Historical Note

In 1539, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and Francis I of France signed the Treaty of Toledo, agreeing to make no further alliances with England. In the same year, Charles V stifled a rebellion in Ghent and signed the Treaty of Franfurt with the Lutheran Schmalkaldic League.

In 1710, Pylyp Orlyk, a Cossack of Ukraine, was elected as the Hetman of the Zaporizhian Host and published Pacts and Constitutions of Rights and Freedoms of the Zaporizhian Host . In the same year, during the Great Northern War, Sweden lost control of Estonia and Livonia to the Russian Empire.

The Baltic mss., 1539-1710, consists of four volumes of Russian and Slavic legal documents authored by various persons.
