Background

Biographical / Historical:

Bogumil Witalis "Goosh" Andrzejewski, 1922-1994, was a scholar of Somali linguistics and professor of Cushitic languages and literatures at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He was born in Poznan. He joined the Free Polish Forces as a teenager during World War II and served in the Palestinian military and the British Royal Air Force. He began his university studies in 1944, earning a degree in English linguistics in 1947. He was then hired as a linguist for a project run by C.R.V. Bell that concerned the structure of the Somali language. He continued to work on linguistic projects in and about Somali and Oromo through the sixties and seventies. He was promoted to Professor of Cushitic Languages and Literature in 1980 and retired in 1982. He continued to research and catalogue materials until his death in 1994.

Scope and Content:

The Andrzejewski mss. II, 1950-1990, consists of poetry manuscripts, drafts and fragments, as well as notes relating to other writings, of Somali linguistics scholar and poet Bogumil Witalis "Goosh" Andrzejewski, 1922-1994. Some of the manuscripts are for published works, the great majority however are unpublished.
