Biographical Note

Ruth Elizabeth Adomeit, 1910-1996, was a miniature book collector and bibliographer. She was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and worked as a secretary and research assistant in engineering, and as an elementary school teacher until her retirement. Collecting miniature books was her lifetime passion, begun with gifts from her father while she was at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. She edited Miniature Book Collector , a quarterly publication which consisted of eight issues, plus an index, from 1960 to 1962. Following the demise of this publication, she and other miniature book enthusiasts founded the Miniature Book Society, and Adomeit served as editor of the Society's newsletter for several years. Throughout this time and into the 1990s, she wrote several articles and spoke at various venues on miniature book collecting. In 1980, she completed a bibliography, Three Centuries of Thumb Bibles (New York: Garland Pub.), the standard reference work for these books.

Quantity: 4 x 4 x 1 cm.

Language: Arabic .

General:

  1. In silver metal octagonal box, designed with Arabic script, hinge, latch, and decorative side hooks for cord or chain; brown leather tooled cover.
  2. Opening page in blue, gold and red.
  3. Text bordered in gold and lines.
  4. Bookplate of Ruth Adomeit

General: It is in Naskh script in good quality in blue and in Ghubār script that suggests that the verses in red are added later by someone else with less skill in calligraphy. The verses in red are not in conformity with the verses in blue. For example, on one page, one could read verses 10-15 from one chapter in blue and verses 128-133 of the same chapter or even a different chapter in red. All in all, there is no semantic for the order of the chapters and verses, and even sometimes, the copyist who has written in red has omitted many verses. This Quran contains a few chapters of Quran; chapters are 1, 2, 17, 18, 20, 67, 78, 82, 99, 100, 101, 102, 105, 106, 113, and 114. One could assume that this Quran first has been written by someone(in blue), and then someone else has tried to add some more verses(in red). Lack of adequate space, both copyists have had a hard time writing verses, specifically the second copyist. Wherever there was a gap among the words that were not big enough to be filled with the following word, they have added a small ornament like this ※ to fill the gap. A leather binding that contain a hot stamp foliate in the middle and mumaḥḥat blind tooled ornaments. It has two double-page frontispieces Sarlawḥ muzdawaj for chapter 17, and chapter 114 and one Sarlawḥ for chapter 1. All pages are in triple octagonal black, gilded, and blue frames. The book was rebound once, and the order of the pages is wrong, and the one that has rebound that did not know Arabic. In the middle of the metal box led is a sunburst containing a part of the Quran chapter 61, verse 13, which says: help from Allah and present victory[نصر من الله و فتح قریب]. It is in Naskh script and in some parts close to Thuluth script. Around the central medallion is a part of the last verse of the 113th chapter of the Quran:"[May God keep us]from the evil of the envier when he envieth and from malignant witchcraft,"and "O thou Beneficient to all creatures[یا رحمن کل شیء و راحمه یا رب العقد و من شر حاسد اذا حسد] Around the box's body also, there are some names of GOD. The Islamic metalsmithing art of the box, solderings, and the two clasps suggest that it is an almost recent work and is about the early 20th century.

C12: Octagonal miniature Koran with Islamic metalsmith art box and a Byzantine chain. , 1843, 1259 AH

Quantity: 6.4 x 6.4 x 2 cm.

    • Ḥussain bin Ismāʿīl, 1940

  4. At the end a probable date of 1259 A.H. or 1843 Gregorian

General: It is in Naskh script. It has two marbled endpapers made with colorful minerals with a central design in both ends. They could be attached later to the Quran or they could be an original design for it too. The marbling is applied over an earlier paper which suggests that a bookbinder re-cased the volume at some point. However, this application might have happened not neccessarily much later than binding. It has two double-page frontispiece Sarlawḥ muzdawaj illuminated in high quality. The first contains gilded islīmī and khatāyī foliates that make four gilded lachak shape ornaments. These four gilded lachak s make a lozenge pattern mandorla which in the middle contains a cross shape islīmī in lapis lazuli. All around this central gilded mandorla there are four lachak s in lapis lazuli that meet the margins (ḥāshiyah) in girih shape toward the octagonal triple frames in gold, blue, and black. The outline are decorated with Sharafah . The second double-page frontispiece contain the first chapter of Quarn. Here gilded islīmī and khatāyī foliates make a Shamsah (Center-medallion namely sunburst) in lapis lazuli. The center is a gilded octagonal that contains the verses. An octagonal triple frame in gold, blue, and black decorated with Sharafah . Before each chapter there is a gilded katībah with a girih frame in lapis lazuli and white that contains the title and the number of verses in white. There are triple octagonal blue, black and gilded frames. One can see many marginal ع and خ letters that index khums and ʿUshr .

Binding is a Shamsah (Center-medallion namely sunburst) made out of islīmī foliates that contains khatāyī foliates with in. It was gilded and the gold now partially exists. For making this the binder uses a brass stamp made through Islamic metalsmithing. Around this Shamsah there are two octgonal gilded border stamps. The space between the two are decorated with 3 and 5 leaves khatāyī foliates. Pastedown leather has sūkht leather art. Again a Shamsah (Center-medallion namely sunburst) that contains islīmī and khatāyī foliates. There is a triple octagonal gilded stamp around the Shamsah .

