Biographical / Historical

Policies governing Indiana University (IU) faculty and student computer-use emerged in the 1960s under the advisement of the Research Computing Center Policy Committee. Academic computing further expanded during the 1970s-1980s with the guidance of various campus- and university-wide advisory committees. The Academic Computing Policy Committee (ACPC) evolved as an outgrowth of the Bloomington Campus Computer Use Committee, eventually supplanting it by 1987-1988.

In 1989, Bloomington Academic Computing Services (academic computing) and Information Services (administrative computing) merged to form University Computing Services. This unit formally established two ACPCs, one for the Bloomington campus and one university-wide, to advise on computing policies and priorities as they affected IU's academic functions (in particular, research and instruction). The initial charter included subcommittees on Technology and Standards, Applications, Service Delivery, and Support Systems. Membership consisted of faculty and students, including representatives from Bloomington Faculty Council and Indiana University Student Association. Ann Bristow, an Indiana University Bloomington Libraries faculty member from 1975-2004, served on the Bloomington ACPC 1987-1997, including roles on Academic Information System and budgetary subcommittees.

With IU's Information Technology Strategic Plan (May 1998), the work of the ACPC was subsumed into the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology's new committee and taskforce structure. This included the establishment of Campus IT Councils for Bloomington (IUB) and Indianapolis. The membership roster for the inaugural IUB Campus IT Council, 1998, included Ann Bristow as an IUB Libraries representative.

The collection also contains Bristow's notes and her printed email exchanges with other ACPC members. Collection contents highlight major developments in academic computing in the late 1980s-1990s, including changes in information resource retrieval systems, faculty and student email, student technology fee rates and expenditures, and network infrastructure.
