The Indiana University Folklore Institute is an active center of folklore scholarship and has a long history of collecting oral literature and arts. This collection consists of papers written on a variety of topics by students taking courses in the Folklore Institute. These papers are dated roughly between 1967 through the early 2010s.

The Josef Gugler collection consists of promotional materials for films produced in or directed by filmmakers from Africa and the Middle East. Over 500 unique films by approximately 350 film directors are represented. Formats include film posters, pressbooks, chirashi flyers, lobby and storefront cards, handbills, photographs, slides, and audiovisual recordings.

The Alice and Hans Tischler Collection of Israeli and Jewish Composers, 1929-2008, consists of printed and recorded music written by Jewish and Israeli composers and collected by music librarian Alice Tischler and musicology professor Hans Tischler as well as the Tischers' research notes and other personal effects.

Production materials documenting Smithsonian's thirteen-part program on the role of radio in transforming the African American community in the twentieth century. The program was produced in 1996 by Jacquie Gales Webb for Smithsonian Productions, with assistance from the AAAMC. The collection contains over 400 hours of interviews and historical aircheck tapes in addition to articles, research files, program scripts, and transcripts. The audio interviews feature conversations with over 150 well-known disc jockeys, radio professionals, record company executives, journalists, and scholars. The historical airchecks include station identifications and jingles, radio interviews with prominent Black figures, coverage of historical events, and programs highlighting or influenced by the contributions of Black performers, disc jockeys, and other important persons in radio.

The Phyl Garland Collection consists primarily of personal papers, including original typescripts for Garland's columns in Ebony and Stereo Review, and related research and photographs. Also included are 41 original audiocassette recordings of interviews conducted by Garland (except as noted) primarily with various African American musicians, artists, and filmmakers. Topics include African American composers and musicians as well as various genres of music including, but not limited to, jazz, R&B, soul, rock, classical, and blues. Record company publicity materials include publicity photos and press releases for over 900 artists.

Music manuscripts composed and arranged by Phil Moore including scores and parts for full orchestra, small ensembles, vocalist with keyboard accompaniment, lead sheets, and initial sketches. Moore composed in a wide range of genres, but works in various jazz styles popular during the early 1940s through the 1960s are particularly well represented. His musical manuscripts include arrangements for night club acts, musicals, and studio recordings; soundtrack material for films, television productions, cartoons, and commercials; and various forms of Western art music. When known, the name of the artist a specific arrangement was made for has been provided.

This is an artificially created collection that contains recordings and promotional materials for interviews and events created as part of the Indiana University Black Film Center & Archive's ongoing in-house research and outreach initatives.

The collection consists of materials related to Smithsonian Institution programs, including the Duke Ellington Youth Project, in addition to gospel sheet music and related research materials from George's personal collection.

This collection, which was donated as part of the Mary Perry Smith Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame Archives Collection, contains the personal papers and artifacts, business and financial records, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and musical manuscripts of composer, arranger, performer, and talent coach Phil Moore.

The Bridgett Davis Naked Acts collection focuses on Davis's activities as a filmmaker from 1994 through 2009. The collection comprises production materials, film elements, promotional materials, and press coverage related to the film and Davis's role in its creation.

This series contains audiovisual recordings of events hosted by the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame including the annual Oscar Micheaux Awards Ceremony, Independent Film, Video & Screenplay Competition awards ceremony, Film and Lecture Series, annual symposium, and Black Filmworks film festival, as well as various workshops, lectures, interviews, and miscellaneous smaller events.

The Adomeit mss., 2000 BCE - 1995 CE, consists of miniature manuscripts collected by Ruth Elizabeth Adomeit, 1910-1996.

The collection consists primarily of audio tapes of two radio programs produced by Bailey Broadcasting Services: The Hip Hop Countdown & Report (1991-1998) and RadioScope: The Entertainment Magazine of the Air (1990-1996). Press releases for RadioScope broadcasts are also included.

