Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Gill mss., 1874-1879 contains the letters and prospectuses of English girls' schools regarding their curriculum and environment: in particular, that of Tudor Hall Ladies' College. Established in 1850, Tudor Hall was an all girls' boarding school located in Oxfordshire, between Bloxham and Banbury. It was founded by Reverend T.W. Todd and his wife Mrs. Todd in Salisbury. In 1865, the school then moved to London. It made several shifts over the early twentieth century between Kent and then, during the Second World War, Burnt Norton, before it moved to its final and current location in Banbury in 1946. Most of its students are full boarders, though some are day schoolers. And the student body is run in part by a peer and buddying system of oversight.

Scope and Content:

The Gill mss., 1874, 1878-1879, consists of letters and prospectuses from various English girls' schools describing their curriculum, teachers, and environment. Most of the letters are dated between December 1878 and January 1879 and were sent in response to inquiries by W. Gill, via his agents Griffiths & Smith. In addition, there are two letters dated August 5 and 11, 1874 from J.W. Todd of Tudor Hall Ladies' College.
