Edwin Hopkins was born October 8, 1876, in Indiana. His translations of Maxim Gorky from the early twentieth century have survived in published form, while his own plays no longer seem to be extant except in manuscript. He claimed in 1908 to be the inventor of the Hopkins talking motion pictures—"the first and only practicable combination of phonograph and cinematograph"—and served as President of the Playwrights League of New York.
The Hopkins, Edwin mss. consists of four unpublished plays by Edwin S. Hopkins, Jr. The manuscripts in this collection are Hopkins's own copies, reproduced from typescript: The Old Brick Walk ; Her Future: a Drama in Four Acts ; The Shop-Worn Wife ; and The Secret of Sunset Lode .
