Photographs and negatives in the collection were created for Lilly Library publication, researcher use, and similar purposes in the years between the founding of the Lilly Library in 1960 and the transition to digital photography in the early 2000s.
The Lilly Library Photograph Files mss. consists of photographic prints and negatives depicting materials in the Lilly Library, principally arranged by call number of the materials depicted. Because the photographs and negatives were created for a variety of purposes, they cover a wide range of Lilly Library books and prints, with some areas of concentration listed in the container list.
The collection is arranged according to the call number of the book or other material depicted in the photograph or negative. Additionally, some folders are labeled with a general subject.
