Background

Biographical / Historical:

Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong, 1912-1970, was a writer who published short stories and poems as John Gasworth and occasionally as Orpheus Scrannel. Armstrong published Kingcup: Suite Sentimentale in 1932. He served in the British Royal Airforce in North African during World War II, where he was part of a literary group known as the Cairo Poets and published some of his writing in the Salamander group's magazine. After the war, Armstrong published Blow No Bugles and Snow & Sand in 1945, then Collected Poems (1949). Armstrong died in 1970.

Scope and Content:

The Armstrong, T. mss., 1932-1945, consist of drafts and annotated printed copies of poetic works by Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong, 1912-1970, who published as John Gawsworth. The items are: 1) Blow No Bugles: Poems From Two Wars, 1942-1945 (Calcutta: Susil Gupta, 1945). "With Herbert Palmer's pencil annotations throughout--... Copy used for selecting my 'Collected Poems' in 1947. [signed] John Gawsworth" written in pencil on front free endpaper. 2) Snow & Sand: Poems From the Mediterranean, 1942-1944 (Calcutta: Susil Gupta, 1945). Signed and dated on half-title page; annotations and notes throughout. Accompanied by three autograph drafts (items 3-5), one signed and dated Oct. 43. 6) Kingcup: Suite Sentimentale (London: The Twyn Barlwm Press, 1932). Copy #72 or 75 printed. "Revision copy" in pencil on front free endpaper. Pencil notes and annotations throughout.
