Background

Biographical / Historical:

Douglas Geoffrey Bridson, 1910-1980, began his career in 1933 as a freelance radio writer and joined the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1935 as Feature Programmes Assistant in the North Region. He then moved to London in 1941 to become Overseas Features Editor, Assistant Head of Features following the War, and Programme Editor for Arts, Sciences, and Documentaries (Sound), from 1964-1967. In this latter position, Bridson was referred to as "the cultural boss of the BBC." D.G. Bridson retired from the BBC in May 1969, after more than 35 years and 800 broadcasts that carried his name.

Scope and Content:

Present in the collection are Bridson's writings including broadcast scripts, essays and memoranda from the BBC, research notes, and poetry; personal and business correspondence; audiovisual media including artwork and illustrations, photographs, slides, and casette tapes; and personal documents including news clippings, notebooks and diaries, passports, and documents related to his retirement from the BBC.

The series present in this collection are Bridson's writings, correspondence, audiovisual media, and personal documents. Within these series, folders are arranged chronologically by the date of their contents, with the exception of Bridson's personal correspondence and casette tapes which are arranged alphabetically.
