Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Brock, C.E., mss., 1932-1936 consists of drawings from late in the career of painter and illustrator Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938). Born in Holloway, London, Brock eventually settled in Cambridge and became and artist on commission at the age of 20. He illustrated books written by the likes of Jonathan Swift, William Thackeray, Charles Dickens, and George Eliot, among others. Some of his illustrations also appeared in magazines such as The Strand. He is perhaps best known for his 1894 series of golf paintings.

The collection includes some ink drawings from his illustrations of Jane Austen and George Eliot titles, as well as some of the correspondence surrounding his work and his family's artistry.
