Edward Franklin Albee III (1928-2016) was born Edward Harvey in Washington, D.C. and adopted at the age of two weeks by Reed A. and Frances (Cotter) Albee. At the age of 18, Albee moved out of his parent's home to pursue his work as an American Playwright. Notable work by him include: The Zoo Story (1958), The Sandbox (1959), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962), and A Delicate Balance (1966). Albee has won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and two Tony Awards for two of his other plays.
The Albee mss., 1961, consists of mimeographed stage scripts for The American Dream and The Death of Bessie Smith , two one-act plays by American dramatist Edward Albee, 1928-2016. Each play is accompanied by a Stage Play License, signed by the Lord Chamberlain, 20 October 1961, permitting performance by the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre, Sloane Square, S.W.1 [London].
The American Dream is in a buff colored folder labeled with title and author and a signed certification that the play is "a true copy ... as licensed." Typed on the author/title label are words, in red, CORRECT VERSION. Each page of the script is stamped: Certified copy of stage play licensed by the Lord Chamberlain, St. James' Palace. Pages 5, 10, and 24 have additional stamps, in purple: Deleted by the Lord Chamberlain.
The Death of Bessie Smith is in a blue folder labeled with title and author and a signed certification that this is a "true copy of the play ... as licensed." Each page of the script is stamped: Certified copy of stage play licensed by the Lord Chamberlain, St. James' Palace. Pages 4, 6A, 8, 10, 13, 14, and 17 have additional stamps, in purple: Deleted by the Lord Chamberlain.
The accompanying licenses are printed forms filled-in and carry the signature Scarbrough as Lord Chamberlain.
