Smith (born Annette LeBlanc) was born in Algiers, Algeria, in 1924. She earned two M.A.s from the Sorbonne, one in Classics and French literature and the other in English literature. In 1955 she began teaching in California at Scripps College in Claremont. In 1970 she earned a PhD. from the Sorbonne and began teaching at the California Institute for Technology until her retirement in 1993. Smith actively translated and published on 19th and 20th century French and Francophone literature, notably her multi-volume translations of the works of the poet Aimé Césaire.
Translation Notes and Drafts include drafts, proofs and notes for many Aimé Césaire poems. Research Materials include extensive research for Gobineau et l'Histoire Naturelle and Aimé Césaire's Collected Poetry . Correspondence is organized alphabetically and includes letters from Smith's translating partner Clayton Eshleman. Critiques include peer reviews and newspaper clippings, and Presentation Materials include drafts of several public talks. The Family series contains a memoir from the Andersonville Civil War Prison, as well as Smith's father's World War I diaries. Audio-Visual materials include computer diskettes, microcassettes, and DVDs.
