Background

Biographical / Historical:

Emmet Hoyt Scott, 1842-1924, was born in Broome County, New York, on July 20, 1842, to Wiley Huntington and Aseneth (Locke) Scott. He started working for the Adams & American Express Company in Centralia, Illinois, in 1863. He then worked for the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad (1864-1867) before becoming superintendent of the construction and operating departments of the Chicago, Cincinnati and Louisville Railroad Company. He married Mary Relief Niles, 1839-1916, on December 29, 1870, and they went on to have six children: Mary Polke, 1871-1873; Emmet, 1873-1937; Margaret, 1875-1884; Fanny, 1877-1979; Sarah Polke, 1880-1885; and Katherine, 1881-1888. Scott was a prominent figure in the lumber and copper industries in Michigan from 1869 to 1887 and owned real estate and farms in both Michigan and Indiana. He served as mayor of LaPorte, Indiana (1889-1894); helped develop Munising, Michigan; and was general manager of the Munising Railway built from Munising to Little Lake to connect with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in 1895. In the early 1900s, he traveled in Central America, South America, and Europe. Scott died in LaPorte, Indiana, on June 20, 1924. Additional biographical information may be found in E.D. Arthur Lee Scott, 1845-1878, brother of Emmet Hoyt Scott, was born in Nineveh, New York, on August 17, 1845. He served in the 27th New York Regiment during the Civil War and then attended Cooperstown Seminary in Cooperstown, New York (August 1865-March 1866). He worked as messenger and agent of the American Express Company in Chicago and Pana, Illinois, from 1866-1871, and was a partner in the Scott Brothers brewing firm from 1871-1872. He served in 5th U.S. Artillery, Company C, 1872-1877. From 1877-1878, he worked for Saginaw Copper Company in Saginaw, Michigan. He died on March 15, 1878, in Isle Royale, Michigan.

Scope and Content:

The Scott mss. II, 1854-1906, consists of the papers of Emmet Hoyt Scott, 1842-1924, railroadman, lumberman, manufacturer, and mayor of LaPorte, Indiana, and his brother, Arthur Lee Scott, 1845-1878, businessman. The collection consists of business, personal, and family correspondence of Emmet Hoyt Scott and Arthur Lee Scott; contracts and statements of accounts between tenants and Mary Relief Scott, wife of Emmet Hoyt Scott; maps of Fulton County, Indiana; an autograph book of Arthur Lee Scott while at Cooperstown Seminary; compositions written by Arthur Lee Scott while at Cooperstown Seminary; and a messenger's log book, diary, and receipt book of Arthur Lee Scott. Letters from Maria Amelia Scott, 1834-1889, who kept her father's hotel at Nineveh, New York, to her brothers Emmet Hoyt and Arthur Lee Scott comment extensively on contemporary social events as well as family matters. Correspondents represented in the collection include: W.C. Attix, C.H. Board, Charles Printy Drummond, Robert Holland Duell, John S. Gaylord, John W. Houghton, Samuel Franklin Miller, William B. Niles, Arthur Lee Scott, Edwin Wiley Scott, Emmet Hoyt Scott, Maria Amelia Scott, Jefferson Shafer, Milo R. Smith, and Horatio Governeur Wright. Printed matter in the collection includes programs from the Artillery School, U.S.A., 1873 and 1874; miscellaneous brochures and advertisements dealing with the brewing industry. Miscellaneous items include pieces about ditches, fencing and knitting.
