Biographical Note

Charles Ralph Boxer was born on March 8, 1904, in Sandown, Isle of Wight, England, to Hugh Edward Richard Boxer and Jane Patterson. He attended Wellington College from 1918 to 1921 and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, from 1922 to 1923. In 1924, Boxer began his military service by joining the Lincolnshire Regiment. From 1930 to 1933, he was seconded to a regiment of the Imperial Japanese Army, an experience that stimulated his scholarly interest in East Asian cultures and history and impacted his later academic career. Before the start of World War II, Boxer made his mark in academic circles by publishing over eighty scholarly works. On June 8, 1939, he married Ursula Norah Anstice Tulloch (1909-1996), and Boxer was stationed in Hong Kong from 1939 to 1941 to serve as chief of army intelligence. While in Hong Kong, Boxer fell in love with the American feminist writer Emily (Mickey) Hahn (1905-1997). In December 1941, the Japanese invaded Hong Kong and took Boxer as a prisoner of war until the conclusion of World War II. The Japanese military also confiscated his prized rare book collection and transferred it to the Imperial Library; Boxer later recovered most of his library. In 1945, Boxer divorced Tulloch as a result of his widely publicized love affair, and he married Hahn in New York on November 28. Boxer retired from the army at the rank of major in 1947 and moved his family to the family estate in Broadmayne, Dorset, England.

Shortly after the end of his military career, Boxer was offered the Camoens chair of Portuguese in King's College London, which he accepted and held until his retirement from King's College in 1967, excepting a three-year period (1951-1953) when Boxer was professor of history of the Far East in the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. In 1955, Boxer moved to Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire, England, which remained his permanent place of residence until his death. From 1967 to 1972, Boxer was simultaneously a research professor at Indiana University and professor of the history of the expansion of Europe at Yale University. In 1972, he retired from Yale as professor emeritus and continued to teach at Indiana University for seven more years. His initial research interests concerned early contact between Europeans, particularly the Dutch, the Portuguese, and Jesuit missionaries, and Japan, but Boxer later expanded his field of study to international history more broadly. He was a prolific writer and scholar, authoring about 350 books and articles. Boxer received many honors for his work, including election to the British Academy in 1957 and various honorary degrees and fellowships. King's College, London's Charles Boxer chair of history was established in his honor. Boxer passed away on April 27, 2000, in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, at the age of 96.

Arabic
The first volume of a 30-volumes Quran. , 16th century -

Quantity: 32 pages. 24 cm

Language: Arabic .

General: It is in Naskh script in good quality. It contains the first chapter and 141 verses of the second chapter, namely the first Juzʾ (part) of Quran. Contains catchwords. Each page has a double-square gilded and black border. It has written Tajwīd symbols in red. Juzʾs (parts) and Ḥizbs (portions) are indexed in the margins in red. It has a gilded double-page frontispiece Sarlawḥ muzdawaj with two katībah s in each page, up and down, in which the title of each chapter and two miscellaneous verses from the chapter 56th.

  1. "Islamic/Persian binding"

For two reasons one could suggest that this Quran is the first part of a Quran in 30 volumes. First, these Qurans are made for public use in mosques, specifically for funerals held in mosques. These volumes are distributed among the funeral attendees, who return them when they leave the funeral. Second, in the lower katībah of the left and right page's Sarlawḥ, there are two miscellaneous verses from chapter 56th that remind of the majesty of Quran and forbid touching Quran unless one has performed ablution. It is a traditional to write this verse on the front cover of the Quran to remind any user about this rule. However, for 30-volume Qurans, this verse will be written inside, leaving a broader margin so that even if one does not have time to make ablution, one can still recite Quran without necessarily touching its verses while they are turning the pages.

Leather binding with an envelope flap. The front and back covers contain a gilded central double square that contains a mandorla ( turanj ) which is filled with islīmī and Khatāʾī foliates frame and has been surrounded by four lachak s in corners. Two sar-turanj (head mandorla), with islīmī leaves and flower foliate inside, are in both sides of the central turanj . It has sūkht leather art. The central double square there is surrounded by another square. In the space between the two one sees qāb-sāzī art that contains islīmī and Khatāʾī foliates. Two leather pastedowns in both sides contains sūkht leather art. It has the same decoration as the covers. However, the space between the gilded central mandorla and four gilded lachak s is empty. All these are in black, red, and blue. In both leather pastedowns, specifically, the front cover's pastedown gilded parts are damaged and disappeared.

Het oud Oost-Indische Octroy, by de Hooch-Mogende Heeren Staten Generael der Vereenichde Nederlanden, inden Jare 1602 verleent, ende wtgegeven... Int Jaer dryentwintich, der lang-geweygerde, ende noch on-gedane Reeckeninge. [? Amsterdam, or the Hague , 1624]

Physical Description: Small 4to (220 x 160 mm), pp. 20; an untrimmed copy in 18th-century floral coloured paper wrappers, worn. With appendix listing the new directors.

Language: Dutch; Flemish .

Biographical / Historical: From Boxer's insert:

"Knuttel, 2536; JCB, II 188; Tiele, Bibl. Nederl. pamfletten, 490, 2061; van der Wulp, 1907.

Reissue of the patent for the Dutch East India Company, granted on 20 March 1602; it obliged the board of directors i.a. to publish information on the financial results of their administration. The present reprint is one of a series of pamphlets issued to show the perfidity of the directors of the East India Company who refused to render any account, originating from the shareholders of the later established West India Company. Their heavy struggle with the sister company is shown in the date of the present pamphlet: 'the 23rd year of the longly refused and still absent rendering of accounts' (i.e. 1624), and the list at the end of newly appointed directors, who had acted contrary to the obligations which they had taken over from their predecessors."

Immediate Source of Acquisition: Purchase: 2001. Bernard Quaritch.

Custodial History

Acquired by Boxer in 1982, with a loosely inserted typescript description annotated by him. Boxer's signature and notes on inside front wrapper.
