Abstract:
The Davis, M. mss., 1950-1985, consist of blueprints and plans for an addition to the residence of Dr. Richard Davis and his wife Madelyn, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1950, and video broadcast tapes for the television sitcom Alice, 1977-1985, written by Madelyn Davis. Also present are seven tapes related to the 1979 sitcom Dorothy or to actress Dorothy Loudon.

Background

Biographical / Historical:

Madelyn Davis, 1921-2011, also known as Madelyn Pugh, was a television writer known for her work on the I Love Lucy television series. She was a longtime friend and collaborator of television writer Bob Carroll Jr.. The two worked together on the radio show My Favorite Husband starring Lucille Ball, the precursor to the television show I Love Lucy. They also collaborated on the creation of the character Lucy Ricardo and eventually the series pilot and many subsequent episodes and spin-offs of I Love Lucy. Davis and Carroll were responsible for several other shows and were executive producers for the television sitcom Alice, which is based on the 1974 film Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

Davis was born in Indianapolis and attended Shortridge High School with classmate Kurt Vonnegut. She received a degree in journalism from Indiana University in 1942.

Scope and Content:

The Alice Tapes series contains the videotapes of most of the episodes from the sitcom Alice (1977-1985), with some missing tapes and some duplicates. The Dorothy Tapes series includes some videotapes of selected episodes of the one-season sitcom Dorothy (1979), as well as two tapes relating to actress Dorothy Loudon who starred in the show. The Alice Promo Materials series includes photos, clippings, and other materials relating to the show. The Dorothy Promo Materials series includes photos and clippings relating to the show. The Magazines series includes several copies of House Beautiful and one copy of House and Home.
