The Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies (RCLSS) was initially founded by Herman B Wells in 1955 as the Research Center for Anthropology, Folklore, and Linguistics; it was renamed the Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies in 1975. RCLSS evolved and grew rapidly under the direction of Thomas A. Sebeok, who served as Chairperson from 1956 through his retirement in 1991. The Center's primary functions included research, publishing, teaching, and the advancement of institutional connections in the interdisciplinary field of semiotics. This collection contains administrative records, student files, undergraduate and graduate curriculum development materials, committee reports and records, course files, and issues of the RCLSS in-house periodical Language Sciences.

The Lamb, H. mss., 1917-1919, consist primarily of letters, diaries, and photographs by and relating to Harley Lamb, 1895-1972, while serving in the American Expeditionary Force during World War I.

The Maugham mss., 1904-1973, consist of the contracts and correspondence about those contracts for works by William Somerset Maugham, 1874-1965, English novelist and playwright.

The Winston mss., ca. 1998 - 2011, consist of drafts of German literature translations by Krishna Winston, a professor in the German Studies Department at Wesleyan University.

The James, C.L.R. mss., ca. 1942-1974, consist of correspondence and writings of West Indian writer and political activist Cyril Lionel Robert James, 1901-1989.

The Krueger mss., 1988-1993, consist of translations from English into German of literary works by British authors Julian Barnes and William Boyd. The translator is Gertraude Krueger of Berlin and the translations were published by Haffmans Verlag in Zurich in the case of Barnes and by Rowohlt Verlag in Hamburg for Boyd.

The Lockhart, R. mss., 1906-1969, consist of the correspondence, writings and memorabilia of Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart, 1887-1970, diplomat and writer.

The Graves mss., 1914-1994, consist of correspondence and research materials collected by Richard Perceval Graves, 1945- , in preparation for writing his biography of Welsh author, Richard Arthur Warren Hughes, 1900-1976.

The Binkley, Raglind mss., ca. 1450-1842, consist of medieval fragments collected by Thomas and Raglind Binkley.

The Joris, Pierre mss., ca. 1960-2010, consist of the papers of the noted poet, translator and essayist, Pierre Joris, 1946-.

The Latin American mss. Mexico III, 1563-1855, consist of historical documents relating mainly to Mexico's colonial period.

The Bates mss., 1926-1932, are writings and letters of English author Herbert Ernest Bates, 1905-1974.

The Leiber, F. mss. II, ca. 1932-1970, consist of correspondence, writings, drawings, and photographs of science fiction writer Fritz Leiber, 1910-1992.

The Landers mss., ca. 1990s-2008, consist of the manuscripts and papers of Clifford E. Landers, Professor Emeritus of Political Science.

The Indianapolis Mapping and Geographic Infrastructure System (IMAGIS) project contains administrative documents used by the project team as it developed between 1987-1988.

The Bruner Foundation was founded in 1963 using funds donated by Rudy and Martha Bruner. The foundation began with the purpose of aiding programs in health care and preventive medicine, and programs focused on Jewish concerns. Since the 1980s, the Bruner Foundation has broadened its purpose to include educational programs, evaluation of grant programs, and urban renovation. Today, the main activity of the foundation is the Rudy Bruner Award for Excellence in the Urban Environment, given every two years. The records consist mainly of the Bruner Foundation's activities since 1965. These documents include board minutes, grant records, educational programs, correspondence, conference proceedings, and the records of the Rudy Bruner Award for Excellence in the Urban Environment.

The Jay mss., 1864-2005, consist of approximately 325 spirit photographs and related correspondence and printed materials collected by magician Ricky Jay, 1946-2018.

The Groups Student Support Services program was established in 1968. The primary goal of the program is to address low college attendance rates among first-generation, low-income, and physically challenged students at Indiana University. The program is still a functioning part of Indiana University and each year helps approximately 300 freshmen adjust to college life. The collection is comprised of the files accumulated under former director, LaVerta L. Terry, including correspondence, reports, financial records, and proposals.

