- Biographical / Historical:
Richard Nash Elliott, 1873-1945, was a congressman from Indiana. He was born on farm near Connersville, Fayette county, Indiana, April 25, 1873. He attended public schools. Elliott taught school three years. He studied law in office of Connor and McIntosh, Connersville, Indiana. He was admitted to the Indiana bar and began the practice of law at Connersville in 1896. He married Elizabeth Alice Ostheimer, 1875?-1952, on January 20, 1898. He was a member of the Indiana General assembly from 1905-1909. He was city attorney in Connersville, Indiana, from 1905-1909, and . county attorney of Fayette county, Indiana, from 1907-1915. He was delegate to Republican national convention, Chicago, in 1916. He was a United States congressman from 1917-1931 and chairman of the House committee on public buildings and grounds. He was the assistant comptroller general of the United States from 1931-1943. Elliott died March 21, 1948. He had no children.

The Elliott mss., 1926-1948, consists of papers of Richard Nash Elliott, 1873-1948, congressman from Indiana.
The papers in the collection are of the period of Mr. Elliott's service in Washington. They consist for the most part of letters from such prominent persons as Charles Robert Crisp, James Aloysius Farley, John Nance Garner, Cass Gilbert, Ulysses Simpson Grant III, John William Hamilton, Herbert Hoover, Charles Evans Hughes, Robert Patterson Lamont, Andrew William Mellon, Ogden Livingston Mills, Ruth (Bryan) Owen, Charles Manly Stedman, William Howard Taft, Willis Van Devanter, and Lindsay Carter Warren. Most of these letters either relate to government buildings, particularly the Supreme Court building, or express appreciation for kindnesses rendered or congratulations expressed. Several poems, written by Mr. Elliott and dated 1942 and 1943, are included, as are also photographs of Mr. Elliott, Louis Leon Ludlow, and Raymond Smiley Springer.
