in involved in several library professional organizations. This collection includes correspondence, lecture notes, committee records, subject files, and other papers from Jackson's almost thirty years working in the library profession.

Sarah Parke Morrison became the first woman admitted to Indiana University in 1867. Collection consists of personal papers of Sarah Parke Morrison in three series: Correspondence, 1897-1913, consisting primarily of outgoing correspondence. Frequent correspondents include former Indiana University President William Lowe Bryan and Registrar John W. Cravens. The correspondence all dates from the years after she left IU and much of it discusses her desire that women become members of the various University boards. Schedules, 1855-1856, consists of a single schedule of a typical day for Morrison at the Western Female College; and Writings, 1911-1912, includes a handwritten account of Morrison's entrance and experience as the first female student at IU and a small pamphlet of Morrison's poetry published in 1912.

Contains administrative files, correspondence, budgets, schedules, programs, and newspaper clippings. The majority of the materials are the records of Eugene K. Bristow who served as director of the program. Additional records come from R. Keith Michael who became the Head of the Department of Theatre and Drama in 1971 which oversaw the Theatre Division of the High School Institute.

Henry Thew Stephenson joined the faculty of the English Department at Indiana University in 1895 where he remained until his retirement in 1940. The Henry Thew Stephenson papers consist of the manuscript of Stephenson's unpublished "What Tree is That?"

Herman B Wells served as President of Indiana University 1938-1962. Consists of speeches given by Herman B Wells during his term as President of Indiana University, including 1937, when he served as interim President.

John Robert Moore was an English professor at Indiana University from 1922 to 1961. This collection consists of Moore's correspondence, newspaper clippings, and reprints.

The office of the Dean of Students at Indiana University was created in 1945. The records span the period 1941-2000 and include annual reports, administrative and subject files primarily from the tenure of Dean Thomas Schreck.

Herrick B. Young was an Indiana University alumnus, 1925. After leaving IU, Young continued his schooling elsewhere and became an English and literature professor at Alborz College in Tehran, Iran. He later became President of the Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio, 1954-1969, and served as President of the Near East Foundation, 1972-1976. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and the Royal Central Asian Society, and held two honorary doctorates. This collection contains memoirs of Young's travels and scrapbooks and articles written by Young between the 1920s and 1980s. The collection also contains lectures, notes, correspondence, and Young's book, Strange lands and wonderful people.

The "Big Ten" Intercollegiate Faculty Athletics Committee was formed on January 11, 1895. Indiana University became a member of the Committee in 1899. The general purpose of the Committee was to exert more faculty control over athletics. The records of the Athletics Committee comprise 2.6 cubic feet and span 1940-1964. The majority of the records date to John F. Mee's tenure as chairman, 1951-1962, but there are also records from William R. Breneman's tenure, 1943-1951.

The Indiana University Audio-Visual Center (IU-AVC) was a service of the Indiana University Extension Division that produced, collected and distributed educational films and videos to institutions and organizations throughout the United States. The films, videos and all paper documentation that made up this century old film distribution unit of Indiana University was transferred to the IU Libraries in the early 2000's. As part of what is now the core holdings of the IU Libraries Moving Image Archive, in addition to the films and videos that made up the early years of the Archive, the paper teacher's guides that correspond to instructional films and videos spanning the late 1920's into the early 2000's are an important historical record of this history.

The Indiana University Extension Division was established in 1912. In 1946, it became part of the Division of Adult Education and Public Services and in 1957, it became the Division of University Extension. Collection consists of correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, and memoranda.

Collection consists of 3 cubic feet of records created by Charles F. Voegelin and Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin for their Great Lakes - Ohio Valley Ethnohistorical Research Project. Prominently featured in the collection are correspondence and reports prepared for the U.S. Dept. of Justice.

With the retirement of the Indiana University Bursar in 1936, the Board of Trustees created the new administrative position of University Comptroller to manage the university's financial operation. As the university's business manager, the Comptroller had a number of duties including preparation and control of the budget, handling of student loan funds, collection of gifts and bequests and general charge of the physical plant. Ward Gray Biddle served as the first and only Comptroller because in 1942 the university underwent a reorganization and the Comptroller's duties were assumed by other positions. The collection consists of 2 cubic feet of University Comptroller records spanning 1935-1942.