The Jay mss. II, 1940s-2018, consist of the correspondence, research files, and manuscripts of magician Ricky Jay (1946-2018).

Theophilus A. Wylie was the cousin of Indiana University's first president Andrew Wylie and spent most of his adult life at IU, beginning in 1836,serving as its librarian, professor, vice president, and at one point, its interim president. Collection consists of Wylie's correspondence, diaries, sermons, drawings, and writings.

The English Department records span more than a century, from 1886 to 2012. The collection consists of correspondence between the acting chairman and English faculty members at IU and other institutions in the United States as well as students. The administrative files contain memos, correspondence with IU English faculty and regional campuses, reports pertaining to department committees, programs, courses, publications, other activities that concerned the development and growth of the Department. The publications files contain journals and other published material relating to Bloomington's English department.

Established as the Regional Economic Development Institute in 1984, the Indiana University Institute for Development Strategies is a university-wide program that focuses on research to promote economic development, and in particular the links between globalization, entrepreneurship, and the strategic management of regions to promote economic development. Directors of the Institute have included Charles Bonser, 1988-1997, and David Audretsch, appointed in 1998. Bonser also served as the first endowed Chair of the Ameritech Fellowship Program, which was established with a grant from the Ameritech Foundation. Research projects funded by this grant targeted major issues related to the new and emerging economies of mature economic regions with emphasis placed on the American Midwest. This collection consists of correspondence, research proposals and reports, publications, annual reports, working papers, committee files, conference and workshop information, and project records. Prominent in the collection is the Director's correspondence series, organized into two sub-series by incumbent, and records relating to the research projects funded by the Institute. The collection also includes files related to the establishment of the Institute, located in the Administration series.

The Department of French and Italian at Indiana University was established in 1934, when the Department of Romantic Languages split into French and Italian and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. This collection covers the period 1935-2015 and consists of administrative files, such as annual reports, minutes, and newsletters, as well as faculty files that include articles, newspaper clippings, curricula vitae, correspondence, and other material.

Roger Wilkinson was an Indiana University professor of physics from 1946-1968. Collection consists of correspondence, publications, lecture notes, and laboratory reports. The lecture notes included in the collection are from both Wilkinson's tenure as a professor as well as notes he took as a student at the University of Chicago. The Publication series consists of reprints of articles authored or co-authored by Wilkinson, 1951-1968.

David Starr Jordan was born in Gainesville, New York on January 19, 1851 to Hiram J. and Huldah Lake (Hawley) Jordan. He received his BA and MS degrees from Cornell University in 1872. In 1879 Jordan was hired as professor of Natural History at Indiana University, and in 1885 he was elected as the seventh president of IU. Jordan held that position until 1891, when he left IU to become Stanford University's first president. Jordan died in 1931. The David Starr Jordan papers total 1.2 cubic feet and span the years 1874-1929. The Jordan papers are divided into two series: Correspondence and Publications, lectures, and addresses.

The Indiana University Office of Publications is one of the oldest non-academic offices on campus. Its records date primarily from the tenure of Ivy Leone Chamness, who served as Head Editor of University Publications from 1917-1952. Collection includes correspondence, manuscripts, and newspaper clippings. Prominent in the collection are edited manuscripts of the two volume History of Indiana University written by Burton Dorr Myers and James A. Woodburn.

James H. Rudy was an Indiana University alumnus who was granted an AB in English in 1932. In his will Rudy left the bulk of his estate to Indiana University, which was used to begin and fund the Rudy Professorships to attract and retain outstanding faculty. Collection consists of papers brought together after Rudy's death by the Owensboro, Kentucky law firm Wilson and Wilson, who represented Rudy's friends and lawyer when his sister, Sarah Gray Rudy McNulty, contested his will. Collection includes notes, correspondence, journals and ledgers, depositions, and legal papers. The depositions include Rudy's family and friends in addition to Indiana University Vice President and Treasurer Joseph A. Franklin. Prominent correspondents include Rudy's mother-in-law Grace Blair, his mother Katherine F. Rudy, his sister Sarah McNulty, and family friends Linda and Charles Boswell.

