Lascelles Abercrombie, 1881-1938, was a British poet, born in Ashton upon Mersey, Greater Manchester. He attended Malvern College and Victoria University (now the University of Manchester). He worked as a literary journalist in his early career, then as a munitions examiner in World War I. Afterwards, he served as a lecturer at the University of Liverpool, a professor of English at Leeds, and Goldsmith's Reader in English at New College, Oxford. Amongst his published works of poetry are Interludes and Poems (1908), Mary and the Bramble (1910), Emblems of Love (1912), and Lyrics and Unfinished Poems (1940, posthumous). William Yeats, editor of the Oxford Book of Modern Verse, selected eight pages of poems by Abercrombie for the 1936 anthology. A member of the literary group 'Dymock Poets' and generally associated with Georgian poetry, Abercrombie contributed to the organizations's Georgian Poetry anthologies as well as to the Westminister Gazette. He also produced his own works such as Thomas Hardy (1912), The Idea of Great Poetry (1925), and Principles of Literary Criticsm (1932). Abercrombie died in 1938 in London at the age of 57.

The letters in the collection relate to Abercrombie's writings, their publication, reviews of them, printing directions, arrangements for lectures by him, and to the writings of others. They are addressed to Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong, who wrote under the pseudonym John Gawsworth; John Lane, publishers; Sir Michael Ernest Sadler; Matthew Phipps Shiel and others.
Abercrombie's writings included consist of two essays, "A personal note" and "Tess of d'Urbervilles - Jude the Obscure," and a review of "The Way of the Lord," by Elizabeth Gibson Cheyne.