Daniel Kirkwood was an astronomer and professor of mathematics at Indiana University almost continuously from 1856 until 1886. Collection consists of papers of Daniel Kirkwood in two series: Correspondence and Publications. Correspondence, 1864-1895, consists of both incoming and outgoing correspondence. Some noted correspondents are Cyrus Nutt, president of Indiana University 1860-1875, Joseph Swain, IU president, 1893-1902, astronomer Sherburne W. Burnham, and Arthur C. Mellette, governor of the Dakota Territory from 1861-1889. The Publications series, 1864-1891, consists of articles written by Kirkwood. Several of the publications are photocopies of the originals.

Judge David D. Banta was an instructor in the School of Law at Indiana University as well as an officer of the Indiana University Board of Trustees. This collection consists of three series and is largely comprised of manuscripts of Banta's history of Indiana University.

The original Indiana University History Club was chartered in 1902 with various name changes and grouping changes in the years leading up to 1958. The intent of the clubs was to promote historical research, method of historical study and teaching interests. This collection includes constitutions, meeting minutes and officer books of the Indiana University History Club, the Graduate History Club, and the Logan Esarey Graduate History Club. The collection includes records of two distinct organizations due to the fact that the records were bound together in a series of journal style notebooks.

The papers of Schuyler Colfax Davisson, Indiana University alumnus and Mathematics Professor, span the years 1900-1936 and are organized into two series: Professional Papers and Publications & Manuscripts. The Professional papers series consists of biographical information, correspondence, and examinations. The Publications & Manuscripts series includes manuscripts and publications, including copies of his book College algebra.

The Polish Studies Center was established at Indiana University on October 30, 1977. The purpose of the Center was to promote activities such as lectures, discussions, academic courses, and an exchange program with Warsaw University that would increase the knowledge and cultural awareness of Poland and Eastern Europe, while bringing the areas closer together. The collection consists of a wide-variety of information pertaining to the various programs, events, lectures, and conferences formed by the Polish Studies Center, along with administrative materials that show the growth and development of the center.

Arthur Reed Hogue was an Indiana University professor of history, 1950-1974. His papers consists of correspondence, research materials, publications, committee files, speeches, and course materials. Prominent in the collection are Hogue's files related to a book he edited entitled Charles Sumner, an Essay by Carl Schurz as well as Hogue's Origins of the Common Law.

The Latino Cultural Center was established at Indiana University in 1973. It is more affectionately known as La Casa. Its purpose was, and continues to be, to achieve through educational and social programs, a greater historical, political and cultural awareness regarding the latine community. The collection consists of records created by the Latino Cultural Center while under the direction of the Office of Latino Affairs, documents from student organizations, such as Latinos Unidos at Indiana University (LUIU), and other documents realted to the history and interests of the Latino Cultural Center including correspondence, publications, events, annual reports, and subject files.

Formed in 1977, the Indiana Religious Studies Project (IRSP) brought Indiana secondary teachers to Indiana University to improve how the study of religion was taught in high schools. The collection consists of participant information (applications, course projects, correspondence), sample lesson plans, and a variety of records that pertain to the growth, successes, and shortcomings of the project over its seven year existence. The project's funding ended in 1984.

This collection contains the records of the High School Journalism Institute from 1947-2003. The Institute was formed to provide secondary students with the opportunity to learn about journalism by offering workshops in newspaper and yearbook publication. There are eight series in this collection: Scholarship and award files; Subject files; Administrative files; Faculty files; Newspaper files; Publications; Scrapbook files; and Photographs.

This collection contains the personal papers of Marshal H. Wrubel, Professor of Astronomy at Indiana University. Professor Wrubel was affiliated with the University from 1950 until his death in 1968, and contributed papers to leading scientific publications on various topics such as stellar interiors, stellar atmospheres, and hydromagnetics. This collection houses Wrubel's papers, including correspondence, files on service activities, and research notes. The collection spans 1950 to 1969, although many of his research notes are undated.

A department within the IU School of Education, the mission of the Language Education Dept. is to teach current and future teachers how to teach and research in the areas of English education, foreign and second language education, and literacy/reading education through its graduate and undergraduate programs. The department evolved from a Dept. of Reading Instruction within the School of Education's Division of Curriculum and Instruction. Collection consists of correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, and agendas for the Language Education Department at Indiana University.

