Background

Biographical / Historical:

Ernest Taylor Pyle (1900-1945), also known as Ernie Pyle, was a Pulitzer Prize winning American journalist. After attending Indiana University Bloomington, Pyle served as a newspaper correspondent and columnist who covered the lives of ordinary people as well as soldiers in World War II. Pyle was killed in battle at Ie Shima in the Pacific.

Scope and Content:

The Pyle mss. III, 1932-1945, consist primarily of scrapbooks, newspaper and wire copies of columns, and photographs of, or related to, journalist Ernest Taylor Pyle, 1900-1945. At some point the columns were microfilmed and then paper copies printed and bound in chronological order into 17 volumes, all compiled by Paige Cavanaugh, businessman and classmate of Ernie Pyle at Indiana University. A draft geographical index to these volumes/columns accompanies the collection.

Also present are various articles and printed materials about, or related to, Pyle that were acquired or collected by the Indiana University Journalism Library and Department from the 1950s through the mid-1990s, a portrait of Ernie Pyle made by George Biddle, June 15, 1943, that was added to the collection by the Robert T. Sorrells family of Rochester, Minnesota in December 1998 and a few Journalism Library files relating to use of the collection when located there and particularly to loans of some of Ernie Pyle's artifacts to the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC for exhibitions in the early 1990s.
