Background

Biographical / Historical:

Intercultural Publications was the publisher of Perspectives USA, a quarterly journal of American arts and letters which circulated in Europe. It was founded in 1950 by writer James Laughlin, 1914-1997, with the assistance of poet Hayden Carruth, 1921-2008, and funding from the Ford Foundation. The goal of the journal was to wage a "cultural cold war" against the Soviet Union. Sixteen issues of Perspectives USA were published, but the Ford Foundation cut off the project's funding in order to spend more money on the Congress for Cultural Freedom.