In July of 1949, the Inter-Institutional Study Committee, also known as the Four State Schools Committee, was created in response to a new law passed by the Indiana Legislation requesting that the four state schools submit a formula by which the state funds would be divided amongst the institutions. The committee was comprised of representatives from Indiana University, Purdue University, Ball State Teachers College, and Indiana State Teachers College. The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, preliminary studies, raw data, and five bound reports.

William Lowe Bryan was an Indiana University alumnus, professor, and president. This collection includes correspondence, genealogical information, notes, a single journal from 1886, and published and unpublished writings and speeches. Correspondents include family and friends as well as numerous well-known political figures such as Winston Churchill, U.S. Senator Homer Capehart and Eleanor Roosevelt. Frequent correspondents include brother Enoch Albert Bryan, Frank and Sara S. Elliott, Evangeline Lewis, Ruth McNutt, and Herman B Wells.

Indiana University alumnus, professor and administrator. A well-known ichthyologist, Carl H. Eigenmann earned his BS, MA and PhD at Indiana University. Eigenmann taught in the Dept. of Zoology for over 40 years, served as Dean of the Graduate School when it was first established in 1908 until his death, and was founder and director of the Indiana University Biological Station in northern Indiana. Collection consists of personal papers, correspondence, and writings of Eigenmann in six series.

Lemuel Moss served as president of Indiana University from 1875-1884. This collection consists of records from his tenure and is organized into a single series, Administrative files.

The Walter J. Moore papers comprise 2.4 cubic feet and spans 1900-1995. There is no personal information on Dr. Moore in this collection, as it consists entirely of research files relating to Moore's two books on Erwin Schrödinger - Schrödinger, life and thought and Life of Erwin Schrödinger. The span dates of the collection include the dates of Schrödinger's publications, research, and correspondence collected by Moore. Moore was a Professor of Chemistry at Indiana University from 1952 to 1973.

The Showboat Majestic was a riverboat used for performances by the theater departments at both Hiram College and Indiana University. Collection consists of records from the Showboat Majestic spanning 1948-1973. Included in the collection are newspaper clippings, correspondence, information about the proposed Showboat II, artifacts, and several administrative files consisting of records on billing and attendance, performances, and maintenance costs.

The Oliver P. Field papers comprise 1 cubic foot spanning 1936-1953. The collection consists of manuscript drafts and research materials related to Field's unpublished work on the history of Indiana University during World War II. Field began gathering information for this manuscript during the war and began writing shortly afterward. Editing was in progress when Field died in 1953. There was not a clear consensus on how to handle the publication so the publisher dropped the work.

Henry William Hofstetter was a professor of optometry from 1952 until his retirement in 1980. He served as director of the Division of Optometry 1952-1970. Collection consists publications, personal and professional correspondence, records regarding Prof. Hofstetter's community and professional service, and files related to his research.

Though history courses were taught at Indiana University as early as the 1820s, a formal department did not exist until 1895, when the Department of History and Political Science was established. In 1914, the Department of History was made an autonomous University unit. The records in this collection date primarily from Leo F. Solt's tenure as Chair of the Department of History and include a range administrative materials, correspondence, and various documents in relation to Department initiatives, coursework, degree programs, and faculty.

Founded in 1972, the Program for Advanced Studies in Institution Building and Technical Assistance Methodology (PASITAM) was supported by a grant by the Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities (MUCIA) and represented Indiana University's major contribution to that program. PASITAM's mission was to to acquire, develop, and disseminate information about project design and implementation. Collection is organized in three series: Project, containing files maintained for use in developing their training materials and newsletters; Analytical Skills Workshop, containing files pertaining to PASITAM's major project which produced a series of training modules; and Reports, consisting of PASITAM's annual reports.

The origins of the University Faculty Council can be traced back to a University reorganization begun by university president Elvis J. Stahr. In 1969 the University Faculty began a council for policy and academic decisions for the broader multi-campus University system, as the Bloomington Faculty Council became a legislative body for the faculty on the Bloomington Campus. This collection consists of the agendas, minutes, circulars and supporting documents of the University Faculty Council, the governing body of the university faculty throughout the Indiana University system.

