Administrative History

Founded on December 16, 1925 at Lafayette College, Alpha Phi Omega was established as a national service fraternity founded on the principles of leadership, friendship, and service. With a mission to prepare campus and community leaders through service, the organization's goal is to be recognized as a premier service- based leadership development organization. Since its founding in 1925, the fraternity has initiated over 300,000 members and current membership consists of over 17,000 members at 350 colleges and universities.

The Mu Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega was established at Indiana University on December 15, 1929 by founder Thornton Stone. Originally created as a fraternal organization based on the principles represented by the Boy Scouts of America, the Alpha Phi Omega Mu chapter has performed numerous service activities over the years, including continued involvement in scouting and in providing service to the campus, community, and nation. Significant activities include the Rubber Duck Regatta, Jail-a-thon, and officiating campus elections and participation in National Service Week. The chapter is involved with the national fraternity through a variety of activities including newsletters, Chapter Program Planning Conferences, intra-chapter workshops and fellowship activities, and national and regional conventions. The Mu chapter deactivated in July 1979 but was re-chartered on October 4, 1981.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Alpha Phi Omega Mu Chapter are organized into eight series: Administrative files; Service and activities; Pledge records; Minutes; Newsletters; Awards; Audiovisual Materials; and Photographs and Scrapbooks.

The first series, Administrative files, is arranged alphabetically and contains a wide variety of records including bylaws, chapter program planning conference information and materials, alumni information, leadership guides, membership applications, directories, Mu history, and national convention materials.

Arranged alphabetically, the second series, Service and activities, includes materials relating to service projects and social activities APO Mu organized and participated in. Included in this series are Jail-a-thon, Rubber Duck Regatta, Ugly Man on Campus, and Campus Elections.

The third series, Pledge records, is arranged alphabetically and consists of materials relating to pledges and pledge related activities, such as formal recruitment. This series contains a variety of materials, including pledge manuals, applications, and records, and rush activities and information.
