Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Galsworthy mss., 1900-1932 contains the correspondence between authors John Galsworthy (1867-1933) and Edward Garnett (1868-1937). Born in Surrey England, Galsworthy attended Harrow and new College, Oxford. At the latter, he trained as a lawyer, but turned away from the trade and joined the Galsworthy family shipping business. While he is known as a playwright and novelist, he is best known for The Forsyte Saga: an epic about familial life.

Garnett was born in London, where his father worked as a librarian at the British Museum. He only attended school at the City of London School for a few years, but was an avid reader who went on to work as an editor for several London publishers including T.Fisher Unwin, Gerald Duckworth and Company, as well as Jonathan Cape. Garnett played a role in publishing now-famous novels including D.H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers (1913), as well as works by Galsworthy and T.E. Lawrence.
