Biographical Note

James William Corrigan, 1867?-1948, was a publisher born New York, 1867? and known in publishing circles as Billy Corrigan. He began working with G.P. Putnam's Sons and one of first book salesman representatives to visit Far West trade. In 1899 he became a partner with McClure-Phillips company and director of sales of the firm. In 1908 he helped establish George H. Doran company and became general manager. In 1927 when Doran merged with Doubleday, he became New York representative of Little, Brown and company of Boston. He retired in 1937 He was a member of Twelfth regiment, New York National Guard; New York Athletic Club and Siwanoy Country Club. Corrigan died August 26, 1948 at New Rochelle, New York. He had two children: William Botsford Corrigan, Pelham, New York; Elizabeth R. Montcure, Richmond, Virginia. Scope and Content Note

The Corrigan mss., 1888-1941, consist of letters to James William Corrigan, 1867?-1948, publisher. The correspondence from prominent authors relates primarily to publishing matters in Great Britain and the United States. Included in the collection are also a financial statement of the McClure company, September, 1908; photographs of Corrigan, and personal memorabilia.
