Birch Bayh was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1957-1961 and U.S. Senator from 1962-1980. For a complete biography see Birch Bayh Senatorial Papers.
The collection includes scrapbooks compiled by Birch Bayh's wife Marvella; by his aunt, Katherine Henley; and by staff and friends, from the beginning of his political aspirations through the loss of his Senate seat in the 1980 election. Some scrapbooks contain items at front or back relating to Bayh's pre-political life and have been so described.

The scrapbooks have been maintained in their original order, with chronological designations based on items contained in them. Loose materials at the front or back of a scrapbook have been digitized in the order in which they appear. Items within other items follow the item in which they were contained.
There are no restictions to access to the digital copies. For reasons of preservation, special permission is required for access to the scrapbooks themselves.

After digitization of the scrapbooks, photographic prints were removed when possible without damage and digitized for inclusion in the the Birch Bayh Collection in Image Collections Online. Photocopies of the prints have been placed in the scrapbooks with a number linking them to the digital images.
