Background

Biographical / Historical:

Richard Elwell Banta was born in Martinsville, Indiana, on February 16, 1904, to Pearl Elwell and William Banta. The family eventually moved to Crawfordsville, Indiana, where Banta attended Crawfordsville High School and Wabash College. From 1925 to 1935, Banta ran an advertising business, and he later worked as a bookseller, the director of public relations, and the assistant to the President at Wabash College. Banta died on December 4, 1977, in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Scope and Content:

The Banta, R.E. mss., 1938-1977, consists of the writings and research notes of Richard Elwell Banta, 1904-1977, bookman and raconteur. Included in the collection are drafts and typescripts of articles and books by Banta; speeches or talks delivered to historical society meetings, to graduate history students, and on holiday ceremonial occasions; the unpublished manuscripts of his last work, Utopia on the Wabash: A History of New Harmony; as well as research notes and copies of correspondence relating to Fort Michilimackinac, and to the Prophet and his brother Tecumseh.
