Malcolm Stanley Bradbury was born on September 7, 1932, in Sheffield, England. He studied at the University of Leicester and Queen Mary College. After teaching fellowships in the United States at Indiana University and Yale in the 1950s, Bradbury began his career as an professor in the same week his first novel, Eating People Is Wrong (1959), was published. Bradbury helped to develop the University of East Anglia's American Studies department, where he was named a professor in 1970. In 1975, he published The History Man, a novel that won the Heinemann Prize, and his Rates of Exchange (1983) was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. His other notable novels include Why Come to Slaka? (1986), Cuts (1987), and Doctor Criminale (1992). Much of his creative writing focused on academic subjects, and his critical works reflected his interests in American Studies, Modernism, and Postmodernism. In addition to his novels and critical work, Bradbury worked with the BBC to adapt novels into scripts and to write and create original programs. In 2000, he was knighted and became Sir Malcolm Bradbury. He died on November 27, 2000, in Norwich, Norfolk, England.
