Background

Biographical / Historical:

René Crevel, 1900-1935, was a bisexual French novelist. He is best known for being part of the surrealist movement in the 1920s. During this period Crevel wrote a selection of novels including (but not limited to): Mon Corps et moi (1925), La Mort difficile (1926), L'Esprit contre la raison (1928), and Êtes-vous fous? (1929).

During this period of his authorship, he was also diagnosed with tuberculosis (1926) and began to use morphine to self-treat. Less than ten years later, Crevel committed suicide using his gas stove just before his thirty-fifth birthday. The two reasons people suspect for his suicide are the expulsion of the surrealists from Congress and a worsening of his tuberculosis. Crevel's father had also committed suicide by hanging when Crevel was just fourteen.
