Background

Biographical / Historical:

Frank Lee Benns was professor of history at Indiana University from 1920-1945; his papers are in the Indiana University Archives. Kate Lee was the only child of the Benns's. She was schooled in Bloomington, graduated from Indiana University in the late 1930s, and married Keith Bates Robinson, a newspaper publisher in Rensselaer, Indiana. They had one child, Schuyler Lee Robinson, b. 1941, who attended IU as an undergraduate and for one semester of law school and became an editor of his father's newspaper. Schuyler died of complications from Hodgkin's disease in 1973. Following her husband's death in 1989, Kate returned to Bloomington and subsequently married widower Robert Sturgeon, professor emeritus of Economics at IU. She died in Bloomington in 1997.

Scope and Content:

Correspondence consists of letters among Benns family members, primarily between Kate Lee (Benns) Robinson Sturgeon and her parents and between Schuyler Lee Robinson and his parents and grandparents. Photographs include images of family members and buildings. Financial consists of tax forms, transactions, and miscellaneous materials related to the affairs of the Benns family. Miscellaneous includes academic, legal, biographical, and personal family documents.
