Biographical Note

Christina Georgina Rossetti, 1830-1894, was a poet known for her romantic, devotional, and children's works. Her best known work is a collection of poems entitled Goblin Market and Other Poems.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1828-1882, was a painter and poet who belonged to the avant-garde Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His illustration is featured on the 1862 cover of his sister Christina Georgina Rossetti's Goblin Market and Other Poems.

William Michael Rossetti, 1829-1919, was an author and critic. Like his brother Dante, he was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and became editor of their literary magazine, The Germ.

Scope and Content Note

The Rossetti mss., 1817-1893, consist of the correspondence of poet Christina Georgina Rossetti, 1830-1894, and her two brothers: painter, poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1828-1882, and author, critic William Michael Rossetti, 1829-1919. The collection also contains two letters to their grandfather, translator Gaetano Polidori and two letters to their aunt, Charlotte Polidori. The manuscripts were collected as a memorial to the Rossettis by William Michael Rossetti and presented to William Cushing Bamburgh in 1893. Many of the items carry W.M. Rossetti's pencilled notes of explanation and identification.

Main, Sir Frank Thomas Marzials, Joaquin Miller, Edward Moore, Sir James Augustus Henry Murray, John Murray, John Trivett Nettleship, Roden Berkeley Wriothesley Noel, Charles Patrick O'Conor, Charles Kegan Paul, Henry Stephens Salt, William Sharp, Frederic James Shields, Sarah Siddons, Frederic George Stephens, William Cave Thomas, John Todhunter, Theodore Watts-Dunton, and Thomas James Wise.

Also included in the collection are portions of envelopes addressed to William Michael Rossetti from Arthur James Balfour, Harry Quilter, Algernon Charles Swinburne, George Frederick Watts, and Walt Whitman.

Printed items include an admission card to the funeral of Sir Rowland Hill in Westminster Abbey, September 4, 1879.
