Biographical Note

Lawrence Abbott, 1902-1985, was born July 9, 1902 in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York. He attended Harvard, receiving an A.B., cum laude, in 1924, and then Columbia University for an A.M. in 1945 and PhD. in 1951. He is self-described as having a "career-hopping life" working in advertising, fundraising, broadcasting and magazine editing among other professions before moving into economics and academia. Following his retirement from the faculty of the University of Connecticut in 1968, Abbott devoted his life and work to the World Federalist cause. He served variously as president and secretary of the Mansfield chapter, delegate to and secretary of the New England board, delegate and secretary to the national board, and editor of the national newsletter, The Federalist . Abbott is the author of The Listener's Book on Harmony as well as of books on economics. He died on December 8, 1985.

Scope and Contents

The Abbott mss., 1969-1985, consists of the files of retired professor of economics Lawrence Abbott, 1902-1985, relating to his activities with the World Federalist Association (WFA) and with the Mansfield, Connecticut chapter in particular. The U.S. Foreign Policy series includes materials related to U.S. foreign policy and U.S. military policy and spending. The World Federalist Policy and Records series includes documents related to board proceedings and policy initiatives. The Publications series includes published material and documents related to publication planning. The Early Policy series includes WFA materials (1979-1985). The Organizational series includes administrative documents. The Correspondence series includes correspondence with various WFA members and affiliates, including Edward Rawson. The World Federation Field includes materials related to WFA chapters, WF New England, and WF New Jersey. The Parallel Organizations series includes materials related to organizations that shared similar objectives to the WFA such as Beyond War, the Institute for Defense and Disarmament Studies, and the World Citizens Assembly. The World Federation Association of New Englad series includes materials related to meetings and conferences. The United Nations series includes materials related to U.N. reform, speeches, and publications. The Transnational Perspectives, Issues and Concerns series includes materials related to global issues, notably nuclear policy, war systems, and the third world.