There is a Persian poem at the end of this Quran which is a manual for divination via Quran. This poem is a wellknow poem from an unknown poet that appears in many Qurans remain from late Timurid or early Ṣafavid. Like No.4304 Iran National Museum, donated to Shaikh Ṣafī al-Dīn Ardabīlī's Shrine in 946 A.H.(1539)

The box has Islamic metalsmith art which contains Euoropean decoration on the cover, sides and back. It has a byzantine chain.

C13: Āyāt al-Aḥkām ( 'verses of the rules') , 1695 CE, 1107 AH

Quantity: 58 leaves. 8.5 x 5.9 x 8 cm.

Language: Arabic , Persian .

Indexed Terms:

  • People:
    • ʿAlī bin Isḥāq al-Marāghi-yī, 1813

General:

  1. Ms. from the reign of Suleiman Salawed(1686).
  2. Naskh script in advanced quality in black and Naskh in red. The red appears in both text and margin as an index since they are Āyāt al-aḥkām 'verses of the rules', those verses of the Qurʾān from which legal rulings are derived. It was well known amongst later jurists that the number of āyāt al-aḥkām is five hundred; when the jurists refer to 'the Book' as their foremost evidence and legal support regarding legislation they are referring to these verses.
  3. Khatāʾī gilded( muṭallā ) foliate without outlining and with frames ( jadwal-kashī ) that makes a headpiece( sarlawḥ ). On a goat leather pastedown there is a gilded painting( muṭallā ) Khatāʾī bud and leaf foliates with a chain form outline that in whole makes a tashʿīr like ornament. On the wild ass leather binding there is a painting which contains a central mandorla with two head-mandorlas on top and bottom.
  4. The book is rebounded once. The calligrapher while writing has left some parts of the text vacant in order to be filled out later in red. There he has written the prospective word in margin in a very small size in black. Some pages still contain these margins and in some pages the margin is cut and in some a part of those words has remained.
  5. The book has 57 leaves. The verso of the last leaf contains a famous quatrain in Persian that explains the supreme name of God.
  6. The Colophon(55r) is dated 1107 AH or 1695.
  7. The book also contains a dated provenance(1r): [Only,]He[, God,] is the Owner[of everything]! ʿAlī bin Isḥāq al-Marāghi-yī In 1228 A.H. or 1813

  5. It is 99 leaves. Naskh script in intermediate quality.
  6. It contains the chapters 1, 36, 48, 67, 78, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112, 113, and 114 of Quran. It contains some Quran verses that are traditionally used for prayers. It contains a table of 100 names of God that are known as Asmāʾ al-Ḥusnāʾ . It contains prayer manuals and their interpretation in Turkish. C16: A gathering of Ḥilyat al-Sharīfah and prayer manual , 1787-1798 CE, 1202-1213 AH

Physical Description: ca. 300 leaves. 15 x 10 x 1.5 cm.

Language: Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) , Arabic .

General:

  1. 8˚ European paper; Vertical chain line and watermarks in grape cluster shape; Dyed in madder. It is in Naskh script in good quality.
  2. The incipit is not paper but a piece of cardboard in madder. The Sarlawḥ contains the title for the sixth chapter of the Quran, namely al-Anʿām , however, immediately beneath there is another title for al-Fātaḥa , namely the first chapter. It appears that the above part of the Sarlawḥ is patched—now it is dispatched partially—to the verso of the cardboard; thus, the Sarlawḥ is from another manuscript and who has made this sophisticated gathering has borrowed the incipit page from another work and did not take care of the duplicated contradictory titles.
  3. This book contains the first chapter and the opening verses of the second chapter of the Quran, Ḥilyat al-Sharīfah , namely the description of the appearance of the Prophet of Islam (it is a tradition among Muslim calligraphers to write this and decorate its words), prayer manuals and their interpretation in Turkish, two poor quality paintings of Mecca and Medina, gilded images of the Prophet's footprint and his shoe, the gilded handprint of ʿAlī (the Prophet's son in law) and his sword, and a gilded painting of the Moses' stick. Some Quranic formulas presented in sextet Shamsah (circular, center-medallion sunburst) form.
  4. The colophon contains the name of Muṣṭafā al-Uskudārī; he is an Ottoman illustrator and calligrapher. From him two dated Qurans exist: one in Chester Beatty (CBL 1570) dated 1202 AH in which he made only the illustrations, and the calligrapher is someone else. The second, sold by Sotheby's (5 October 2011, Lot 80), is dated 1213 AH and he is the calligrapher and illustrator. Thus, it is known that he was active from 1202-1213 AH. The handwriting and illumination of the Sotheby's Quran are quite close to this book.
  5. Leather binding with an envelope flap that holds a gilded head-mandorla stamp. The front and back covers both are patchwork leather ( qaṭʿī ) binding with a central mandorla and two head-mandorlas top and down; both with triple square borders gilded stamp.