This collection consists of documentation and one-on-one interviews from the AAAMC's two-day conference on Black rock hosted on the Indiana University-Bloomington campus on November 13-14, 2009. The conference and related activities were open to local and regional musicians, scholars, students, and brought together Black rock musicians from different generations and regions with music critics and scholars to discuss the socio-political history, musical developments, and the future of Black rock.

Teaching Film Custodians, Inc. (TFC) began in the 1920s and merged with Indiana University in 1973. The mission of the company was to provide educational films to schools, colleges and universities and to promote the value of the motion picture. This collection of paper materials consists of dubbed newsreel scripts in five languages and their English translations.

The collection includes Burnim's dissertation research on African American religious music conducted primarily in Indiana between 1976-1979 with an emphasis on gospel music performance and practice; and post-dissertation research on African and African American religious music conducted between 1980-1996 in the U.S., Cuba, Liberia, and Malawi. Also included is documentation of the 1984 Smithsonian American Folklife Festival and gospel sheet music. The collection was primarily recorded on analog audio formats and includes audiocassettes, open reel tapes, videocassettes, open reel video, slides, sheet music, song texts, and additional documentation.

The Taylor, F. mss., 1932-1984, consist of the correspondence, papers, business files and memorabilia of publisher and film producer Frank Eugene Taylor, 1916-1999.

Robert H. Shaffer was affiliated with Indiana University for nearly 40 years. He served as Dean of Students from 1955 to 1969 before returning to faculty work full-time. This collection encompasses Robert and Marge Shaffer's personal collection of scrapbooks, with many of them containing newspaper clippings from his time as Dean and photographs from his travels across the world.

The American literature mss., 1789-2000, consists of an ongoing collection of individual items related to American literature.

The Allen mss., 800-1972, consists of manuscript pieces collected by William Edward David Allen, 1901-1973, foreign service officer, businessman, and author, and his own writings about Georgian history.

The Alfonso Montecino Collection consists of the works, papers, and selected music collection of the pianist Alfonso Montecino.

Collection consists primarily of interview transcripts, program transcripts, and artist publicity materials used in the production of the Westwood One Radio programs Special Edition, That's Country Music, Rock Chronicles, My Top Ten, and History of Rock 'n Roll. It also contains materials from various specials including programs on Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, and the Rolling Stones.

The collection includes 47 audiocassettes and partial transcripts of interviews conducted by Jackson primarily for his book, A House On Fire: The Rise and Fall of Philadelphia Soul, as well as related articles and book drafts.

The Indiana University Audio-Visual Center (IU-AVC) was a service of the Indiana University Extension Division that produced, collected and distributed educational films and videos to institutions and organizations throughout the United States. The films, videos and all paper documentation that made up this century old film distribution unit of Indiana University was transferred to the IU Libraries in the early 2000's. As part of what is now the core holdings of the IU Libraries Moving Image Archive, in addition to the films and videos that made up the early years of the Archive, the paper teacher's guides that correspond to instructional films and videos spanning the late 1920's into the early 2000's are an important historical record of this history.

The Miscellaneous mss., 2100 BCE-1970, consist of individual items acquired individually either as a gift or purchased from a variety of sources.

The Cunningham mss., circa 1985-2008, consist primarily of manuscripts, drafts, correspondence, and other material by scholar and writer Rodger Cunningham, Professor of English at Alice Lloyd College in Kentucky.

The Department of Geography Records include department newsletters from 1997-1998.

David Anspaugh is an award-winning producer and director, Indiana native, and alumnus of Indiana University Bloomington. He is perhaps best known for directing critically-acclaimed against-the-odds sports movies with Indiana settings - Hoosiers (1986), a Cinderella story about the state basketball tournament in the 1950's, and Rudy (1993), a true story about a walk-on player on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. This collection consists of production material, photographs, and correspondence related to Anspaugh's five-decade career in film, theater, and television, as well as 16mm films made by Anspaugh as an undergraduate at IU Bloomington.

The Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies (RCLSS) was initially founded by Herman B Wells in 1955 as the Research Center for Anthropology, Folklore, and Linguistics; it was renamed the Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies in 1975. RCLSS evolved and grew rapidly under the direction of Thomas A. Sebeok, who served as Chairperson from 1956 through his retirement in 1991. The Center's primary functions included research, publishing, teaching, and the advancement of institutional connections in the interdisciplinary field of semiotics. This collection contains administrative records, student files, undergraduate and graduate curriculum development materials, committee reports and records, course files, and issues of the RCLSS in-house periodical Language Sciences.

The Lamb, H. mss., 1917-1919, consist primarily of letters, diaries, and photographs by and relating to Harley Lamb, 1895-1972, while serving in the American Expeditionary Force during World War I.

The Maugham mss., 1904-1973, consist of the contracts and correspondence about those contracts for works by William Somerset Maugham, 1874-1965, English novelist and playwright.

The Winston mss., ca. 1998 - 2011, consist of drafts of German literature translations by Krishna Winston, a professor in the German Studies Department at Wesleyan University.

The James, C.L.R. mss., ca. 1942-1974, consist of correspondence and writings of West Indian writer and political activist Cyril Lionel Robert James, 1901-1989.

The Krueger mss., 1988-1993, consist of translations from English into German of literary works by British authors Julian Barnes and William Boyd. The translator is Gertraude Krueger of Berlin and the translations were published by Haffmans Verlag in Zurich in the case of Barnes and by Rowohlt Verlag in Hamburg for Boyd.

The Lockhart, R. mss., 1906-1969, consist of the correspondence, writings and memorabilia of Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart, 1887-1970, diplomat and writer.

The Graves mss., 1914-1994, consist of correspondence and research materials collected by Richard Perceval Graves, 1945- , in preparation for writing his biography of Welsh author, Richard Arthur Warren Hughes, 1900-1976.

The Binkley, Raglind mss., ca. 1450-1842, consist of medieval fragments collected by Thomas and Raglind Binkley.

The Joris, Pierre mss., ca. 1960-2010, consist of the papers of the noted poet, translator and essayist, Pierre Joris, 1946-.

The Latin American mss. Mexico III, 1563-1855, consist of historical documents relating mainly to Mexico's colonial period.

The Bates mss., 1926-1932, are writings and letters of English author Herbert Ernest Bates, 1905-1974.

The Leiber, F. mss. II, ca. 1932-1970, consist of correspondence, writings, drawings, and photographs of science fiction writer Fritz Leiber, 1910-1992.

The Landers mss., ca. 1990s-2008, consist of the manuscripts and papers of Clifford E. Landers, Professor Emeritus of Political Science.

The Indianapolis Mapping and Geographic Infrastructure System (IMAGIS) project contains administrative documents used by the project team as it developed between 1987-1988.

The Bruner Foundation was founded in 1963 using funds donated by Rudy and Martha Bruner. The foundation began with the purpose of aiding programs in health care and preventive medicine, and programs focused on Jewish concerns. Since the 1980s, the Bruner Foundation has broadened its purpose to include educational programs, evaluation of grant programs, and urban renovation. Today, the main activity of the foundation is the Rudy Bruner Award for Excellence in the Urban Environment, given every two years. The records consist mainly of the Bruner Foundation's activities since 1965. These documents include board minutes, grant records, educational programs, correspondence, conference proceedings, and the records of the Rudy Bruner Award for Excellence in the Urban Environment.

The Jay mss., 1864-2005, consist of approximately 325 spirit photographs and related correspondence and printed materials collected by magician Ricky Jay, 1946-2018.

The Groups Student Support Services program was established in 1968. The primary goal of the program is to address low college attendance rates among first-generation, low-income, and physically challenged students at Indiana University. The program is still a functioning part of Indiana University and each year helps approximately 300 freshmen adjust to college life. The collection is comprised of the files accumulated under former director, LaVerta L. Terry, including correspondence, reports, financial records, and proposals.
