Background

Biographical / Historical:

Alexander Constantine Ionides, 1862-1931, is the author of Iōn, A Grandfather's Tale. He was born in Constantinople to Constantine Alexander Ionides, 1833–1900, and Agathonike Fenerlis, 1841-1920. His parents returned to Kensington, England in 1864. He married Calliope Zarifi, 1864-1952, on January 22, 1887. They had five children, but only their daughters survived to adulthood; two of their sons died in infancy and their fifth child, Theodore, was killed at the Battle of the Somme when he was 19. While Ionides worked as a merchant, stockbroker, and engineer, he is most famous for his book Iōn, A Grandfather's Tale (1927). The book focuses on the lives of the members of the influential Ionides family, especially his grandfather Alexander Constantine Ionides, 1810–1890, an art collector and patron of the arts. The Ionides family was at the heart of both the Anglo-Greek and artistic communities in London. Notable members of their circle include James McNeill Whistler and Dante Gabriel Rosetti.

Captain Tristan Dannreuther, 1872-1963, was an officer in the British Royal Navy. He was born in Holland Park, England, to Edward Dannreuther and Chariclea Anthea Euterpe Ionides. He trained as a Naval Cadet on the Britannia from 1885-1887. Over the course of his naval career, he served on over a dozen different ships across the British Empire. During the first World War, 1914-1918, he served on several armed cruisers and was promoted to Captain on June 30, 1918. He was retired from the Navy in 1922, and he died at St. Leonards-on-Sea on May 10, 1963.
