Lady Cynthia Mary Evelynn (Charteris) Asquith, 1887-1960, was a novelist. She was the daughter of the 11th Earl of Wemyss and was married to Herbert Asquith. She contributed significantly to her family's income through her creative writing; she wrote autobiographies and biographies, novels, children's stories, and a World War II diary. Many of her works were published posthumously. She published The Ghost Book , a significant early example of a modern ghost story anthology, in 1926. Thoughout the 1950s, Asquith published two more Ghost Books as well as other horror anthologies, including Shudders (1929) and When Churchyards Yawn (1931). She also acted as a private secretary to Sir James Matthew Barrie, author of Peter Pan . Asquith died in 1960.