The International Development Research Center was founded in November 1962. The name was changed to the International Development Institute in 1974 when its mission shifted to focus on encouraging communication and information exchange. IDRC/IDI worked to coordinate and promote cross-cultural studies, to promote and develop plans for exploiting IU's strength in foreign language training, and to work for effective use of IU's membership in the American Universities Field Staff. Collection consists correspondence, annual reports, and publications of the IDRC/IDI. The majority of the records date from William J. Siffin's directorship.

David Kaser was a professor in the School of Library and Information Science from 1973 to his retirement in 1991. This collection consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence, including letters to family and professional colleagues; date books listing Kaser's appointments, classes, and meetings; publications including copies of his books, journal articles, and reports, primarily dealing with the history of the development of American libraries, academic library administration, and the design and construction of library buildings; biographical and personal information which includes his resume, a list of his publications, and information on his consulting activities; and teaching records which includes VHS recordings of two courses which Kaser taught.

Collection consists of records generated between 1954 and 1993 by University Computing Services. The Research Computing Center was established in 1954 and evolved into the Marshal H. Wrubel Center in 1973 and after 1981 University Computing Services. The collection is organized in three series. The Director's correspondence series consists almost entirely of outgoing correspondence from the director's office, arranged chronologically. Directors represented in the collection include the Center's first directors, Lynne Merritt and Marshal H. Wrubel as well as subsequent directors. The Minutes series, arranged chronologically, consists of minutes of the senior staff meetings and the final series, Reports, contains UCS's annual reports from 1958-59 through 1992-93. Also included in the series are the proceedings of an annual conference on instructional and academic computer applications which UCS helped organize, reports from the Research Computing Center Committee, reports submitted to the National Science Foundation in support of grant applications, and study reports on instructional computing. The series is arranged alphabetically.

The Faculty Seminar on Political and Administrative Development was established by the Dept. of Government (now Political Science), in 1962. Originally funded by a grant from Carnegie Corporation, it became better known as the Carnegie Seminar. Consists of correspondence, memos, meeting minutes, proposals, and annual reports.

Indiana University joined the National Association of University Dames on 11 May 1931. Collection consists of 1.2 cubic ft. of the University Dames Club records organized in six series - Officers and members, Publications, Activities and informational, Certificates and awards, Publicity, and Budget.

This collection consists of records created by Denis Sinor during his tenure as Chairman of the Department of Uralic and Altaic Studies at Indiana University Bloomington and spans the years 1964-1988. The collection includes correspondence, reports, memoranda, and applications, the bulk of which relate to federal funding for the Department of Uralic and Altaic Studies and associated programs and research travel awards for graduate students.

A system-wide administrative office, the Office of State Relations (OSR) monitors and reacts to state government activities that influence operations at Indiana University. Collection consists of one cubic foot of records created and/or saved by Malcolm M. Webb during his tenure as Assistant Director of the Office of State Relations. Within the folders researchers can find correspondence, faxes, memos, and reports sent and received by Webb. The most prominent subject of the collection, consisting of 11 folders, deal with the early development of the Theatre/Neal-Marshall Center.

Donald F. Carmony was an Indiana historian; member of the Indiana University faculty, 1939-1980; Director of the IU South Bend Extension Center, 1944-1950; Associate Dean of the IU Extension Division, 1950-1959; and editor of the Indiana Magazine of History, 1955-1975. His collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, and other materials relating to History Department of Indiana University; university committees; professional, state, and local organizations, notably the American Association of State and Local History, Bloomington-Monroe County Bicentennial Commission, and New Harmony Plan Commission; and general correspondence with faculty, administrators, and the public, much of which deals with historic preservation issues. Does not include research notes or teaching materials.

The Indiana University Folklore Institute is an active center of folklore scholarship and has a long history of collecting oral literature and arts. This collection consists of papers written on a variety of topics by students taking courses in the Folklore Institute. These papers are dated roughly between 1967 through the early 2010s.

This collection contains the records of the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunications Service (IHETS) and its related entities. IHETS arose from the passage of the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunications Act by the Indiana General Assembly on March 11, 1967. The service oversaw statewide telecommunications systems connecting university campuses and partner institutions, including voice, video, and data networks.
