Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Fitzgerald mss. II, 1923-1926 contains writing and correspondence of American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940). Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St. Paul, MN, and raised mainly in Buffalo, NY. He attended Princeton University before dropping out to join the Army in 1917, following the United States' entry into World War One. Fitzgerald never saw action but instead was stationed at Camp Sheridan near Montgomery, AL. It was at a local country club where he met his future wife, Zelda Sayre, 1900-1948. In the 1920s, Fitzgerald became part of the "Lost Generation" of American expatriate writers in Paris, the era from which the materials in this collection derive. His literary works include This Side of Paradise (1920), The Beautiful and the Damned (1922), The Great Gatsby (1925), Tender is the Night (1934), and an unfinished novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon (originally The Last Tycoon, published posthumously, 1941).

Scope and Content:

All of the letters in the collection were written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Also included are drafts of The Last Tycoon and a play titled The Vegetable (based on a Fitzgerald short story), as well as pen and ink drawings by "M.F." and a photograph of Zelda (Sayre) Fitzgerald.
