Background

Biographical / Historical:

Deborah Starr (Waters) Norvelle was born in Catawissa, Pennsylvania, the daughter of John B. and Florence (Taylor) Waters. She graduated from Bloomsburg State Normal School in Pennsylvania, then attended Indiana University receiving her degree in education in 1927. Following graduation she married Lee Roy Norvelle, 1892-1984, a member of the Department of English, and later chairman of the Department of Speech and Theatre at Indiana University. For a period of several years Norvelle was an active contributor to Dell Crossword Puzzles.

Scope and Content:

The collection contains correspondence, family genealogy, travel journals and memorabilia relating primarily to travel. The correspondence consists chiefly of Norvelle's letters to her brother John B. Waters and cousin Margaret Schnick while traveling. These recipients then returned the letters to the writer so that they constitute a supplement to her travel diary and journals.

Other items in the collection include a lengthy diary, in parts, March 1935-January 1980; genealogy of Parvine, Starr and Taylor families; a travel diary of her first trip abroad in 1927, as well as 13 bluebooks containing travel notes 1953-1979; some poems and prose writings; pencil sketches. Memorabilia consisting of awards and certificates, travel mementos and newspaper clippings, including a few examples of her puzzles for Dell Crossword Puzzles, complete the collection.
