Biographical / Historical:

The French Lick Springs Hotel mss., 1952-1953 contains materials on the history of the Hotel collected by Thomas Powderly Martin (1887-1963). Born in Garland, Texas, Martin completed his undergraduate studies at Stanford University, a masters degree at the University of California, Berkeley, and a PhD at Harvard University in 1922. After 1917, the newly married Martin went to Russia working as the YMCA's educational secretary. In 1918, he returned to the United States, first working as an adviser for the Office of Naval Intelligence and then as a history teacher at the college level. In 1927, he worked as the assistant and later the acting chief of the Library of Congress's Manuscript Division. After retiring in 1948, he worked for a brief period at Indiana University as a Consultant in Manuscripts of their libraries.

The French Lick Springs Hotel mss., 1952-1953, consists of materials on the history of the Hotel collected by Thomas Powderly Martin, 1887-1963, Consultant in Manuscripts in the Indiana University Library at the time.

Included are records of interviews, October 14-31, 1952, of Martin with employees of the Hotel and other persons; notes, October 14, 1952-April 14, 1953, of Martin relating to the Hotel; photographs and postcards of the Hotel; and printed publicity material, 1952.