An Indiana University Professor of Education, Lunstrum's primary area of interest was social studies and he was a strong proponent of incorporating non-western history into the social studies curriculums of both primary and secondary schools. Collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, proposals, and syllabi. The Councils and committees series is comprised of records that reflect Lunstrum's membership and leadership in state, national, and university groups, including the National Council for the Social Studies Audio-Visual Committee.

Ivy Chamness was a teacher, editor and a writer, and was actively involved on many committees. Her papers demonstrate that her life revolved around education through copies of her editorials, her personal correspondence, minutes from various committees upon which she served, journals from her travels, and various documents relating to her work here at IU pre and post-retirement.

Robert d'Escourt Atkinson, astronomer, physicist, and inventor, was known around the world for his work in general physics, atomic synthesis and stellar energy, precision astrometry and fundamental astronomy, instrumentation, and relativity. Consists of personal papers, research notes, published papers, and class and lecture notes of Robert d'E. Atkinson in seven series: Pre-IU, 1918-1978, containing papers and correspondence from his college days, World War II, and from his time at the Royal Observatory in England. A great deal of the Royal Observatory records are about the Observatory's move to Hurstmonceux, which Atkinson oversaw. Conferences and Meetings, 1958-1987, containing pamphlets and notes on conferences he attended; Correspondence, 1926-1981, containing personal correspondence with friends and colleagues. Prominently feature are famed astronomer and astrophysicist Henry Norris Russell and correspondence about Herman B Wells Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Publications and Papers, 1893-1980, consists both of Atkinson's papers and papers of others he chose to save; Subject files, 1924-1981, consists of notes, correspondence, and publications on relativity, Mirror Transit Circles, astrometry, and miscellaneous files; Indiana University, 1964-1981, made up of notes and correspondence from his time as a visiting professor at IU; Visual Materials, 1948-1979 containing photographs, glass and plastic slides, charts, microfiche, and a short home film.

Barbara Shalucha founded the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center in Bloomington, Ind. in 1948 and served as its director until 1986. Shalucha first came to Indiana University as an instructor in the Botany Department. She was hired for her special perspective on applied botany which incorporated youth involvement. The Barbara Shalucha papers comprise 7 cubic feet and span 1935-1992. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, publications, subject files, and teaching materials.

Established in Bloomington, Indiana, as the Bloomington Bible Chair by the Disciples of Christ in 1910; the name changed to the Indiana School of Religion in 1917. The mission of the School was to provide Biblical and religious education to, and to promote the religious education of, students who attended Indiana University. Collection consists of correspondence, minutes of the Board of Directors, financial records, publications, essays, pamphlets, and posters.

David Starr Jordan joined the IU faculty in 1879 as a professor of natural history. In 1885 at the age of 34, Jordan was appointed President of Indiana University. He served in that position until 1891 when he left IU to become the first president of the newly established Stanford University. The records of his presidency consist primarily of administrative files alphabetically arranged. The records also contain a few of Jordan's writings and addresses.

Records dating from the tenure of Indiana University President John Coulter. Organized into two series, the collection primarily consists of incoming correspondence during Coulter's tenure.

Contains annual, periodic, and summary reports of admissions, 1938-1971, and some additional material of a statistical and general nature.

The work of the Admissions Committee was to consider and recommend admissions policies, pre-college guidance procedures, and to act as a Board of Appeals. Consists of minutes of committee meetings, correspondence, notes, and administrative subject files of the chairman of the Admissions Committee, William H. Strain.

The University Interests Committee, which had been organized in 1912, moved into action in the 1920s to lobby the state legislature for funds on behalf of Indiana University and to generate interest in the University among civic and community leaders throughout Indiana. Collection consists primarily of correspondence between University Interests Committee members, special representatives, county organizers, the university president, alumni, university supporters, and state legislators. Also contains questionnaires assessing support for the lobbying campaign and a few records of the Women's University Interest Committee.

