Biographical Note

The American Literary Translators Association was founded in 1978. Over the years, it has successfully established a meaningful and productive interaction between independent and academic translators. Through an annual conference, newsletters, and the publication of Translation Review , ALTA works to enhance the professional status of literary translators and to provide forums for the study of translation. It is the only arts organization in the United States dedicated solely to the issues of literary translation. ALTA held annual conferences between 1978 and 2001 at several universities in the United States, including Indiana University Bloomington, Stanford University, the University of Texas, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. It also collaborates with the Literary Translators Association of Montréal.

Scope and Contents

The ALTA mss., 1978-2001, consists of programs and other materials relating to the annual conferences, and applications for travel fellowships to attend the meetings, 1994-1999, of the American Literary Translators Association.

The conference files are arranged chronologically by year of the annual meeting. The first folder, however, contains only a list of the names and addresses of the charter members. The actual meeting files begin in 1979 and vary greatly in content. A few of the more recent conference files include photographs; some include board or business meeting minutes and copies of the newsletter discussing the conference; two or three have annual reports of the organization. For the 1997 meeting, the twentieth anniversary of the organization, there is also a video of the conference and four cassette tapes of panel sessions.

The travel fellowship files are also filed chronologically by application year and then alphabetically by applicant name within the year. Each year, except 1998, has a folder indicating the fellowship winners. There are no application files for 1997.

Arrangement

The conference files are arranged chronologically by year of the annual meeting. The travel fellowship files are also filed chronologically by application year and then alphabetically by applicant name within the year.
