Biographical Note

Juliette Adam (née Lambert), 1836-1936, was born in Verberie, France, in 1836. She founded La Nouvelle Revue in 1879 and served as its editor until 1899. The majority of the collection dates from the 1880s and the years of her editorship of the review. An activist, some of her interests included foreign policy and feminism; in fact, she was the only woman present at the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. An author herself, some of her works include "Idées antiproudhoniennes sur l'amour, la femme et le mariage" (1858), "Les provinciaux à Paris" (Paris for Outsiders) (1868), "Païenne" (1883), and "L'Angleterre en Egypte" (1922). Adam died in Callian in 1936 at the age of 100.