Lemuel Moss was Indiana University President 1875-1884. He left amidst a scandal involving himself and a female professor at the university. This small collection consists of correspondence with Rev. and Mrs. J. R. Scott and a poem Moss wrote for his wife in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary.

Ora L. Wildermuth was an Indiana University alumnus and trustee; a lawyer and judge; and a library trustee in both Indiana and Florida. He was also one of the first residents of Gary, Indiana. The papers of Judge Ora L. Wildermuth includes correspondence, diaries, speeches, lectures, and both published and unpublished writings. A great deal of genealogy information can be found in the Wildermuth Family Association series.

Della J. Evans was an Indiana University alumna who graduated in 1897. She was a writer and sometimes wrote under the pseudonym Julian Allen. Collection consists of sketches, correspondence, journals, essays, plays, short stories, and poetry.

The Board of Aeons was established on March 29, 1921 to function as a link between the student body and the administration. It is composed of 8 to 12 students of at least junior standing and meets regularly but informally once or twice a week with the President, Vice-President, Chancellor or other administrative officials. The Board of Aeons records include minutes, agendas, reports, correspondence, and officers' notebooks.

Established in 1902, the Panhellenic Association is the coordinating student organization for sororities at Indiana University. Collection consists of correspondence, publications, agendas, budget information, and scrapbooks.

The Regional Campus Coordinating Committee was established in 1966. It was composed of two administrative officers and one faculty member from both Indiana and Purdue Universities and was responsible for reviewing all regional campus program proposals and passing on its recommendations to the Trustees Joint Policy Council. Collection consists of meeting minutes, correspondence, proposals, reports, and research files.

The Alpha Chapter of the Latina-oriented sorority Gamma Phi Omega was founded in 1991 and was recognized as an official sorority at Indiana University in 1992. The National Board of Directors for the group was established in 1995 with the headquarters located at IU, though they have since relocated to Chicago, Ill. Collection includes records from both the Alpha Chapter and National Board of Directors of Gamma Phi Omega and consists of agendas, minutes, correspondence, membership lists, and constitutions.

On July 15, 1942 Indiana University welcomed 200 Navy yeomen to campus to participate in the Naval Training School. In October of 1942 WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) arrived on campus for navy storekeepers training. By May 1944 the Naval Training School had trained 5008 Navy yeomen and storekeepers. The school would be closed one month later. This collection consists of manuals, syllabi, student information, naval school publications, administrative materials, and the correspondences of the education director of the Navy training school Elvin S. Eyster and Robert T. Ittner, assistant to President Herman B Wells.

One of the two chief literary societies on campus, the Athenian Society was founded at Indiana University in 1830. Literary societies gave students practice in speaking and writing through regular orations, essays, and debates, as well as filling a social role. Collection consists of minutes, correspondence, publications, addresses, and announcements. The Publication series includes copies of the Athenian, a monthly periodical of writings submitted by members of the Athenian Society that were of "a high literary character," including what the editors considered "chaste and elevated literature." These span December 1845 through November 1846. Most prominent in the collection are the minutes from the weekly meeting of the Society.

The University Provost position was created by William Lowe Bryan in 1923 in order to delegate management of the Indianapolis campus to another administrator. Samuel E. Smith held this position until his death in 1928. Collection consists of records of the University Provost in two series: Correspondence and Subject files. The Correspondence series is further organized in three subseries: General, State field nursing, and Construction. The Subject files series contains inventories, records, and reports from a variety of sources. The subject of medicine is most prominent and a good number of the records are about Riley Hospital for Children. Copies of several House Bills can also be found here.

Pi Lambda Theta was founded in 1910 as an honor and professional association for women in education. In 1920, the Iota chapter was chartered at Indiana University. In 1974, the organization began admitting men. Collection consists of minutes, a ledger book, constitutions, membership information, publications, and scrapbooks.
