Background

Biographical / Historical:

Raymond Carver was a short-story writer and poet. He was born in Clatskanie, Oregon, on May 25, 1938, and grew up in Yakima, Washington. He received his BA degree from Humboldt State College in 1963 after becoming interested in writing following a creative-writing course taught by John Gardner.

Scope and Content:

Topics in the correspondence include: Vance's studies abroad; Raymond's various travels, lectures, readings, and awards; stories Raymond had written, had submitted for publication, or that were being published; play adaptations of his short-stories performed at Humboldt State College; discussions about Fires: Essays, Poems, Stories (1983); problems with Raymond's mother (Vance's grandmother); issues with Raymond's ex-wife, Maryann Carver (Vance's mother); information about Tess Gallagher's stories and poems.

Also included in the collection are articles by Vance and Raymond Carver, translated into German.
