Background

Biographical / Historical:

Hochman was born Sept. 11, 1936, in New York City to Sidney and Mae (Barnett) Hochman. She completed her undergraduate degree in 1957 from Bennington College, which was followed by studies at the Sorbonne. Twice married and divorced, Hochman has one daughter, Ariel Leve. A prolific writer, she has earned distinction in several genres including poetry, novels and the screen play for the film, Year of the Woman (1973). In 1963, she was awarded the Yale Younger Poets award for Manhattan Pastures.

Scope and Content:

Writings include drafts and proofs of novels and other literary works by Sandra Hochman. Correspondence includes letters from Sandra Hochman to James T. Farrell and letters from Harvey Leve to Sandra Hochman. Personal contains financial papers, legal documents, and materials pertaining to Chile. Photographs are of mainly the Hochman family. Audio-Visual consists of DVDs and a VHS cassette tape of Year of the Woman. The Film series includes 35mm prints of Year of the Woman, and 8mm home movies of Sid Hochman.
