Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Anthony (Tony) Ardizzone was born in Chicago on August 18, 1949. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana with a B.A. in 1971, and earned his M.F.A. in Creative Writing in 1975 from Bowling Green State University. He is married to stage actress Diane Kondrat and together they have two children.
Ardizzone writes novels, short stories, and book reviews, has served as editor for several fiction anthologies, and lectured on writing. His first novel, In the Name of the Father, was published in 1978. His short stories and essays have been published in over forty literary magazines and journals, and he has won multiple awards, including the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, the Milkweed Editions National Fiction Prize, the Chicago Foundation for Literature Award for Fiction sponsored by the Friends of Literature, the Pushcart Prize, and two fiction fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. Ardizzone has worked as an English professor at Bowling Green State University, Old Dominion University, Vermont College, and Indiana University-Bloomington. At IU he spent two terms as the director of the M.F.A in Creative Writing Program, was awarded the Tracy M. Sonneborn Award, and named Chancellor's Professor of English before his departure in the spring of 2013.

The Ardizzone, Anthony V. mss. consist of the papers of Tony Ardizzone 1949-, author and English professor. Collection consists of materials that provide background information about Ardizzone and his career: articles written about Ardizzone; information about awards he has won over the course of his career; and writing conferences he has attended.
The Biographical series includes materials that provide background information about Ardizzone and his career: articles written about Ardizzone; information about awards he has won over the course of his career; and writing conferences he has attended. Writings include drafts of The Evening News, In the Name of the Father, Heart of the Order, Larabi's Ox, In the Garden of Papa Santuzzu, and Taking It Home: Stories from the Neighborhood. Also included are a few drafts of short stories. Journals contain copies of literary magazines and journals in which Ardizzone's writing was featured. Journals included are Ploughshares, The Georgia Review, The Gettysburg Review, TriQuarterly, Black Warrior Review, AGNI, Ohioana Quarterly, Beloit Fiction Journal, and Italian Americana, among others. The Book Reviews series contains reviews of Ardizzone's novels, short stories, and essays. It also contains a number of reviews written by Ardizzone for the Virginian Pilot/Ledger Star. Book Catalogs include publishers' book catalogs featuring announcements of Ardizzone's novels. Miscellaneous Book-Related is comprised of an assortment of papers related to Ardizzone's novels, such as payment advance slips and lecture flyers.
The Correspondence series is organized by year and largely contains letters from publishers, fellow authors, and friends. Correspondence spans from 1969-2012, with the bulk of the letters dating from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s. Correspondents include author Allen Wier; author Charles Johnson; author Jerre Mangione; editor Charles East; and poet Dara Wier. Audio-Visual includes five audiocassette tapes of Ardizzone reading from and discussing his various works, including an interview conducted by Studs Terkel for WMFT radio, The Studs Terkel Program, as well as a DVD of And They Came to Chicago, which also features a reading from one of his books. The Realia series contains three items related to Ardizzone's novel, Heart of the Order, two small posters advertising Ardizzone's work, and a pencil sketch of Ardizzone and his son. The collection also includes the L.C. Smith & Corona typewriter (circa 1934) Ardizzone used to write his first two books, In the Name of the Father and The Evening News.
