Biographical Note

The Orr family emigrated from County Tyrone, Ireland to the United States in 1821, and in 1838, James Orr and his family settled in Delaware County, Indiana. This collection traces the ancestry of his direct descendants from 1726 to 1990. James Orr's son, James Orr Jr. (1815-1895), was active in civic and religious affairs and served two terms in the Indiana House of Representatives and one term in the Indiana Senate.

Within the collection, particular emphasis is placed upon Colonel William Orr, who served in the American Civil War, and his wife, Margaret Jane Small Orr. William was commissioned as a second lieutenant on July 29, 1861, as a first lieutenant on August 23, 1862, and as a captain on September 18, 1862, of Company K, 19th regiment, Indiana volunteers. He was promoted to major on August 4, 1864 and transferred to the 20th regiment, Indiana volunteers. On October 14, 1864 he was promoted to colonel and on May 15, 1865 received an honorable discharge. His brothers Samuel and James David were privates in the 19th regiment of Indiana volunteers.

The diaries included in the collection belong to Orr descendant John David Campbell (1891-1976). Campbell grew up in Beverly Hills in Chicago, Illinois. After serving in the Army during World War I, he worked for the meat packing company Swift & Co. in the export department in Europe. His son, David Crockett Campbell, is credited with the research for the Orr Genealogy.

Scope and Content Note

The series Orr Family Genealogy contains genealogy research in the forms of notes, trees, pedigree charts, and family group charts. It also contains two versions of the finished product, "The Orr Genealogy," which seeks to trace each branch of the family tree from James Orr Sr. and includes birth and death dates, spouses, children, burial location, and a minimal biography for each family member.

The series John David Campbell includes the diaries of Orr descendant John David Campbell (1891-1976). The final series, Oversize, contains household items belonging to Orr family members.
